Lesson Overview TO THE TEACHER Bible Story Samson s Bad Choice Judges 13-16 Samson had the gift of super strength and was chosen by God to help the people of Israel. However, He did not guard his heart. He disobeyed God by spending time with others who did not love God (the Philistines). Because he spent time with the Philistines, his heart towards God changed and he began to make poor choices. Samson grew up in the ways of the Lord, but he let his friends and others influence him, and he made bad choices that he paid for the rest of his life. Even though he had big muscles and was strong. He did not guard his heart and he was really weak. It is important that we learn how to guard our heart from bad stuff. Romans 12:2 tell us not to be conformed to this world. Things like TV shows, video games, magazines, and movies are not bad in themselves; however, there are some TV shows and movies that are full of bad stuff. If we want to grow up, not only do we need to put good stuff in our heart, we need to stop putting bad things in. We put good or bad things in our heart by what we hear, watch and listen to. You need to think about what you are hearing, watching and listening to. What TV shows or movies are you watching? When you watch something on TV or video, you are seeing images (real or fake). What are those images showing? What kind of music are you listening to? Think about the words. Are the words good for your heart? Your heart is hungry for God s Word. Put in God s Word and take out the bad stuff. It is our job to guard our heart. You are not too young to learn how to guard your heart. Until you know how to do that on your own, it is important to trust your mom, dad and teachers who will help you and teach you how to guard your heart. Have you ever asked your mom, Can I watch this movie? and you already knew it was a bad movie? You are just hoping Mom might say Yes, but you already know inside that it is wrong and she says, No. What do you do? You should trust your mom to help you guard your heart. Week 1 START HERE Page 3

1. PLAY TIME 2. COLOR PAGE Bible Story Samson s Bad Choice Judges 13-16 Samson had the gift of super strength and was chosen by God to help the people of Israel. What You Say: In our coloring picture today, we see the strong Samson. God had given him the ability of super strength. He could beat up tigers, and lions and bad people. God gavae him the ability to be strong to lead God s people. But Samson was really weak because he did not guard his heart. He hung around the wrong people and started to do things he shouldn t. So even though he had big muscles and was really strong, he was actually really weak on the inside. The lesson we learn from Samson is that we have to guard our heart. 3. WHAT S IN THE BAG? HOW TO PLAY How It Is Done: Select one child to put their hand in the bag and have them guess what they think is in the bag! Pull out the item they have grabbed and show everyone. This is a clue to this week s Bible story. What You Need: Rope What You Say: It s time to dig into the big bag and see what we find this week! Are you ready? I have hidden a our clues for our Bible story this morning in the big bag! Pull out the ROPE What does a rope tell us about our Bible Story today? We are going to learn about Samson and how he didn t do a good job of guarding his heart! Samson had the gift of super strength and was chosen by God to help the people of Israel; however, Samson started hanging around the wrong people, and eventually he had more problems than he could deal with by himself. The Philistines were upset that they could not figure out the secret to his strength, so they were mean to his wife and told her to make him tell her the answer. Samson told the answer to his wife, and then she told the answer to all the Philistines. This made Samson very angry. Samson hung around the wrong people and he continually let his anger get the best of him and it ended up with him being tied up (hold up the rope). Tying Samson up with a rope would not hold him but eventually because of his bad choices the secret to his strenght was found out. 4. INTRODUCTION How To Lead Worship: Whether you worship with CDs or worship videos, leading kids in worship is all about setting the example. If the song has a fast beat and you can clap, lead the kids in clapping! If the song is slow and worshipful, lead the kids in lifting their hands as they sing. Recommended Song: This Little Light of Mine Album: Little Praise Party, My Best Friend go to : www.yancynotnancy.com to download music What You Say: Worship Leader: Hey, everyone! I don t know about you, but I am EXCITED to start our new series LISTEN. Today, we are going to discover how important it is for us to guard our hearts! MOTIONS: Guard (act like holding sheild) Your (point to kids) heart (point to heart) Worship Leader and Children: Let s try the bottom line with some actions together. MOTIONS: Guard (act like holding sheild) Your (point to kids) heart (point to heart) Worship Leader: You got it! It s going to be a lot of fun today, and we are going to become SUPER DUPER guards of our hearts. Let s stand up and worship God this morning. Week 1 Let s Listen Page 6

5. WORSHIP (Lead children in singing your worship songs for the morning) Worship Leader: I m going to have to tell Pastor how amazing you guys are at worshipping God. He/She is going to be AMAZED. I heard from a little bird we have a pretty cool memory verse this week. Do you want to learn it with me? Worship Leader: Awesome! I have some motions that will help us remember it when we go home. GOD S WORD SAYS: Proverbs 4:23 MOTIONS: Guard (act like you are holding up a shield) Your (point at kids) Heart (point to heart) Worship Leader: Are you ready to give it a try? Let s go! Worship Leader and Children: GOD S WORD SAYS: Proverbs 4:23 MOTIONS: Guard (act like you are holding up a shield) Your (point at kids) Heart (point to heart) Worship Leader: Whoa! Someone get the big kids in here. You guys are doing AWESOME. It s time for the Adventures of James &Andi. So let s sit down and see what our friends are up to in today s motion comic! (Worship Leader exits) Week 1 Let s Listen Page 7

6. THE ADVENTURES OF JAMES AND ANDI BIBLE STORY MOTION COMIC Show Motion Comic - Samson s Bad Choice...After the Motion Comic Samson had the gift of super strength and was chosen by God to help the people of Israel. Next; play the Memory Verse and Bottom Line: Say these with your kids and get them to do the actions. MOTIONS: Guard (act like holding sheild) Your (point to kids) heart (point to heart) GOD S WORD SAYS: Proverbs 4:23 MOTIONS: Guard (act like you are holding up a shield) Your (point at kids) Heart (point to heart) Week 1 Let s Listen Page 8

7. HEAR NO EVIL, SAY NO EVIL, SEE NO EVIL Props Needed: Earmuffs or headphones Two bandanas (one as a blindfold, one to be put over the mouth) What You Do: Select one kid ahead of time who is older to be the example for Say No Evil, as it will require putting a cloth over his/her mouth INTER-ACTIVE OBJECT LESSON What You Say: We re learning about how it is important for us to guard our hearts! MOTIONS: Guard (act like you are holding up a shield) Your (point to the kids) Heart (point to your heart) Samson was not good at guarding his heart even though he was super strong on the outside. He allowed people around him to control how he felt and let his temper get the best of him on more than one occasion. You might say Samson was a big baby sometimes and threw temper tantrums! I need three people to come up here and help me with our interactive object lesson. (Select three kids to take part in the object lesson) There are three things that you and I need to do so that we don t end up like Samson. The first thing is we need to guard our hearts and make sure we do not hear bad things. (Place earmuffs or headphones on the first kid.) When we are listening to the radio, hanging out with our friends and even watching TV, we need to make sure we are not hearing bad things. The second thing is we need to guard our hearts and make sure we do not say bad things. (Place bandana over the second kid s mouth.) If we say mean things to people and tell others jokes that we are not supposed to, we are not doing a good job of guarding our hearts. The third thing is we need to guard our hearts and make sure we do not see bad things. (Place bandana as blindfold over the third kid s eyes.) continued... Week 1 Let s Listen Page 9

7. HEAR NO EVIL, SAY NO EVIL, SEE NO EVIL cont. While we are watching TV, playing on our parents phones or the family ipad/tablet, we need to guard our hearts against things we shouldn t see, like lots of violence and people being mean to each other. This is so important to God that He put it in His Word, and it is our memory verse today. GOD S WORD SAYS: Proverbs 4:23 MOTIONS: Guard (act like you are holding up a shield) Your (point at kids) Heart (point to heart) When we are going about our day, we have a choice whether to guard our heart or let the bad things in. Let s make the right choice and guard our hearts! Week 1 Let s Listen Page 10

8. EN GUARD! RICKY BOBBY or SALLY SUZIE Character Ricky Bobby or Sally Suzie: A happy-go-lucky kid. Learning how to live for Jesus Athletic/tomboyish LARGE GROUP CLOSING SKETCH Today, we ve been talking about MOTIONS: Guard (act like you are holding up a shield) Your (point to the kids) Heart (point to your heart) (Ricky Bobby or Suzie Sally enters the room from the back trumpeting their arrival with their mouth, Doo do doooo! ) En Garde! Costume: Worn out jeans Favorite sports team t- shirt. Boy wears a baseball cap Girl s hair in pigtails What You Need: Roman-style armor from your local dollar store Hey Ricky Bobby! (rushes up next to the teacher and stares down all the class) Are you on guard? Am I on guard? Yes! On guard! How about you explain this to me with a little more detail! You re talking about guarding your heart and I m the only one in here who is properly dressed (points to armor). Ohhhh, so you are guarding your heart! Umm... YEAH! Interesting. This armor and this sword will protect my heart from EVERY- THING. So, what if I say some mean things to you? Can your shield block that? Week 1 Let s Listen Page 11

8. EN GUARD! continued No... Can your armor block what you watch on TV? No... I think you ve got the wrong equipment, Ricky Bobby! (scratches head) I think you re right! (takes off armor) When God s Word talks about MOTIONS: Guard (act like you are holding up a shield) Your (point to the kids) Heart (point to your heart) It is not talking about literally putting on armor and guarding your physical heart. It is talking about guarding your spiritual heart, your spirit man, from the bad things you may hear, say and see. Oh, so I need to make sure I guard my spiritual heart, my spirit man, from what kind of TV I watch, things I say, and what I hear on the radio, as well as from my friends? That s right! Wow... (looks at armor) What am I going to do with this armor? You can go guard the door until the parents come to pick up the other kids! (grabs armor and salutes) You ve got it! En garde! En Garde! See you guys later. I ll be guarding the door! (Ricky Bobby or Suzie Sally runs out of the room and stands at the door guarding for a minute or two) THE END Week 1 Let s Listen Page 12

9. WHAT ARE YOU WATCHING? Props Needed: A TV remote What To Do: Hold remote in your hand OBJECT LESSON What You Say: Boys and girls, I have in my hand a TV remote. With this device, I can change the channel on my TV without getting out of my chair. If I want to watch the football game, I can turn it to the sports channel. If I want to watch a cartoon, I can turn it to my favorite cartoon. But not everything on TV is good for us. There are some shows that are not good for us to watch. And that is where we really need to listen to our parents. Our mom and dad know what s best for us, and they may only allow us to watch 3-4 channels or shows, but they are thinking about what is the best thing for us. It is important that we choose carefully what we watch on TV, what DVDs we watch, and what kind of music we listen to. What we watch and listen to will affect us. When we guard what we watch and what we listen to, we are guarding our heart. When we listen and watch good things, then we will think good thoughts and do good things. So the next time that you have your TV remote, choose the right channel. MOTIONS: Guard (act like holding sheild) Your (point to kids) heart (point to heart) GOD S WORD SAYS: Proverbs 4:23 MOTIONS: Guard (act like you are holding up a shield) Your (point at kids) Heart (point to heart) (If you have time, hand the TV remote around and let children get a chance to hold it.) Week 1 Let s Live It Page 13

10. GUARD WHAT S VALUABLE What You Need: 1 toy 1 lunch box with latch or paper box What You Do: Place the toy and the lunch box on the table OBJECT LESSON What You Say: (Hold toy in your hand) I know each one of you have a favorite toy, a toy that you love more than all the rest of your toys. What is your favorite toy? I only call on children with their hands up. (Allow for responses) Even though you have your favorite toy, you can t always have it with you. Sometimes you have to put it down. And if you put it down and go into another room, there is a possibility of what happening? Right, your brother or sister may find your favorite toy and play with it. So, in order to keep your favorite toy safe, you could do this. (Open lunch box or bag and put toy inside) If I wanted to keep my favorite toy safe, I could put it in a safe spot like my lunch box. That way I know hat it will be safe and no one will find it. That reminds me of our lesson today. Just like I want to guard my favorite toy and keep it safe, we should also guard our heart and keep it safe. Remember, we guard our heart by watching what we watch, what we hear and what we say. So, just like you would keep your favorite toy safe and guard it, keep your heart safe and guard it too. MOTIONS: Guard (act like you are holding up a shield) Your (point to the kids) Heart (point to your heart) GOD S WORD SAYS - Proverbs 4:23 MOTIONS: Guard (act like you are holding up a shield) Your (point to the kids) Heart (point to your heart) Week 1 Let s Live It Page 14

11. MOMMA KNOWS BEST What You Need: 1 green banana What You Do: Pick one child to help you. You may want totalk to them ahead of time. OBJECT LESSON What You Say: (Hold the green banana up.) Have you ever been super hungry. You were weak from no food and could not endure another moment. (Act like you cannot carry on a moment longer, crawling across the front of the class room - dramatically.) You saw this (hold up green banana) on the counter and you know that you are saved. You will be able to eat. Just as you are about to peel the banana, you hear this, No, Johnny. Don t eat that. You think, What?!?! What is your Mom thinking? Doesn t she know that you are hungry. You need to eat. You need to have food! Well, Momma knows best. There is a reason that your mom doesn t want you to eat this green banana. Does anyone know why? (Allow for response.) Can I have a volunteer? (Call up child.) Begin to peel the green banana. Johnny would you like to try this banana? (Give a piece of the green banana to Johnny your volunteer child.) Okay, how does that taste? (Allow for Johnny to respond.) Not so good, does it? So, Mom had a reason she didn t want you to eat the green banana. Because it wasn t ripe and wouldn t taste good. It is important to listen to your Mom. Your Mom does know best. She has your best interest at heart. She wants the best for you. There will be a day that you need to be able to make your own decisions, but until then, listen to your Mom. MOTIONS: Guard (act like you are holding up a shield) Your (point to the kids) Heart (point to your heart) GOD S WORD SAYS - Proverbs 4:23 MOTIONS: Guard (act like you are holding up a shield) Your (point to the kids) Heart (point to your heart) Week 1 Let s Live It Page 15

12. GOOD CHOICES What You Need: Apple Candy bar What You Do: Place apple and candy bar on table in front of class. OBJECT LESSON What To Say: Food can be either good or bad for you. (Show the kids the apple and the candy bar. Ask them which one is healthy food or junk food.) My mom never let me eat candy bars and ice cream all day if I wanted to. How about yours? Well, if you ate candy bars all day, you d feel sick to your stomach because they are filled with sugar; and if you eat too much, it makes your tummy sore. But if you eat healthy food like apples, you will feel good and it will make your body stronger. Apples are fruit and fruit is good for us. Whatever you eat will either make your body strong or weak. The main way we guard our heart is by making good choices about what we watch and what we listen to. Whatever we watch or listen to is like food for our spirit man. We want to feed our spirit (heart) good things because, when we do, good things will come out. Note To As I write this, I am personally dealing with these exact words (poopy head) with my four-year-old grandson. It is important to show them where this type of language starts, and that they can identify and choose not to follow this path. Debbie Harper Just like an apple can make our body strong, good things we watch and listen to will make our heart strong. What goes in will come out! For instance, if you watch a TV show and it has bad words on it, if you keep watching it, you will want to say those bad words. You want to make sure what you put in is good, because then what comes out is good. If you want to guard your heart, what kind of things do you need to guard your heart from? (Allow for response - bad TV shows, a neighbor kid that talks back to his mom, etc.) What do you do if you find yourself talking back to your mom or saying things like poopy head? Think about where you heard those words, and who was acting that way and stay away from it. MOTIONS: Guard (act like you are holding up a shield) Your (point to the kids) Heart (point to your heart) GOD S WORD SAYS - Proverbs 4:23 MOTIONS: Guard (act like you are holding up a shield) Your (point to the kids) Heart (point to your heart) Week 1 Let s Live It Page 16

13. GUARD YOUR HEART What You Need: Craft sheets (included with this lesson) Cardstock Glue sticks Crayons Glitter - if you are daring What You Do: Color copy Craft Page A onto paper Copy Craft Page B onto cardstock - enough for each child Craft Instructions: Each child will receive Craft Page B and 1 heart from Craft Page A. Instruct the children to glue the heart onto Craft Page B. Each child can color anddecorate their page. CRAFT What You Say: Today, we have been talking about guarding our hearts. We are talking about our spirit man, the inside of us. It is important that we guard our heart and protect it, because what we put in comes out. We want to put good things in so good things come out. We want to treat people kindly, and we want to show love to others. We do not want to be mean to others and say bad things. So we watch what we see and what we do and what we say. Craft Instructions - What You Say: I want you to glue your heart inside of the dotted lines. And then we can close the card and keep our heart safe. You can use colors to color the outside too. WHAT WE LEARNED TODAY Bible Story Samson s Bad Choice Judges 13-16 Samson had the gift of super strength and was chosen by God to help the people of Israel. PARENTING PRESCHOOLERS GUARDING YOUR HEART It is important that we learn how to guard our heart from bad stuff. WHAT WE CAN DO AT HOME How We Do It (any time this week) What You Do: Pour a bowl of cereal as a snack. Have a spoon of dirt handy. What s The Point: Let s have a snack of cereal. But wait, let s add this (pour the dirt onto the cereal). Okay now, let s snack. What! You don t want it? Why not? Oh, the dirt. So just a little bit of dirt wrecked the whole bowl, didn t it? That reminds me. We need to guard our heart. Just a little bit of dirt made the whole bowl of cereal yucky. It s important to keep on guard about what we watch and what we see and what we say. When we guard our heart we are protecting ourself. Week 1 AT HOME
