Lose Weight, More Exercise, Eat Better? While all good, they sound like the same old, same old. I challenge you to a very unique New Year s resolution bring a minimum of two guests this year. It s easy. You can achieve it since you have all the tools needed: you believe in CCS, you are passionate about singing, and you are excited about the direction CCS is going! Be willing to embrace the opportunity when it presents itself. For instance, when having a casual conversation with someone you know or even a stranger, compliment them on their voice. You could say something like, You have a great bass voice. Where do you sing? They could say, I don t. You then say in a surprised voice, Really? The conversation will naturally lead itself to the fact that you are in Indy s best kept secret, Circle City Sound Barbershop Chorus. Of course if you are wearing one of the stylish CCS tee shirts, they will probably already have an idea that you are musically talented! And at that point, you are the expert! I guarantee that the more you do it, the easier it will become to do, and it will get smoother and more natural. Help others hear the music from your passion and excitement! THE BEAT Page 5 Leadership Academy 2017 by Craig Johnson, VP PR and Marketing, District Director of CSLT In May, I accepted an invitation to be the Director of Chapter Support and Leadership Training for the Cardinal District because I had tremendous opportunities to participate in Leadership Academies early on in my barbershop experience. The number of people across the district that I had the opportunity to connect with, sing tags with, and learn from was truly impactful. Many of those relationships, seven years and a new district later, are still prevalent in my barbershop life. On Saturday, January 14th, the Cardinal District will convene for the 2017 Leadership Academy. For the first time, it will be open to any member of the district. Several members of our own chapter will be there, and I hope you'll be there, too. Registration is on Eventbrite through 5:00 pm, Thursday, January 12th. THE BEAT Page 8 The Songs We Sing: The Heather on the Hill from Wikipedia Brigadoon is a musical with lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner and music by Frederick Loewe. Songs from the musical, such as Almost Like Being in Love and The Heather on the Hill, have become standards. The story involves two American tourists who stumble upon Brigadoon, a mysterious Scottish village that appears for only one day every 100 years. Tommy, one of the tourists, falls in love with Fiona, a young woman from Brigadoon. The original production opened on Broadway in 1947 and ran for 581 performances. It starred David Brooks, Marion Bell, Pamela Britton, and Lee Sullivan. In 1949, Brigadoon opened at the West End in London and ran for 685 performances, and many revivals followed. A 1954 film version starred Gene Kelly and Cyd Charisse, and a 1966 television version starred Robert Goulet and Peter Falk. Cover versions of The Heather on the Hill have been recorded by Gene Kelly, Andy Williams, the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, and the Hi-Lo s, to name a few. In 2012, Barbra Streisand released a medley which paired this song with How Are Things in Glocca Morra? from Finian s Rainbow. 1/1 David Sanders 1/22 Jeff Boyd 1/7 Randy Freeman 1/23 James Woodruff 1/7 Sonny Griffith 1/26 Gary Sicard 1/7 Phil Griggs 1/27 David Hiner 1/12 Rich Treptow 1/30 Phil Fletcher Chapter statistics as of January 1, 2017 Chapter members: 120 Average member age: 54 Average years of service: 18 Number of active chorus members: 74 (62%)
