George Two-Gun Massey By Gracie Stover Golden George Massey was born February 8, 1920, at Marfork, Raleigh County, West Virginia. George was the son of Abraham Lincoln (Aubry) Massey and Della Sparks. He began working in the coal mines at the age of thirteen to help feed his younger brothers and sisters, since their father was deceased. He was a World War II U. S. Navy veteran, whose nickname was Smiley, in the service. Marfork, about 1925 When George Massey was 31 years old, he met and married a widow, Betty Jo Stilwell Stover, with two children. Those children were five-year-old Herbert, and three-year-old Gracie Stover. George and Betty had three more children: George, Shirley, and Johnny. Mr. Massey worked as an electrician in the coal mines to raise all five of these children, whom he considered all as his own. He became a born again Christian and attended the Church of God in Dorothy, whose pastor was Tommy Wingo. He raised his family in Packsville, Raleigh County, and then moved to Dry Creek, Raleigh County. He died at his home in Dry Creek, Raleigh County, on July 18, 1999. The minister at his funeral was Tommy Wingo, who was not only his pastor, but a lifelong friend and fellow coal miner. Della Sparks and Abra Massey Della Sparks was born June 21, 1904, at Vanceberg, Kentucky, and died December 24, 1998. Her parents were George Sparks and Ella Belle Riley, who lived at Marfork, Raleigh County, listed in the 1920 Raleigh County Census, with their daughter Della Massey. George and Ella are still living and listed in the 1930 Raleigh County Census, while their daughter Della and her husband Abraham Abra Massey are listed in their own household with their children: Junior (George), Vernon, Betty, James L., and Bill Massey. Abe died January 2, 1931, at the age of 31 at their home at Marfork. Abraham s parents were Lincoln Massey and Alice Ann Nelson.

Della married second Blaine Daniel who was the son of Lewis M. Daniel and Sarah F. Ballard. Their children were Maynard and Jackie Daniel. Della married third John A. Buster Stanley. He was the son of William Marshall and Eliza May Ewing Stanley. John was born in Raleigh County on August 10, 1915. He died February 20, 2000. Lincoln Massey and Alice Ann Nelson Abraham Lincoln Link Massey was born about 1866 in Boone County. His parents were Squire Bailey Massey and Wilmouth Massey. He is listed in the 1870 Boone County census as Abraham, but the later census records have him as Lincoln Massey. He was married to Alice Ann Nelson, and his children were Abraham Aubry, Oliver, Edgar, Biddle, George, Thomas, and Doshie. -Abraham Aubry, was married to Della Sparks. -Oliver Massey was born about 1892 and married Rhoda Stanley. Their children were Eva, Arthur, Reba, Clyde, Claude, Robert, and Sadie. Oliver also married Pliney Elizabeth Ward, daughter of George Ward and Susan Jarrell. Their son was Jerry Massey. Oliver is listed in the 1910 Boone County Census and in the 1920 Raleigh County Census. -Edgar Massey was born about 1893, and married to Margie. They are listed in the 1920 Raleigh County census with their son William. -Joseph Biddle Massey was born about 1896 and was married to Nellie. Their children were Clifford, Eugene, and Junior. George and Hattie Massey -George Massey and his wife Hattie and had a son they called Dump Massey, according to Della Sparks. -Thomas G. Massey was born in January 1889. Lincoln and Alice divorced, and they both remarried. Alice married Charles Meadows, and Lincoln married Sarah Blankenship. Sarah was the daughter of David Mangus Blankenship and Penelope Runyan. 2

Her first marriage was to John Harper, son of Joseph Harper, Sr., and Francis Stover, on August 25, 1850, in Raleigh County, and her parents are given as Henry and Mary Massey. She then married Squire Bailey Massey on December 3, 1854, in Raleigh County. The marriage record states: Squire Massey, age 36, born Monroe County, son of John D. and Nancy And Willmonette Harper, 26, divorced, born Logan County, daughter of Henry and Polly. Married by Felix Ellison. December 3, 1854. Raleigh County. Squire Bailey was born about 1816 in Ohley, Boone County. His parents were John D. Massey and Nancy Scott. He is listed on the 1850 Boone County Census with his parents, and he is also listed in the 1860 and 1870 Boone County census, with his wife Wilmoth and family. In the 1880 census, Wilmouth is a widow and listed with her children. Squire and Wilmoth s children were Joseph, Abraham Lincoln, William H., Alice, Thomas, Emily, Virginia, Amy, and Oley. 3

Massey and Nancy Scott John Donnaly Massey, son of Henry and Helen Scott Massey, was born about 1797. John married Nancy Scott on April 23, 1815, in Monroe County, Virginia. Nancy was born about 1795 and was a daughter of John Scott and Amelia Cooper. -Squire Massey, born about 1820, married Wilmouth Massey. -Thomas B. Massey, born about 1825, married first Catherine Massey on February 28, 1853, in Raleigh County. Catherine s parents were William Massey, Sr., and Martha Lafferty. Thomas married second Mary Vance, daughter of William Vance and Nancy Margaret Toler. -Linville Massey was born about 1830, in Boone County, and died February 1, 1890, in Kanawha County. He married Lucinda Clay, daughter of Charles Lewis Clay and Ora Belle Stewart, on January 20, 1853, in Raleigh County. Their children were Phoebe, Nancy, Samantha, Ella, Victoria, Almonta, John, and Charles. -Eliza Jane Massey was born about 1831 and died November 16, 1897. She married Martin C. Mankin on September 4, 1868, in Kanawha County. -Henderson Massey, born about 1832, married Mary Williams on February 25, 1858, in Kanawha County, and married Rebecca Allen on December 22, 1877, in Kanawha County. -Emily Massey, born about 1832, married Ward Lawrence on June 24, 1858, in Kanawha County. -Lewis Fry Donley Massey was born June 10, 1834, in Boone County, and died November 16, 1897, in Boone County. He married Nancy E. Cooper, daughter of John Cooper and Celia Estep. 5
