A Great Heritage A Great Future Dan D. Lines By Dr. Dan Darby Come and Celebrate Valentine s Day and Ash Wednesday with us on February 14 th! To celebrate this special day, we are hosting a concert with Stephanie Dawn and Dawn of Hope Ministries. She will be accompanied by Pianist, Arranger, and Step-Dad, Dann Thornton. Blind since birth, Stephanie is now in her 30 s, and has been presenting concerts since the age of nine. Her musical accomplishments include winner of the Young Soloist Award sponsored by Panasonic and Very Special Arts which resulted in performances at the Kennedy Center, and female category winner in the National New Artist Search. She made national television appearances on NBC and the Family Channel where she was a finalist and the female-category winner in the 1995 National New Artist Search on "The 700 Club." Also, Embassy Music of Nashville awarded Stephanie Dawn the Grand Prize in their Ultimate Talent Search. The concert will combine Stephanie s powerful testimony, engaging voice, and exuberant personality into a captivating and uplifting program that draws the listener closer to God. Her enthusiastic love for Jesus lifts her above the many challenges she faces in addition to her blindness. This love is inspiring to others facing challenges in their own lives. The concert will be a great way to celebrate St. Valentine s Day and to observe Ash Wednesday at the same time. Included in the concert will be a time to receive the imposition of Ashes by Pastor Dan Darby for those who wish to participate. The concert will be on Wednesday, February 14 th, 7:00 until about 8:00 p.m. It will be held in the Fellowship Hall of Coldspring United Methodist Church, 1 Cemetery Road, in Coldspring. This will be a free concert and a love offering will be received for those who wish to support the ministry of Dawn of Hope. For more information, call 936/653-2287.

UNITED METHODIST MEN The United Methodist Men held its monthly meeting on January 10 with 26 members and guest in attendance. Pastor Dan gave the opening prayer. Breakfast was served, and the cooks were thanked for a wonderful meal. Gene Pavey gave the treasurer s report. Jon Webb gave the Scout report noting that the Pinewood Derby will be held at the end of this month and invited all to attend. Prayer concerns included Larry Roberts for his upcoming surgery, Molly Langston for an upcoming surgery, Jerry Nowlin s grandson who is in the hospital and Phyliss Palmer s sister. The speaker was Melissa Hinton who started off by offering suggestions on how to include more people into the Methodist Men s organization. Her suggestions were well taken. Melissa s message was on kindness. She shared some of her life experiences on how people have shown her acts of kindness. Her message was Kindness Is Love In Action. Pastor Dan closed the meeting with a prayer. The speaker for February will be a representative from The Voice of The Martyrs. The next meeting will be on February 14. Bring your Valentine sweetheart. Hope to see you there. Robert H. Trapp-President UMM IN WORSHIP On February 4, we will celebrate Holy Communion in our worship services. Our Scripture reading for the day is Mark 1:29-39, which includes the story of the healing of Simon Peter s mother-in-law, following which she began to serve Jesus and his disciples. My sermon title will be Serving from the Heart. February 11 is Transfiguration Sunday and is the last Sunday of the Epiphany season. We will read the story of the Transfiguration from Mark 9:2-9. My sermon title will be A Glimpse of Glory. Feb. 11 is also Scout Sunday, and our Scouts will assist in the service and serve us with a spaghetti lunch at noon as one of their fund-raising projects. The season of Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, which is also St. Valentine s Day, Feb. 14 th. Since we have the United Methodist Men s Breakfast that morning we will not try to have drive-by ashes as we have done in the past. Our evening Ash Wednesday Service will something you can take a date to the Dawn of Hope Concert described on page one. Lenten series will be Listen, which will focus on the art of prayer. The following will be our themes: February 18 - Finding Your Cave: Listening Spaces. Our scripture reading will be from I Kings 19, the story of Elijah listening for the voice of God in the cave. February 25 - Finding Your Breath: Listening to our Bodies. Our scripture reading will be from the latter half of Romans 8. March 4 - Finding a Word: Listening to the Texts. Proverbs 1: 20-23 talks about the wisdom of listening to the word of God. March 11 - Finding Your Power: Listening for Healing. Mark 5: 24-34 includes the story of the woman healed from the issue of blood, a powerful story of the power of prayer. March 18 - Finding Your Mystic: Listening Beyond the Voices, We will look at Romans 12:1-12. As we still the noise in our minds, we are enabled to get in touch with the mystical presence of God. March 25 - Finding Your Purpose: Listening to Your Heart, We will read the story of Jesus praying in the Garden immediately prior to his arrest. I won t be preaching that day because the choir will be presenting their cantata, What Love Is This? Suffering Servant- Conquering King. As usual on canata Sundays, we will have one service at 11:00 a.m. in the Fellowship Hall. We will announce our plans for Maundy Thursday and Good Friday in next month s newsletter.

UMYF- The Matches Igniting the flame of Christ in everyone As we go into this New Year, I have a lot to be thinking on. I learned some interesting things at Perkins School of Youth Ministry, like building relationships. I hope to share them throughout the year. Nine of the youth went to help the mission team at UMCOR on January 20 th. They really enjoyed it and didn t want to leave. Coming up in February: We will have a special treat on Valentine s Day. Stephanie Dawn, inspirational speaker and singer will be performing for us. We will also start our prayer cards for the Lenten season (more information to follow). Carri Clark Assistant Youth Director Coldspring United Methodist Church Psalm 104:4 He makes his messengers winds, his minister a flaming fire.

February has been for centuries known to be the month we celebrate love. Legend has it that it was named after St. Valentine that went against Roman authorities marrying soldiers when the emperor Claudius II made it illegal. Others say Valentine s Day came about celebrating the courtship of birds during the month of February. The earliest love poem written still in existence today was written by Charles, Duke of Orleans, to his wife in England in 1415. We do know that as early as 1840 in America, cards decorated with lace and ribbons were being produced and sold to the public. Ever since then, America, as well as other countries, became enthralled with Valentine s Day, and it seems to be getting more popular every year! But, what is love? Usually, Valentine s Day is reserved for romantic love or eros from the Greek language. However, sometimes we send our family cards too, which is philos, like the love of a family member or your best friend. However, agape love is not based on any circumstances or feelings. It is unconditional love, acted upon on a regular basis, with no expectation of love in return. Love in action, agape love is how God loves each one of us, and it is how He wants us to love one another. This kind of love requires sacrifice from us like putting aside our feelings all the time and loving others when we don t expect anything in return. Jesus showed us true agape love by sacrificing His life for us. Ash Wednesday falls on Valentine s Day this year! What a perfect time to begin the Lent season where we can turn around our lives and focus on Jesus, the true example of love! King s Kidz will be beginning our study of the unit Who Then is This during Sunday School in February. We will be exploring witnesses of Jesus walking on water, the faith of four friends, Jesus calming the storm, and Jarius s daughter. Don t miss any fantastic adventures with the Deep Blue Kids! February sessions on Wednesday evenings with the King s Kidz will complete our The Bible: Lights, Camera, Action series Our sessions for the coming weeks will lead us to the cross in preparation for Lent and Easter. King s Kidz will be traveling Sunday, February 25 th at 1 p.m. from the church to Conroe for skating. We will eat at church before we leave. Cost is $7, and a signed permission slip is required. Snacks are extra. Lisa Lewis, Children s Ministry Coordinator

CUB SCOUT PACK 845 & BOY SCOUT TROOP 845 We hope everyone enjoyed their Christmas holidays and the unexpected snow days. All our scouts are working hard to earn their Adventure Loops and Badges of rank. The Arrow of Light Den is working especially hard to prepare for their induction into the Boy Scout Troop. It has been so great watching each scout grow and accomplish so much. We are still looking forward to our Pinewood Derby race. Be on the lookout next month for all the racing and awards results. On February 17 all are invited to our annual Blue and Gold Banquet to celebrate not only our scouts but the entire scout organization. We will enjoy a meal together followed by the popular Feller s Cake Auction. Our theme this year is 'Cubs of the Wild West'. We can t wait to see how creative our Feller s will be in all their cake designs.
