We recognize our responsibility to give worship to God, reverence to all people, respect to all creation and to share the Good News of Jesus Christ. Acknowledging our own brokenness and our need to hope, we seek to be a forgiving and welcoming community committed to service by the sharing of life and love with all, and working together to make peace and justice a reality in our world. Strengthened by the presence of God in our lives, we undertake all of this through Our Lord Jesus Christ, Amen. Alleluia!

Holy Spirit Catholic Church May 6, 2018 From The Pastor s Desk Love one another. There are those words once again. We have heard them so many times and will hear them so many times again before we leave this world. And today, we hear these words both from the first letter of John and from the Gospel of John. It was said that John often repeated these words to the people. In fact, according to his immediate disciple, St. Polycarp, St. John said it so often, they got tired of it. Even though St. John was our Lord s own special friend and an apostle, a saint and a bishop, the people objected to his constant repetition of those words, Love one another. They said, You always tell us the same thing. I guess this is because we can never hear these words enough. They are at the very center of our lives. They tell us who we are and who we are called to be. They even tell us how we will come to know God, since John also said, everyone who loves is begotten by God and knows God. Whoever is without love does not know God, for God is love. There is a great secret in these words. This is the great lesson of life that we must learn over and over again. We don t find God in books or words, but in loving one another. It really makes everything so simple in some sense because it gives us basic question to work with when we are wondering how we re doing in life. Am I a loving person, do I really care about others and show that care in concrete, particular ways? If I do, then I know God. If I do it well, then I know God even better. We don t have two loves living inside of ourselves love of God and love of one another. The Scriptures clearly tell us that this is one love. If we love God, then we love one another if we love one another, then we love God. There is no separation here. That is why when we neglect one another, we neglect God. Our love for one another must find its beginning in our own families and communities. It is here that we learn what it means to love the difficult and sometimes annoying person, because we are all difficult and annoying at times. Just as a husband and wife pledge to love one another in good times and in bad, in sickness and in health, so do we with one another. Christian love is not love only when the sun is shining. It also finds its way through the pouring rain and in the gloom of nighttime. We must remember that we grow into loving people. It is a process that never finishes and that calls for patience and perseverance. Discouragement can be so great that it can kill our desire to continue loving, or prevent us from starting over again if we have fallen out of practice. St John of the Cross seems to sum it all up when he says: In the evening of life we shall be judged on love. And so my dear brothers and sisters, all I can say is, love one another love one another love one another.
