EIGHTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST JULY 19, 2015

Welcome to St. James/Santiago Apóstol Lutheran Church We re glad you re here! Our mission is to help you grow in your relationship with God and with all of God s people. Our worship services are designed to gather us as God's people, to hear God's Word, receive Jesus in bread and wine, and join us with God's people of all times and places. We pray that you will be blessed and encouraged by worshiping here. No matter who you are, God knows you and God loves you. If you are a visitor or guest, we warmly invite you to join our faith community. If you want to know more, please speak to our pastors or a member of our Steering Committee. Below is some information you may find helpful during and after worship. Children and their families are vital to our life and ministry at St. James/Santiago Apóstol. Children are always welcome in worship. In the cry of a baby, or the fussiness of a toddler, we hear a new voice that speaks to God, reminding us that children are a blessing and a joy. If children ever need a break from worship, we have a nursery in the front hallway by the front doors. Holy Communion. All God's children are welcome at the table of the Lord. God loves you, and welcomes you to the Lord s Supper, whether you are a new Christian, a returning one, or someone who is exploring who and what God might mean in your life. Please don't hesitate to come forward and share in the meal with us: there is room for everyone, especially for YOU. Please come forward at the direction of the ushers. We serve it two ways, either by intinction or by individual cups. For Communion by intinction, you will receive a piece of bread or wafer, and dip the bread or wafer in a common cup of wine (red) or grape juice (white). Instead of dipping the bread, you also have the option to eat, and then drink from a common cup. For individual cup Communion, you will receive a piece of bread to eat, and then choose a cup to drink containing wine (red) or grape juice (white). We offer the common cup as well. We also have gluten-free wafers for those with dietary restrictions. Children who do not yet commune and anyone who does not wish to receive Communion are invited to come forward for a blessing. If you desire a blessing, please ask the pastor for one, or simply cross your arms over your chest to indicate that you would like a blessing instead of bread and wine. Please feel free to use the altar rail for prayer after receiving the blessing or Holy Communion. Offerings. We glorify God in our giving. Our offering is an act of worship that makes ministry possible. The offering at this service will support St. James/Santiago Apóstol Lutheran Church and its outreach ministries in this neighborhood of Oak Forest/Garden Oaks/North Houston. A portion also goes to our national church body for mission and ministry around the world. Restrooms are located in the front hallway by the front doors. Learning Hour/Fellowship Time. During the time between our worship services, you are invited to gather in the Fellowship Hall for coffee, juice, hospitality and fellowship. We also offer Learning Groups for adults and children, so please ask anyone how to join a class or small group at any time. If you ever need a Pastor, both Pastor Arthur (713.725.6760) and Pastora Adriana Johnson- Rivas (832.512.7652) prefer that you call them directly on their cell phones. If you know of someone who is scheduled for surgery or is in the hospital, please let us know. If there is an emergency, if you would like a pastoral visit at home, or if you simply have questions about life, faith, or getting more involved, calling us directly on our cell phones is always the best way to reach us. EIGHTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST JULY 19, 2015 10:00 A.M. Evangelical Lutheran Worship (ELW) Setting Three P = Presiding Minister, A = Assisting Minister, C = Congregation INTRODUCTION Mark's gospel makes clear how great was the press of the crowd, with its countless needs to be met, on Jesus and his disciples. Yet in today's gospel Jesus advises his disciples to get away and rest, to take care of themselves. Sometimes we think that when others are in great need we shouldn't think of ourselves at all; but Jesus also honors the caregivers' need. We are sent from Christ's table to care for others and for ourselves. GATHERING The Holy Spirit calls us together as the people of God. CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS. P: In the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. P: God of all mercy and consolation, come to the help of your people, turning us from our sin to live for you alone. Give us the power of your Holy Spirit that we may confess our sin, receive your forgiveness, and grow into the fullness of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. P: Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another. Silence is kept for reflection. P: Most merciful God, we confess that we are captive to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name. Amen. P: In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for us, and for his sake God forgives us all our sins. As a called and ordained minister of the church of Christ, and by his authority, I therefore declare to you the entire forgiveness of all your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Page 2

ENTRANCE HYMN: ELW#646 GREETING P: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. Page 3

HYMN OF PRAISE: Page 4

PRAYER OF THE DAY P: The Lord be with you. And also with you. P: Let us pray. A brief silence is kept before the prayer. P: O God, powerful and compassionate, you shepherd your people, faithfully feeding and protecting us. Heal each of us, and make us a whole people, that we may embody the justice and peace of your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. Please be seated for the readings. WORD God speaks to us in scripture reading, preaching, and song. FIRST READING: Jeremiah 23:1 6 Woe to the shepherds who destroy and scatter the sheep of my pasture! says the LORD. Therefore thus says the LORD, the God of Israel, concerning the shepherds who shepherd my people: It is you who have scattered my flock, and have driven them away, and you have not attended to them. So I will attend to you for your evil doings, says the LORD. Then I myself will gather the remnant of my flock out of all the lands where I have driven them, and I will bring them back to their fold, and they shall be fruitful and multiply. I will raise up shepherds over them who will shepherd them, and they shall not fear any longer, or be dismayed, nor shall any be missing, says the LORD. The days are surely coming, says the LORD, when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, and he shall reign as king and deal wisely, and shall execute justice and righteousness in the land. In his days Judah will be saved and Israel will live in safety. And this is the name by which he will be called: "The LORD is our righteousness." A: The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Page 5

PSALM: Psalm 23 The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not be in want. The LORD makes me lie down in green pastures and leads me be- side still waters. You restore my soul, O LORD, and guide me along right pathways for your name's sake. Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I shall fear no evil; for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. R You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil, and my cup is running over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever. R Page 6

SECOND READING: Ephesians 2:11 22 So then, remember that at one time you Gentiles by birth, called "the uncircumcision" by those who are called "the circumcision" a physical circumcision made in the flesh by human hands remember that you were at that time without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world. But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. For he is our peace; in his flesh he has made both groups into one and has broken down the dividing wall, that is, the hostility between us. He has abolished the law with its commandments and ordinances, that he might create in himself one new humanity in place of the two, thus making peace, and might reconcile both groups to God in one body through the cross, thus putting to death that hostility through it. So he came and proclaimed peace to you who were far off and peace to those who were near; for through him both of us have access in one Spirit to the Father. So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are citizens with the saints and also members of the household of God, built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the cornerstone. In him the whole structure is joined together and grows into a holy temple in the Lord; in whom you also are built together spiritually into a dwelling place for God. A: The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Please stand. The congregation sings the Gospel Acclamation during the Gospel Procession. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION: Page 7

GOSPEL: Mark 6:30 34, 53 56 P: The holy gospel according to Mark. Glory to you, O Lord. The Gospel is announced. When Jesus sent his disciples out to teach and heal, they ministered among large numbers of people. Their work was motivated by Christ's desire to be among those in need. The apostles gathered around Jesus, and told him all that they had done and taught. He said to them, "Come away to a deserted place all by yourselves and rest a while." For many were coming and going, and they had no leisure even to eat. And they went away in the boat to a deserted place by themselves. Now many saw them going and recognized them, and they hurried there on foot from all the towns and arrived ahead of them. As he went ashore, he saw a great crowd; and he had compassion for them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd; and he began to teach them many things. When they had crossed over, they came to land at Gennesaret and moored the boat. When they got out of the boat, people at once recognized him, and rushed about that whole region and began to bring the sick on mats to wherever they heard he was. And wherever he went, into villages or cities or farms, they laid the sick in the marketplaces, and begged him that they might touch even the fringe of his cloak; and all who touched it were healed. P: The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION: SERMON: Pastor Sabine Lamar Page 8

HYMN OF THE DAY: Please stand. ELW#257 Page 9

APOSTLES CREED: P: Let us confess our faith, the faith in which we have been baptized: I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Page 10

PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION A: Gathered by the Holy Spirit and fed by the word, we come together as the people of God to pray for the church, the world, and all in need. A brief silence. A: Holy One, give hope to your church around the world and nurture it with a shepherd's care so that all will remember your faithfulness and love. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great. A: Restore the earth to the goodness you provided at creation. Protect and renew the quiet places of the world. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great. A: Break down walls and hostilities that divide people and nations. Teach us to be neighbors to each other instead of strangers and aliens. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great. A: Give rest to those who care for others in homes, hospitals, long-term care facilities, and hospice. Be with those who are dying, comfort those who grieve, and heal those who are sick. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great. A: Bring calm to those who are troubled because of frantic schedules and lack of leisure. Make this assembly a place of rest and refreshment. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great. Here other intercessions may be offered. A: We give thanks that we are citizens with the saints and members of your household. Keep us in communion with all the faithful departed until we join them around your throne. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great. P: Into your hands, loving God, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in the grace of Jesus our Savior. Amen. PEACE P: The peace of Christ be with you always. And also with you. The ministers and the congregation greet one another in the name of the Lord, saying Peace be with you. After the peace is shared, the congregation sits. ANNOUNCEMENTS Page 11

MEAL God feeds us with the presence of Jesus Christ. OFFERTORY: ELW#778 OFFERING PRAYER Please stand. A: Let us pray. Blessed are you, O God, maker of all things. Through your goodness you have blessed us with these gifts: ourselves, our time, and our possessions. Use us, and what we have gathered, in feeding the world with your love, through the one who gave himself for us, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. Page 12

GREAT THANKSGIVING P: The Lord be with you. And also with you. P: Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. P: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. HOLY COMMUNION P: It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God, through our Savior Jesus Christ. Fulfilling the promise of the resurrection, you pour out the fire of your Spirit, uniting in one body people of ev ry nation and tongue. And so, with Mary Magdalene and Peter and all the witnesses of the resurrection, with earth and sea and all their creatures, and with angels and archangels, cherubim and seraphim, we praise your name and join their unending hymn: THE SANCTUS Page 13

WORDS OF INSTITUTION P: Holy, mighty, and merciful Lord, heaven and earth are full of your glory. In great love you sent to us Jesus, your Son, who reached out to heal the sick and suffering, who preached good news to the poor, and who, on the cross, opened his arms to all. In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. Remembering, therefore, his death, resurrection, and ascension, we await his coming in glory. Pour out upon us the Spirit of your love, O Lord, and unite the wills of all who share this heavenly food, the body and blood of Jesus Christ, our Lord; to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be all honor and glory, now and forever. Amen. THE LORD S PRAYER P: Gathered into one by the Holy Spirit, let us pray as Jesus taught us. Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen. INVITATION TO COMMUNION P: Come to the banquet, for all is now ready. Page 14
