THIRITIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME, OCTOBER 27, 2013 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK Last Sunday s Day of Service drew more than 160 of our parishioners and members of the Spectrum community for the developmentally disabled. They did many needed and helpful things for Saint Joseph Parish and for good local causes. Thanks to the dedicated committee led by Irene Galvan and Phil De Rosa, which handled the extensive planning, and to all who took part in the service activities, which brought with them their own rewards. This Friday and Saturday we will keep two important feasts: All Saints Day rejoices in those who have reached Heaven. I love what the Benedictine monk Jeremy Driscoll has written about them: What or who but the Catholic Church remembers so many men and women long since dead, remembers them and calls them by name, counts them friends, and recalls their deeds? Catholics...remember and talk about Francis and Clare, Augustine, Gregory, Catherine, Gertrude, Cornelius, Clement, Philip, Elizabeth, Luwanga, Miki, and thousands and thousands more. This is just some measure of the respect and gratitude for one another that we learn from the Church, respect and gratitude destined to last an eternity. And the great theologian Karl Rahner reminds us that this solemnity is so important to us who struggle to live Christ s ways today: If this is the mystery of this day, to make present and accessible to us, to those who are still imperfect, still toiling, still forever stumbling, those who are in despair and who cry out for help, to make available for these the consummation of grace and of its victory over the weakness and lowliness of man, then the festival of All Saints is not only the festival of the blessed in heaven, but our festival day too, on which we make a fresh start and set out anew on our course with rejoicing. All Saints is the festival of our blessed hope that what they already possess may be imparted to us too. All Souls Day is our feast to pray for the dead who are completing their readiness for Heaven. It is not a Holy Day of Obligation, but nonetheless it is a day on which we should strongly consider worshiping, since it reminds us of the sure eventual happiness of our loved ones. As Cardinal Newman once wrote: We seem to live and die as the leaves, but there is One who notes the fragrance of every one of them, and when their hour comes, places them between the pages of His great Book. Msgr. David Hubba 3 SUPPORT GROUP FOR THOSE GRIEVING If you have lost a loved one to death, you are invited to a series of six sessions of information, mutual sharing and support in a spiritual, caring, strictly confidential setting at St. Mary s Church, 280 Washington Avenue, Dumont. A DAY OF SERVICE THANK YOU On Saturday, October 19, we had our parish s annual Day of Service. Approximately 170 members of the parish gathered on the steps of the church for a prayer service adults, children, families and single individuals and then put their faith into action by serving others. Some people planted mums and cleaned up Mary s Garden; others helped pack clothes for needy children. Some went to visit elderly people and others entertained the residents of the Oradell Health Care Center. Some parishioners cleaned up the Oradell Train Station which was highly overgrown, while others raked leaves from people s yards. Volunteers gathered baby items and sent them to Englewood and others made baskets for newborns which were donated to the Lighthouse Pregnancy Center in Hawthorne. Members of the Shawl Ministry created beautiful handmade baby blankets to add to the baskets. Everyone enjoyed a great lunch prepared and served by volunteers. Our warmest thanks to all the volunteers from Spectrum who helped to make the day such a big success. Some of the people who participated during the day attended 5 pm Saturday evening Mass. The Day of Service was visible proof that what we do at the altar of the Lord leads us to love our neighbor. It was also a sign that when we come to Mass we not only offer our prayer and worship to God but also the good works we all do everyday and especially during our Day of Service. Irene Galvan and Phil De Rosa Day of Service Chairpersons FAMILY SHELTER MINISTRY NOVEMBER 3 to 10 Saint Peter the Apostle Church in River Edge, together with their support congregations, Temple Avodat Shalom and First Congregational Church, both of River Edge, and our own Saint Joseph Parish, will be hosting families in the Family Promise of Bergen County program during the week of November 3 to 10. VISIT US ON OUR WEBSITES: Parish: sjcnj.org School: sjsusa.org Religious Ed.: religioused.blogspot.com LEARN WHAT YOU CAN DO TO REDUCE HUNGER NOVEMBER 7 Over 1 million people in New Jersey don t know where their next meal is coming from. THIRTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME, OCTOBER 27, 2013 THE CATHOLIC CHURCH UNDERTAKES COMPREHENSIVE PROGRAM TO BATTLE ABUSE While most media focus over the past ten years has been on the incidents of sexual abuse within the Church, little has been said about the many positive steps that the Catholic Church has taken to address the issue. Dioceses across the country, and especially the Archdiocese of Newark, have instituted compassionate outreach to victims and support services, training and background checks for staff and volunteers, training for children and youth, codes of conduct, reporting requirements to civil authorities, independent Review Boards to investigate allegations and recommend actions under Canon law for offenders, as well as other initiatives. To date, the Catholic Church is the only youth-serving organization in the country private or public to undertake such a comprehensive program to create and promulgate safe environments for children and young people. Independent auditors from the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops have found the Archdiocese of Newark to be fully compliant with the requirements of the Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People in every year since audits began in 2003. ARCHDIOCESAN CLOSING OF THE YEAR OF FAITH Cathedral Basilica, Newark NJ November 24, Mass at 3 pm The closing of the Year of Faith commemorating the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Second Vatican Council and the 20th anniversary of the Catechism of the Catholic Church will be observed at a Mass offered by Archbishop Myers in the Cathedral Basilica, Newark, on Sunday, November 24 at 3 pm. This is an opportunity for the Archdiocese to gather in thanksgiving and celebrate the many blessings that have come to the Universal Church and to the Archdiocese of Newark in particular during these past fifty years. Because of the historical significance of the occasion, the Archbishop will present a commemorative medallion to each parish as a means of recognizing and fostering a sense of commitment and dedication to the conciliar renewal which began a half century ago. Everyone is cordially invited to participate in this extraordinary celebration! You can check out the Archdiocese of Newark s Twitter Page at https://twitter.com/nwkarchdiocese 5 PROTECTING GOD S CHILDREN OCTOBER 28 There will be a Protecting God s Children Workshop on Monday, October 28 at 7:00 pm in Saint Joseph Lower School Gym. SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ The Gospel is the Good News about Jesus. The Gospel Reading for today is from Saint Luke 18 :9-14. In today s Gospel, Jesus tells us a story about two people. One was an important leader and the other was a tax collector. Both went to the temple to pray. The tax collector prayed because he knew he was a sinner and he asked for God s forgiveness. The leader s prayer showed that he thought he was better than everyone else. Compiled by the Liturgy of the Word With Children Committee How many times do you think that you are better than another person? Even grownups have this problem. But Jesus tells us that no one is better than anyone else. We all sin. We all make mistakes. Instead of looking down on other people, remember your own mistakes and ask God for forgiveness. In God s eyes, we all are his children. No one is better than another. God is happy when we try to do the right things and be the best we can be. God smiled on the tax collector who realized that he was not better than anyone else. MISSION OF THE WEEK I will pray to God for forgiveness by saying: Lord, let me see my own mistakes, not the mistakes of others. Help me not to put other kids down and to say I am sorry when I am wrong. Amen. 6
