Last month s drink winners were Jerry Ball & Yvette Garcia This month s letter has four GAID # s hidden. Look for yours! My Name is Old Glory I am the flag of the United States of America. My name is Old Glory. I fly atop the world's tallest buildings. I stand watch in America's halls of justice. I fly majestically over great institutes of learning. I stand guard with the greatest military power in the world. Look up! And see me! I stand for peace - honor - truth and justice. I stand for freedom I am confident - I am arrogant I am proud. When I am flown with my fellow banners My head is a little higher My colors a little truer. I bow to no one. I am recognized all over the world. I am worshipped - I am saluted - I am respected I am revered - I am loved, and I am feared. I have fought every battle of every war for more than 200 years: Gettysburg, Shilo, Appomatox, San Juan Hill, the trenches of France, the Argonne Forest, Anzio, Rome, the beaches of Normandy, the deserts of Africa, the cane fields of the Philippines, the rice paddies and jungles of Guam, Okinawa, Japan, Korea, Vietnam, Guadalcanal New Britain, Peleliu, and many more islands. And a score of places long forgotten by all but those who were with me. I was there. I led my soldiers - I followed them. I watched over them. They loved me. I was on a small hill in Iwo Jima. I was dirty, battle-worn and tired, but my soldiers cheered me, and I was proud. I have been soiled, burned, torn and trampled on the streets of countries I have helped set free. It does not hurt, for I am invincible. I have been soiled, burned, torn and trampled on the streets of my country, and when it is by those with whom I have served in battle it hurts. But I shall overcome - for I am strong. I have slipped the bonds of Earth and stand watch over the uncharted new frontiers of space from my vantage point on the moon. I have been a silent witness to all of America's finest hours. But my finest hour comes when I am torn into strips to be used for bandages for my wounded comrades on the field of battle, When I fly at half mast to honor my soldiers, and when I lie in the trembling arms of a grieving mother at the graveside of her fallen son. I am proud. My name is Old Glory. Dear God - Long may I wave. -by Howard Schnauber (Poem re-published courtesy of the Fort Collins Public Library Local History Archive Oral History Interview of Mr. Howard Schnauber, the author.
Worthy President s Letter Hello my Brothers and Sisters, Joe Atencio There has been a Face Book post going around of a disrespectful punk stomping on the US flag. It sickened me. Therefore I am dedicating this newsletter to Old Glory. And more importantly the men and women who have fought protecting the rights of this punk that allows him to do such immature things. I am reaching out to ALL of our members for a little bit of help. It has been brought to my attention numerous times and I have witnessed it firsthand. Can we all please try to keep the door onto our fabulous new patio closed? First of all, we have a pretty nice air conditioning unit running most days keeping the social room at a very comfortable temperature. We cannot afford to try to heat the outdoors through this open door. Secondly, a main reason the patio was built was so our members who smoke can have a place to go and not bother the non-smoking members. With the door open the breeze tends to blow the smoke right into the building. This defeats the purpose. Your help and understanding to keep the door closed will be greatly appreciated by all. Has anybody else besides me noticed how good the yard is looking? I want to send a special shout out to Doyle, Jessie, Steve and whoever else has been working out there, it is looking good. Thank you guys (GAID # 3899409 is a winner) I want to personally thank everybody who helped make the summer picnic a huge success. We had a great turn out and I think everybody enjoyed themselves. Everybody who helped or brought in a dish pat yourselves on the back, special thanks to Mike who put the BBQ grill together at the last minute and to Kathy for keeping me pointed in the right direction. How about the band? WOW! Johnny Rodriguez and the Diamantes are the real deal. It is such an awesome feeling to listen to a band on the radio in the morning and then hear them live in our home in the afternoon. I would love to have them come back. What do you guys think? And, more importantly, some of the band members, Michael, TJ, and Ramon are filling out FOE applications this week. Go see these guys at Bubba Chinos restaurant on 88 th and Pecos. Thank you all and God Bless Joe Atencio Worthy President Thornton Eagles Aerie #3226
Madam President s Letter Mary Dewey Dear Sisters and Brothers, WOW! I am amazed at the great turnout we had for the annual barbecue. Thanks to everyone who helped put it together, brought side dishes, and cleaned up (Deb, Timmie & Vickie). There is a lot of effort that goes into putting on these events, and volunteers are always appreciated. Please see any officer if you d like help out at a future event. Special thanks to Betty and Claudia for the 50/50, Kathy M. for helping set up, President Joe for all the work he put in AND grilling along with Eldon (so glad those flames didn t get much higher and the squirt bottle was handy. The side dishes and desserts were tasty. The band was really good, and it s always fun to watch our members on the dance floor enjoying themselves and the music. Joe, I really appreciate you speaking to the crowd and letting me just stand by your side smiling. I m not sure if I have a microphone phobia or don t even want to try to speak to the members after your eloquent speeches. (GAID # 4579812 is a winner) There is a fundraiser for Alzheimer's Disease in September. The ladies auxiliary Chaplain, Lillian Martinez, will be hosting the event on Friday the 6th. I hope everyone has a safe and fun holiday weekend. It s sad that summertime is nearing its end, but cool fall weather is perfect for football. It is very much appreciated. Kevin and Gina
Trustees Voice Dear brothers and sisters, We would like to let you know how our 2 nd Annual back pack distribution went this year. We gave out almost 600 back packs with school supplies in them in about 35 minutes. And all this was done by a couple of adults and a lot of teenager volunteers. They did great. These back packs were given to us by an awesome and generous organization called, A Precious Child. Thank you to APC. Please get on our Thornton Eagle website to see some pictures of the event. (http://www.thorntoneagles.com/) Some of our future events that we will be doing include a Thanksgiving dinner distribution, our Christmas gift give away and a Christmas tree give away. So please watch for details on these events. Doing what we do best, People Helping People. Trustees Bartender s Banter Football season is finally here! Starting regular season we want to do our pot luck again! Anyone that can bring something to share would be great. We will put a contribution jar up again. We d appreciate a donation to the jar if you don t bring something. Those funds go to a Super Bowl Party and hopefully we have enough for pre-prepared food and we won t have to cook.yeah! Don t forget we have shots for Bronco s touchdowns! Come have fun and see your friends. Thank you, Thornton Aerie Bartenders Chaplain s Corner I am reminded that as football season approaches many of us may choose to socialize and watch football, both college and professional, at our club. I do not know how many of you notice the signs in the stands, however one sign that has caught my attention in the past, was the sign which reads 3:16. I usually noticed this sign in the end zones during the extra point attempts. The first few people I asked about the meaning of this sign did not know and I did not recognize it as being familiar to me. I have come to understand it is a reference to the Bible passage from "John." The following Bible passages are from "John" verses 11-21 to give an overall context for "John 3:16. 11 I tell you the truth, we speak of what we know, and we testify to what we have seen, but still you people do not accept our testimony. 12 I have spoken to you of earthly things and you do not believe; how then will you believe if I speak of heavenly things? 13 No one has ever gone into heaven except the one who came from heaven--the Son of Man. 14 Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the desert, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, 15 that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life. 16 "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son. 19 This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. 20 Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. 21 But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God." Yours Fraternally, Richard Wise Chaplin - Thornton Eagles 3226
