ST. PATRICK CHURCH Page 2 PORTLAND, MICHIGAN Masses for the Week of May 10, 2015 Mon. 5/11 THIS WEEK IN OUR PARISH May 10, 2015-May 17, 2015 STEWARDSHIP REFLECTIONS ALTAR APPOINTMENTS May 16th & 17h This is my commandment: love one another as I love you. No one has greater love than this, to lay down one s life for one s friends John 15:12-13 Do you love Jesus? Do you consider Him your friend? Jesus says that if we love Him we should be willing to offer whatever we have to Him, not because we want praise and glory, but simply because we love Him. That we open our hearts to Jesus, offering Him all that we have, out of love and gratitude, without expecting anything in return. Family Perspective By Bud Ozar Today s Gospel challenges us to love one another as I have loved you. Jesus is our model and he asks us to lay down our life (our time, attention, opinions and needs) for each other. This is the sacrament of the family: when God is made visible in our sacrificial love for one another. Bulletin deadline is 10:00 AM Monday for inclusion in Sunday s bulletin. Sixth Sunday of Easter Page 3 May 10, 2015 When Plans Go Wrong Acts 10:25-26, 34-35, 44-48 Financial Activities Some things don t work out the way you plan them. Even when you pray over a matter, and you decide on an action that you truly believe fits the will of God, things can turn out different from what you had in mind. Sometimes God takes matters out of your hands. Take Peter, for example. After the resurrection of Jesus, the Holy Spirit came upon him and other disciples. Peter preached repentance to converts from Judaism. They were baptized and then received the gifts of the Spirit. It formed a neat program: Find some Jews. Preach to them. Baptize them. Watch for the gifts of the Spirit. What could possibly go wrong? Cornelius. Peter wasn t counting on Cornelius. One day, while Peter was at prayer, he realized that God was calling not just Jews, but Gentiles to belief in Christ. The Gentile Cornelius, who had also been praying, sent friends to find Peter. When Peter came, his neat program fell apart. The Holy Spirit came upon the household of Cornelius before they were baptized, and before these Gentiles could even become Jews! God had another plan. Sometimes when things don t go our way there is a very simple reason. They are going the way God planned them. Eucharistic Adoration During a Holy Hour our Lord gives us the courage to cope with our natural fears, the ability to undertake great things for the sake of His name, and the power to undergo great trials. Fr. Hardon If you or someone you know is interested in going to Eucharistic Adoration on Mondays or Wednesdays but doesn t drive, let us know and rides can be arranged. Call Mike Cook at 517-242-1352. Today-SUNDAY Mother s Day Breakfast Knights of Columbus invite you to the annual Mother s Day Breakfast on May 10th at the K of C Hall on Maynard Rd. Sixth Sunday of Easter Page 5 May 10, 2015 St. Patrick Students Compete in Foreign Language Day While we feel blessed that we are able to offer foreign languages to all of our students from DK through high school, it is very gratifying to know when they have the opportunity to apply what they are learning they do extremely well. Foreign language students are offered many opportunities for hands on experience using the second language they are learning. The largest opportunity is our annual foreign language trip. In even years, the Spanish club students travel to Spain and in odd years, German Club students travel to Germany. Another major opportunity for our students to apply what they have learned is when they compete against other schools in contests that test their foreign language skills. Each year in May, Central Michigan University hosts Foreign Language Day. More than a 1,200 students from approximately 40 schools around the state of Michigan converge on the CMU campus in Mt. Pleasant, where they are given the opportunity to participate, compete, and show off their foreign language skills in song, dance, skits, displays, posters, poetry and interpretive reading. This year, St. Patrick School sent students from grades 8, 9, and 11 to compete in the 43 rd annual Foreign Language Day. Both the Spanish and German classes did an outstanding job and were very successful. The following students were acknowledged for their performances at Foreign Language Day: German Dance: The German II Class 2 nd place German Display: Will Trierweiler, Nathan Lehnert, Joe Timmer, and Zakary Arwood 3 rd place German Interpretive Reading: Colin Pline 1 st place German Interpretive Reading: Doug Cope 2 nd place German Song: Joe and Grace Timmer 1 st place In addition to the competitions, attending Foreign Language Day at Central Michigan University also gives our students exposure to the college campus and an opportunity to observe college classes and to eat lunch in one of the CMU cafeterias. Foreign Language Day also promotes the sharing of world languages and cultures and increases our students global awareness. Congratulations to the students and their teachers, who made our school community extremely proud of their hard work and accomplishments at the 2015 Foreign Language Day Randy Hodge-School Administrator

ST. PATRICK CHURCH Page 6 PORTLAND, MICHIGAN Thank you The annual St. Patrick Parish Garage Sale took in $1,802.68. Thank you to everyone who donated items for the sale and to all the volunteer workers who helped set up and run the sale. A special thank you to the Knights of Columbus for the use of the KC Hall at no charge and for their help with set up and take down. Items not sold were donated to Fr. John Vallier, pastor of Holy Spirit Parish in Grand Rapids and the St. Vincent DePaul Society in Lansing. Please start now to save your items for the next KC sale in the fall and the next parish sale next spring. The more you donate, the more money we can raise. Thank you. In Memoriam St. Patrick Healing Prayer Ministry Please join fellow parishioners to pray in the presence of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament for the spiritual, physical, and emotional healing of all who are in need of such. We encourage anyone in need of any kind of healing to come and be in the healing presence of the Blessed Sacrament, while we pray. If unable to attend, however, we welcome anyone to call with any specific or general healing needs so that we may pray in their behalf. We very much encourage those with healing needs to seek the Sacrament of The Anointing of the Sick as well as prayer before the Eucharist. We also encourage anyone who receives healing of any kind to let it be known in some way so that we can offer praise and thanksgiving to Jesus, the Divine healer, and to help build the faith of our parish family. If you have a devotion to the healing of others, please join us. We meet at 7:00 p.m. in the chapel on the 2nd Thursday of each month. Contact Mike Cook 517-647-2518 or Carol Kahn 517-647- 7959. Pastoral Council-Nomination forms It is time to choose new Pastoral Council members. Do you know someone in our parish that you would consider nominating? Would you consider serving if nominated? Please don t conclude that you are not qualified. If you love the Church and embrace the teachings of the Church, you are well qualified to serve God s people in our own parish. After prayerful consideration, please accept the names of the following individuals as nominees for the Pastoral Council: Name Address 1. 2. 3. Please return nomination forms to the Parish Office
