TWENTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME August 30, 2015 Pastor s Note August 29 - September 5 In Memory of Rose Frankina Saint Martin s community and many other parishes and individuals were blessed by Rose s smile. For a while, we shared the gift of her many years among us. Now she lives forever in the House of the Father. I thought it would be appropriate to memorialize Rose. There are people who are bearers of a special gift; for Rose, this was her kindness. Our Rose, like the perfumed flower, was a pleasing presence to all of the parish activities in which she participated. Her kind smile was able to bring light to all she met. I hope and pray that each one of us who remembers Rose will imitate her life. That is precisely why God gives us persons like Rose, to be an inspiration to all of us. I believe that each person has a special mission, and fulfilling that mission is how he or she gives testimony to the presence of God among us. We need testimonies like hers in these times in which we live. They remind us that, in the end, love overcomes all things, even death, because her deeds are not dead but alive before us and before the Lord. There is an affirmation, which she already heard from the Lord: I was sick and you visited me Rose showed such wonderful love for those in need. For her, the ill were not just anonymous persons, but bothers and sisters in the Lord, and Rose showed them the face of our Lord and His kindness. Our Rose continues now to see what she always saw when she was among us: the face of God, but no longer in her suffering sisters and brothers, for now she beholds the face of God Himself. I pray and I hope that all who were touched by the kindness of Rose Frankina will be inspired by her life to be also the hands of God in this world and the face of God for all in need. Our condolences to the family especially to Joe Frankina, since I try to remember but I don t remember a moment in which I saw Joe, that Saturday 5:00 Mary MacLean Sunday 7:00 Con Harvey 8:30 James Maloney 10:00 Maria & Dominador Guevara 11:30 Antonio Rosano 6:00 St. Martin Parishioners Monday 8:00 Corazon Magat Tuesday 8:00 Rite to Life Wednesday 8:00 George Borella Thursday 8:00 Rose Frankina Friday 8:00 The Frankina Family Saturday 8:00 Claire LaMeire Rose was not at his side, or Rose and Joe with her. Calendar of Events While we all felt the heat in July, last week s announcement from NASA scientist that July 2015 was the warmest month on record since the 1880 s. Scientists expect that 2015 will surpass last year as the hottest year on record. In another study from researchers at Columbia University, NASA and the University of Idaho found that higher temperatures during California s four years of drought have exacerbated the evaporation of water supplies, making the drought 15 to 20 percent more severe. If the present rate of warming and evaporation continues California will be in a semi-permanent state of drought interrupted by intense storms in just 50 years. Carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases have increased 40 percent over the past 250 years, and they are now at their highest rate in at least 800,000 years, according to measurements from Antarctica. Climate scientists and the Vatican agree that the planet is warming because of the buildup of greenhouses gases, largely driven by man-made activity. This latest news is a powerful reminder of the reality of climate change and its impact on our shared home. As Pope Francis has reminded us of our responsibility to be stewards of God s creation and to protect the most vulnerable. We all can do our part to reduce our contribution to greenhouse gases. We need to approach the impacts of climate change with hope and faith that we can make changes to protect our home and our brothers and sisters. 9/11 Adoration in the Church 7PM 9/14 Food Box Sorting -6:30 Meeting Room 9/18 Food Box Packing-6:30 Bailey House RCIA What do you hear God saying to you in these lovely, relaxing days of deep summer? In the warmer, longer days, perhaps you can hear God calling you by name. If so, how do you respond? If you have been pondering becoming Catholic as a way to respond to God s love, RCIA may be for you. Come and See! Each Thursday at 7 PM.

Twenty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time August 30, 2015 Humbly welcome the word that has been planted in you and is able to save your souls. James 1:21b Welcome We are pleased to have Fr. Proful, a visiting priest from the Diocese of Berhampur Odisha, (India) at St. Martins until the end of September. Please welcome him to the Community! Peace & Justice Commission URGENT NEED! The clothes closet is nearly empty. These clothes are for our fellow citizens who are working to reenter society after a time in prison, most from Elmwood. Please set aside slightly warn or new clothes appropriate for any kind of employment--office, construction, restaurant, etc. New socks and underclothes are also needed. Your donations will be collected in September (watch this space) and put to good use. Peace & Justice A group of parishioners has formed a sequel to the Lenten Series on non-violence. They are meeting for a 13-week look at the principles of non-violence, practicing communication based on mutual interests rather than ones own felt needs. The hope is that as more people learn to communicate in less combative ways, our society as a whole will become less violent. If you want more information and/or may wish to join the group, contact Patrick OʼMeara at meandpj@comcast.net. St. Vincent De Paul Society Donate your car to help those in need. Cars with dents can help pay rents 1-800-322-8284 Please tell the operator you are St. Vincent de Paul News Thank you, thank you, thank you, to all those who continue to contribute to the St. Vincent de Paul Society collection. Through your generosity the society is able to meet the basic financial needs of some of our parish members who can't make ends meet in the Silicon Valley economy. However, to speed up the distribution process we ask that you make your checks "Paid to the Order" of St. Vincent de Paul, NOT St. Martin's Church. This will get the contribution in the hands of the society efficiently. Also, the volunteers who administer the distribution of funds is far understaffed and the numbers continue to shrink. We need more volunteers to help in the interview and distribution approval process. This is a rewarding and necessary opportunity to become a member of St. Martin's Pastoral Care Ministry and follow the Lord's commandment to help the poor. There is an excellent training program to make this as easy as possible and requires as little as one hour a week of your time. If interested, please call (408) 439-0342.
