ENOCH FISHER STORY Smith County History by Smith County Homecoming 86 Heritage Committee F298, pg. 475 Enoch was born January 23, 1830, in Smith Co., TN. He was one of six children born to Cornelius Fisher, a native of North Caroline. His brothers and sisters were: Narcissia who married Thomas Nixon; James Harvey who married Rachael Winchester; Caroline who married Calvin W. Holly; Mary "Polly" who married John McGuffee and Franklin Pierce who was married to S. F. Kinnard, Margaret Elizabeth (Lowe) Kinnard, and Fannie Maxwell. Pierce was the postmaster for the town in which he lived and said town was named for his daughter, Boma. Enoch married Mary Caroline Null, daughter of Jacob and Jane Woven Null, February 19, 1854. They may have had one child, Sarah, but at the present I have been unable to find anything on her. I do know Mary was born December 15, 1830, and died December 23, 1856. As the Civil War was raging, Enoch enlisted September 23, 1861, at or near Buffalo Valley, Putnam Co., TN in Shaw's Company, Co. F, 25th TN Regiment Infantry. He was listed on the roll at Fort Myers by Lt. A. B. Hardcastle, for a period of twelve months on May 10, 1862 he was elected 1st Lieutenant at Corrinth, Mississippi. While in the service he contracted cholera "flux" and a kidney disorder and was hospitalized in Chattanooga. On September 16, 1863, Enoch was discharged from the service due to the poor condition of his health. After his discharge from the service, he returned to his home in Punch (Watervale) to farm. In 1864 he married Elizabeth Malone, the daughter of Yancy and Rhoda Malone. To this union were born two children, Mary Lee who married John Wesley Word and James Neal "Jim" who married Mary Ann Johnson. Elizabeth died August 10, 1868. On October 9, 1869, Enoch married Sarah Jane "Tumpie" Violett, the daughter of Chapman Romel and Jane Harriett Hazzard Violett, on her 20th birthday. Sarah was born October 9, 1849 and died July 13, 1936. To this union were born six children: Joseph Chapman "Joe" who married Ludie M. Mofield; Amanda Jane "Mandy" who married Thomas Winfield Hailey; Susan Evelyn who married James Thomas Clark and Harrison Lee Douglas; Narcissia Pendexter "Dexter" who married John Wilson and John Silas Pope; Nancy Virginia "Nannie" was married Stephen Henry Hailey; and a baby boy who only lived two weeks. Enoch and Sarah Jane made their home in Punch (Watervale). Most of Enoch's life was spent farming with the exception of his years in the service. He was able to read and write which was an accomplishment for the times as so many did not have the opportunity to get an education. Enoch departed this life December 2, 1910, and was laid to rest in the cemetery on Burr Manning's place in Watervale. At the end of her life, Sarah Jane was laid to rest beside him. Story by Linda F. Narcissa Pendexter Fisher, known as Dexter or Dex was born June 6, 1881 in Smith Co., TN (most probably in Payne's Bend) to Enoch Fisher and Sarah Jane Violett Fisher. She married twice, first to John. H. Wilson who had come to Carthage, TN from Texas to work on the new bridge being built at Carthage. She next married John Silas Pope (b. May 30, 1858, d. Aug. 2, 1941) son of Jesse Pope and Cerena Pachal Pope. She passed away Jan.11, 1929 and is buried at the Burr Manning Cemetery, out from Punch/Watervale, TN. CHAPMAN ROMEL VIOLETT OBT. (1811 1890) In Rememberance The angel of death has visited our community and has taken a dear beloved father from our side. C. R. Violett was born in Forquire County, Virginia, Aug. 7th, 1811 and moved to Smith County in 1826. He professed faith in Christ at Good Hope Camp Ground in 1830. He was married to Jane H. Hazard Dec. 23, 1834, joined the M. E. church at Mt. Olivet in which he lived a consistent member until his death. He was taken with heart disease in March 1889 with which he lingered until his death January the 4th, 1890. He leaves a companion and five children and many grand children, relatives and friends to mourn his loss. Though we should humbly bow to the will of Him who doeth all things well, it is very sad to give up a dear father. But ties must be broken, some circles must be vacant and some hearts be left to mourn. We who sit with tearful eyes and bleeding hearts, feel that he has been accepted as one fit to dwell in a better world than this. And the one, for whom we mourn, knows no sorrow, grief nor pain. The one who watches over us, both night and day saw best to take him home. A precious father, from us is gone. A voice we loved is still. A place is vacant in the home which never can be filled. Mother, sisters, and brother, he can not come to us, but we can go to him. May it be our greatest effort through life, to so live that when death comes we may be prepared to meet the one that is gone. Oh! Call it not death. It is life begun. For the waters are passed. the home is won. The ransomed spirit, hath reached the shore. Where they weep, suffer and sin no more, and is safe to our father's house above. In the place prepared by our Savior's love. To depart from a world of sin and strife, And to be with Jesus! Yes! This is life! In this dark world of din and pain We only meet to part again. But when we reach that happy shore We then shall meet to part no more. Nannie H. Malone (Nancy Harriet Violett, b. Apr. 29, 1857, d Oct 2, 1921) Transcriber Comments: Chapman Romel Violett and family made their home on Lost Creek off of Kenney's Bend Road. The farm is still in the family. It passed to C. R.'s daughter, Susan, who having no children, left it to her sister's daughter Nancy Fisher (who married Stephen Henry Haley), daughter of Enoch Fisher. Chapman Romel Violett and his wife, Jane Harriet Hazzard are buried in the cemetery on the property along with many members of the family. Jane Harriet Hazzard was the daughter of Lewis and Susannah Davis Hazzard. Lewis Hazzard, so I understand, deeded the property that the church stood on to Mt. Olivet Church, when it was on the Bend. His farm was across the road from the church and his grave is located on his old farm, which is now the property of the Kinslow family.. My grandmother was christened at that church and was a member for most of her life. The church building was moved out to Rock City on Rte.70 because of declining membership in 1927. A few years ago, the church was abandoned by the Methodists and it was remodeled. Another faith is now using it. I remember that when I was a young lad of 6 or 7, we were visiting my grandmother on Hogan's Creek and she had the church organ stored at her home while the church was been remodeled. It was a tall reed organ and I was fascinated by it. It was shortly after that my grandmother changed her membership to the Hogan's Creek Baptist Church where she later became a deacon. This inflammation often begins when infections that cause sore throats, colds, or other respiratory or breathing problems spread to the middle ear. These can be viral or bacterial infections. Otitis media not only causes severe pain but may result in serious complications if it is not treated. An untreated infection can travel from the middle ear to the nearby parts of the head, including the brain. PARENTS: Charles Fisher, buried in Smellage Cemetery & Avo Hamilton, b. Putnam Co., TN. Note: posted by Jim Clark Enoch Fisher enlisted in the Confederate Army on September 23, 1861 at or near Buffalo Valley, Putnam Co., TN in Shaw's Company, Company F, 25th Tennessee Regiment Infantry. He was listed on the roll at Fort Myers by Lt. A. B. Hardcastle, for a period of twelve months. On May 19, 1862, he was elected 1st Lt. at Cornith, MS (Battle of Shiloh) While in the service he contracted cholera, "flux" and a kidney disorder and was hospitalized in Chattanooga, TN. On September 16, 1863 Enoch was discharged from the service due to poor health. He returned to his home in Punch (Watervale), Smith County, TN where he married for the second time, to Elizabeth Malone. 1st Lt.
