ST. EULALIA PARISH SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME FEBRUARY 12, 2017 PARISH MINISTRIES AND ACTIVITIES Meeting Christ In Prayer Coming Soon Meeting Christ in Prayer is an engaging eight-week guided prayer experience designed for small groups. It is modeled on the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola, which is a tried- and-true method of spiritual renewal. By means of prayer, reflection, and faith sharing, Meeting Christ in Prayer introduces participants to various ways of praying, helps them form regular habits of prayer, and provides them with an opportunity to meet Christ anew and to experience support in the Christian life in a new way. It can also inspire a profound sense of mission that urges participants to a new level of discipleship. Who should participate? Adults and young adults (11th grade upwards) who want to renew their Christian faith or enrich their prayer life can participate. Meeting Christ in Prayer is designed to serve many groups of people, such as the following: people who are hungry for a deeper spiritual life people who are actively seeking to learn more about their faith people seeking spiritual renewal people looking to form regular prayer habits or try new ways of praying people who desire the support of others people who want to be aware of God s presence in their daily lives What does it offer? Meeting Christ in Prayer combines eight weekly small-group meetings with daily prayer and reflection exercises that are completed individually between each gathering. All materials and support needed for the weekly meetings and the daily prayer exercises are provided. Each member of a group will receive a Participant Guide. The eight weekly meetings, each one an hour and fifteen minutes in length, include group prayer, guided meditation, faith sharing and reflection, an orientation to Scripture readings, simple prayer technique exercises, and an overview of the individual prayer exercises to be practiced in the week ahead. The individual daily prayer exercises have three segments: (1) a brief prayer in the morning, (2) a brief review of the day in the evening, and (3) a period of extended personal prayer at some time during the day. It is recommended that the extended period of prayer last between twenty and thirty minutes daily. For further information Contact Stephanie Rogers or Mike Cunningham STATEMENT OF THE ARCHDIOCESE OF BOSTON ON THE TRAVEL BAN Today, at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross, Cardinal O Malley, joined by Governor Baker, Mayor Walsh, Boston Police Commissioner Evans, and Greek Orthodox Metropolitan Methodios, met with leaders from the Muslim community of Greater Boston. The meeting provided the opportunity for all present to come together in prayer, solidarity and support during these challenging times. The discussion included recognition that Catholics and Muslims share a concern for the common good and together uphold our nation s founding principles of religious liberty and acceptance. Our country has been greatly enriched by our Muslim brothers and sisters who contribute much to the civic, social and spiritual life of our local communities. Together we pray that our nation s proud tradition of welcome and acceptance will be strengthened as we go forward in service to our people. Page 2 Photo credit: Gregory L. Tracy/The Pilot

ST. EULALIA PARISH FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME FEBRUARY 5, 2017 PARISH MINISTRIES AND ACTIVITIES THE UNBROKEN WORD This week we celebrate the feast of our parish patron saint, St. Eulalia of Barcelona. While most reading this reflection will know her history, it s interesting to note the origin of her name is derived from the Greek meaning to be articulate. St. Eulalia s response to the Roman emperor s demand that she deny Christ was certainly met with the most articulate and courageous act. One which led to her physical demise and certain place with God in perpetuity. This certitude by which she, as with many saints, welcomed their martyrdom is often hard for us to understand. Yet it is this powerful faith we are all called towards. God is eternally present with us, even in the most difficult times, and we are called to respond and notice Him. We may never be asked to offer our lives for our faith under pain of death. Yet, when we ignore those who are helpless, those in pain, even those separated from God through addiction or misfortune are we are being called to deny Him? Our everyday life presents us with opportunities to do His will. Saints such as St. Eulalia had enough faith and knowledge of God that they were willing to make this sacrifice, and by doing so helped to build up the Body of Christ on earth. The Church. Us. This week, as we look towards Lent, perhaps St. Eulalia can inspire us to be that slightly better person, not by giving up our life in sacrifice, but by honoring Christ s sacrifice with our own articulate response in our deeds and actions. St. Eulalia pray for us Michael Cunningham is Director of Faith Formation for St. Eulalia Parish Watercolor created by Michael J. Cunningham 2017 REV. THOMAS F. NESTOR 2017 SCHOLARSHIP AWARD The Rev. Thomas F. Nestor Scholarship Fund ( fund ) was established in 2012 by the parishioners of Saint Eulalia Parish to honor Fr. Tom on his departure as pastor for assignment to another parish. Fr. Tom was Pastor of Saint Eulalia Church from September 2005 through August 2012. Any high school or college age parishioner wishing to apply for the scholarship should complete and submit the application form no later than April 5, 2017. The scholarship will be granted to the recipients on Sunday, May 7, 2017 at the 5 PM Mass. APPLICATIONS ARE AVAILABLE IN THE FOYER OR IN THE PARISH OFFICE We continue to welcome donations to this Scholarship Fund. Checks should be made payable to Rev. Thomas F. Nestor Scholarship Fund and dropped in the OSR box or mailed to the office. Any amount is welcome. Thank you. BEREAVEMENT SUPPORT GROUP Saint Eulalia Parish is offering a Bereavement Support Group which will meet in the Parish Center off the parking lot for six consecutive Tuesday evenings from 6:00-7:30 PM beginning March 21st and continuing through April 25th. Topics will include an overview of the bereavement process, signs and symptoms of grief, feelings associated with bereavement, and the uniqueness of each person s grief. Participants will have the opportunity to share their experiences with one another in a caring and supportive atmosphere. We have limited space, so pre-registration is required by March 18th. No fee, but a voluntary donation is appreciated to cover costs of materials. To register for the group or to obtain further information, please call Barbara Mahoney, Pastoral Care Coordinator, at 781-729-8220, ext. 16. CATECHISTS AND TEEN LEADERS WANTED! The teen program is now looking for a few individuals who are willing to volunteer about 90 minutes of their time to our Faith Formation program. This is a wonderful way of connecting with the youth of our parish and providing spiritual nourishment for yourself in the process. If you are interested in this very special and rewarding ministry please contact Mike Cunningham via email mcunningham@sainteulalia.org) or phone 781 729 8220 ext. 19 for more details. FOOD DRIVE Next weekend our parish is holding its monthly food drive. Please leave food bags in the stairwell on the Pepper Hill side of the church. Checks payable to St. Eulalia or cash should be left in an envelope marked Food and placed in the OSR box. This month the food will be allocated to St. Matthew s Food Pantry. FRESH FOOD DRIVE Remember that during the food collection weekend each month, we are also collecting fresh fruits and vegetables. There will be a cart in the foyer where the donations may be placed before Mass. These will be delivered to St. Matthew s Food Pantry. Thank you for your generosity. Page 4
