Dear Brothers and Sisters, I love one-liners. If I could make my homilies one-liners, I certainly would. I m sure many of you would love it too. One of our parishioners sent me this email of Christian one-liners and each is a homily in itself: Many folks want to serve God, but only as advisors. The good Lord didn't create anything without a purpose, but mosquitoes come close. People are funny; they want the front of the bus, the middle of the road, and the back of the church. Opportunity may knock once, but temptation bangs on your front door forever. Quit griping about your church; if it were perfect, you couldn't belong. I don't know why some people change churches; what difference does it make which one you stay home from? Don't put a question mark where God put a period. Forbidden fruits create many jams. God promises a safe landing, not a calm passage. If God is your Co-pilot, then swap seats! (And my favorite) It is easier to preach ten homilies than it is to live one. I hope one or two of these lines will help keep your thoughts on the Lord for the rest of the day. Peace, Fr. Chris TODAY S READINGS First Reading -- The church was being built up, and grew in numbers (Acts 9:26-31). Psalm -- I will praise you, Lord, in the assembly of your people (Psalm 22). Second Reading -- Let us love not in word or speech, but in deed and truth (1 John 3:18-24). Gospel -- Remain in me, as I remain in you. I am the vine, you are the branches (John 15:1-8). He has a middle school education and earns $55 a week working in a sewing factory. They have been together 14 years and have 2 children: Luis who is 16 and in high school, Tania, 10 years old and in 5th grade. Teresa was on bed rest and recently had a miscarriage. WHY REGISTER IN A PARISH? Have you ever wondered why you need to register with your Church? Can t you just come to Mass and go about your business? Of course, the answer to that is, yes, you can. But did you know that your registration affects the parish in many ways. Here are some good reasons to register: A sense of belonging and identity in a parish community. Provides the parish community with a way to welcome you. Census numbers can determine how many priests are assigned to a parish. How many masses and programs are planned and scheduled. In times of joy and in times of struggle, it is comforting to have the support of a faith family. It is a commitment to practice your faith. Gives a chance for you and your family to be counted and heard in the parish. Being included in the demographics of the parish helps to plan for the needs of the parish. Gives the parish a way to connect with you. In order to receive the Sacraments of Baptism, First Reconciliation, First Holy Communion, Confirmation, or Holy Matrimony you will need to be a registered member. For religious education instruction and Sacramental preparation, the families of those attending must also be registered parishioners. Additionally, when you require a Catholic in Good Standing letter to be considered as a sponsor for Baptism or Confirmation, we must have a registration on file to testify. Acquiring a yearly tax statement. Church is about our experience of God in community. The first step to community is getting to know one another. When people register at the church, it gives the staff an opportunity to know a little about you: your name, where you live, your profession, languages you speak, your interests, hobbies, etc. It also gives you a chance to know your church better because the staff can then contact you and keep you informed. Registering is the first step toward getting involved and becoming a member of the community. Also, there are rights and responsibilities that come with membership. This holds true for the person who registers and for the staff. We have a responsibility toward our members. God has given the pastor and the staff the role of caring for the flock that gathers here. It is our call from God to make available to our members the sacraments, religious education, and spiritual support whether it is a good period in your life or a difficult time. We also have the responsibility to make it possible for our members to live their baptismal call by providing opportunities to get involved in ministry and service. Members have rights and responsibilities also. All Christians are called to take an active role in the work of the Body of Christ. You have a right to all that is listed above, which is our responsibility to provide. And you are also responsible for your parish community. You have the responsibility to support the work of the church by giving of your time, by giving of your talents which come from God, and by giving of your treasure in financial support of your church. Registering in the parish is a statement of faith and confidence in the life and work of our parish. As parish members, we are all here to help each other on our spiritual journey, we don t want to do this alone. As much as you need us, we need you too. For those who have registered already, we thank you and want you to know that we are working hard for you. If you haven t registered yet, please take 5 minutes and stop by the parish office so we can welcome you and complete the registration form. Page 6
