Road to Emmaus Preschool lesson p 1 Intro Quick Review of Jesus Life (Jesus Standup). Last week we learned about Jesus! Here s a rhyme that tells us about him: Jesus loved everyone. He lived a life of love. Jesus was the Son of God, so he could do all. He patiently taught people things from above. Jesus prayed to God often. On him he would call. He healed the sick and made the blind see! Many people loved Jesus, followed him around. He even calmed storms on the sea! They followed him to the country or into town. But some of the leaders did not love Jesus. They came and took Jesus away. (Crown of Thorns). They treated him like a criminal and hurt him very badly, even though he had done nothing wrong! (Cross). His hands and feet were nailed to a cross. He hung there for a long, long time. After Jesus died, his body was placed in a tomb. A tomb is like a cave. That s how people were buried in those days. (Place mummy in tomb, and place stone over it). It was shut tight with a big stone. (Sad Disciples, Sad Women) Jesus friends went home very sad that day. They thought they would never see Jesus again. (Hold up one, two, then three fingers). Then one day went by, then two days. And on the third day, something wonderful happened! Jesus came back to life, just like he said he would! (Angel by Tomb). (Happy Women) The women had been first ones who saw Jesus after he had risen from the grave! Jesus told them to go back and tell the others! (Mary Tells Others). So, that s what they did. Peter and another disciple ran to the tomb to find out for themselves what happened. They only saw the empty grave cloths. But no Jesus! So they were still wondering about all of this. They didn t know what to believe. Let s see what happens next. You can help me tell the story! It ll be fun! Bible Story and Activity: Let s See the Bible People (Disciples Walking). Later that same day, two of Jesus friends were walking along a road. One was Cleopas. The Bible doesn t tell us who the other one was. They were going from Jerusalem (Jerusalem) to Emmaus (Emmaus). They were very sad. They missed Jesus! They were talking about everything that had happened to him. While they were walking, someone came up and walked along the road with them. Can you guess who it was? (Let children answer). Yes, it was Jesus! But, Cleopas and his friend didn t know that it was Jesus. Road to Emmaus Rhyme Jesus was friendly. He talked to them and asked Cleopas and his friend what they were talking about. Cleopas answered: Are you just visiting? Haven t you heard? They saw where Jesus body had been laid. Don t you know what happened to the Lord? And angels told them he was alive again! We all loved Jesus! But he was taken from us! Others ran to the tomb and they found, He suffered and died upon the cross! That Jesus was not any where around! Some of the women had gone to the tomb. They would tell us what happened very soon. Jesus Answers Rhyme Then it was Jesus turn to talk. He explained to them that everything that had happened to him was part of God s great plan. Here s what he said to them: You re slow to believe what the prophets said, In the Scriptures, haven t you read? Jesus told what was written about him long ago. After all this, they still didn t know: That JESUS was the one who was talking! As along the road, they went a-walking!

Road to Emmaus Preschool lesson p 2 Rhyme with Actions: It s Really Jesus! When they got to the town of Em-ma -us. Walk two fingers. They said to Jesus, Please stay with us! Motion to come with hands. So they all sat down to eat that day. Make circle with fingers. Before they ate Jesus began to pray. Put hands together in prayer. Jesus took the bread and broke it in two. Hold up two fingers.(disciples in Emmaus) It was right then, that they knew: Make eyes big, point to head. The one with them was JESUS so near! Make cross with fingers. And, right at that moment, Jesus disappeared! Snap your fingers. They ran back to Jerusalem -- all the way! Walk two fingers quickly. To tell the others, they saw Jesus that day! Point to eyes. The others were all together with some friends. (Disciples tell others) So they told what happened from start to end. Hold out one hand, then the other. How Jesus showed up as they walked to Emmaus. Walk two fingers. How he explained the Messiah would surely save us! Make cross with fingers. The others said, Jesus is alive! It is true! Throw hands up in the air. He appeared to Simon, but nobody knew. Point to disciple in picture. And as they were still talking, guess who showed up? Put hand over mouth. Yes, JESUS came and stood, with the grown-ups! Motion to come here. They thought he was a ghost; they were scared! Make scared face. But Jesus spoke gently, because he cared! Hug yourself. He asked, Why do you doubt? Touch me and see! Hold out hands. They were amazed, didn t know what to believe! Put both hands on face. So Jesus asked, Do you have some food? Hold hands out to side. He ate some fish in everyone s view. Pretend to chew. Then Jesus explained why he died on the cross. Make cross with fingers. How he was raised from the dead, after their loss. Raise hand from low to straight up. Now, everywhere, repentance will be preached! Hold hands high. People of every color, will be reached. Make circular motion with hand. Everyone will know, about forgiveness of sins! Make circular motion with hand. And by trusting in Jesus, how new life begins! Make cross with fingers. So Jesus appeared to even more people over the next 40 days, and he taught them all about God! Transition: Did you like that story? It s a true story. It really happened. Next week we ll hear how Jesus went back to heaven. I hope you can all come back. Let s have snack, then we ll talk about the story!

Road to Emmaus Preschool lesson p3 Talk Time: Jesus Came to Save Us! When Jesus walked along the road with the disciples, he was so patient! He explained to Cleopas and his friend everything that had been told about him in the Bible long ago, and how it had come true! Then he showed up at the house where the disciples were all together! He taught them all about sins and forgiveness. Here s what he said: (Read Luke 24:46-47). Then he explained everything so they could understand. So, now I ll explain to you: Long before Jesus lived on the earth, (Put God sign at one end of road). God gave Moses the 10 commandments, or 10 rules to show us how to live, and to show people what sin was. (Put Sin at the other end). Who can tell me what sin is? (Let children answer). Yes, it s the wrong things we do. When we don t obey God s rules, we fight and say mean things. We take things that aren t ours, or we don t tell the truth. We ll make marks on the children to be the sin spots. (Put some marks on the kids hearts. Put Standups on the Sin end). When we sin we should be punished. God knew that people weren t perfect and that they would sin. But he loves us very much more than we can every know! So, God promised to send a Savior who would die for all people, so their sins could be forgiven! That s why Jesus died on the cross (Cross picture): So we could be right with God, and so we would NOT have to be punished for our sins! Jesus was punished for EVERY WRONG THING we EVER do! And he never did anything wrong! He didn t deserve it! And he suffered mocking, and beating. He hurt very badly as hung on the cross for hours before he died! He did all that, so that we could be forgiven of ALL of our sins! He loves you that much! And how do we know God has the power to forgive sins? Because he had the power to raise Jesus from the grave after he died! God can do anything! He made us, and he loves us so much that he gave us a way to be forgiven! If we believe that Jesus died on the cross for our sins and trust in him, he will save us! When we re sorry for our sins, we ask God to forgive us. We repent from our sins. That means we turn around, and go the other way instead, towards God. (Turn Standups around and Walk them closer to God). And God forgives us: He wipes our sin away and makes our hearts clean! (Put clean heart stickers over Standups hearts). Then he gives us the Holy Spirit to help us follow Jesus, and we become a little more like Jesus each day! And, we get to live forever with God and Jesus some day! This Bible verse tells us all about it. (Read John 3:16). Transition: I hope you can all come back next week. We ll learn how Jesus went back to heaven! Prayer Sample: (This is just an example of what you could say. Listen to the Holy Spirit.) Give children a chance to pray also. Let Me Pray - Prayer Time Dear God, Thank you for loving us so much that you had a great plan for Jesus to save us! As we understand more about Jesus, help us to put our trust in him. We want to go your way, not towards sin. In Jesus' name.
