Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time NO BAD NEWS There are many times when we say, "Tell me what I want to hear, and don't confuse me with facts." And we don't take kindly to someone who might be bold enough to snuff out our expectations. The biggest problem with such an attitude is not that we miss out on the truth or the facts, but that we miss out on the new and surprising gifts others can give us. Like the townspeople in today's Gospel story, we too often refuse to allow others to display the talents that can be good news for us. Today's readings call for hospitality and faith and discernment. Hospitality opens the doors of our hearts and minds to the "stranger" among us, no matter how familiar he or she may seem to be. Faith enables us to accept the gifts of others, no matter how alarming or "strange" they may seem to be. Discernment helps us discover the prophets in our midst, no matter how amazing they may seem to be. Hospitality, faith, and discernment--cultivate these. Then, nobody can bring bad news. BAPTISM PREP An important moment in your family and faith journey is the celebration of the sacrament of Baptism. Please take some time to prepare for this great step by attending a Baptism Prep session. This is a time to reflect on the power of the sacrament and the responsibilities of parent and godparent, the history and meaning of the rite and the wonder of God's love for us as a community of faith. Please register for the next session on Sunday, July 22 from 10:30 till noon before you schedule your baptism date. To RSVP, call the Rel Ed office at ext. 12. MANY THANKS FOR A GREAT WEEK During the week of June 25 th, 97 children from 4 years of age through 7 th grade participated in Son Rise National Park Vacation Bible School and Junior Youth Week. There were 60+ adult and teen volunteers who made the week happen from set-up to clean-up. It was a great celebration of faith sharing as we all learned about the great love Jesus shares for us as He leads us to God the Father. The parish extends its gratitude to all who took part in this great intergenerational faith-sharing from our children to our youth and to our parents and grandparents. SJN PICTURE DIRECTORY The parish office is starting to receive the complimentary 8x10 photos that were taken in May. They are on the table by the donation center in alphabetical order.
