Even in the temple itself, the children cried out the royal acclamation Hosanna, which had not been heard since the end of the Macchabean monarchy over a century before. The authorities were terrified; if the Roman governor were to take this as a challenge, which he might have done, blood would flow in the streets. (Continued on page10)

The traditional Gift of Love, Дар Любов envelope found in your envelope box set (also convenience envelops in the church pew pocket), may be used at Easter time for your parish priest who then shares with Metropolitan Lawrence. You may take the opportunity to use this envelop and drop it into the second collection at the Resurrection liturgy on Easter Sunday. No tax receipt is issued for this gift. Jeremiah 31:33 What does it mean to be God s people? It means we recognize that everything we have and everything we are belongs to God. We aren t owners of anything, we are merely stewards of the gifts God has given us. It means we are willing to use our gifts and our lives to care for our neighbors and the world, just as God cares for us YOUR PRAYERS PLEASE! ПРОСИМО МОЛИТВУ ЗА ЗДОРОВЯ - Please remember in your prayers those people of our parish who are in the hospitals, care homes and those who are shut-ins, as well as those who need our prayers. Remember, if you would like a hospital visit or to have your name published in the bulletin, you or a member of your family must call the parish office and let us know. Why do some refer to Easter as Easter and others use Lent or Pentecost and what is the significance of each? In the Catholic Church, the year is divided into liturgical seasons based on significant events in the life and earthly ministry of Jesus Christ as well as the great Mysteries of our Faith. The Church Year, as it is called, begins on September 1st - which happened to be the beginning of the administrative year in the Byzantine Empire. The next liturgical season starts with Advent, which is celebrated as four weeks of preparation before Christmas. Catholics are called to live liturgically by actually entering into the Church year. Such an approach to life and worship is not simply about re-enacting the great events of Salvation history or what is called the Paschal Mystery, the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Rather, it is an invitation to all the baptized, living their lives now in the Church which is the Body of Christ and thus to enter into the deeper meaning of our faith; to experience our Salvation as an ongoing process as we cooperate with grace and allow the Holy Spirit, the same Spirit which raised Jesus from the dead, to change us from within making us more like Him. Easter, where we celebrate the resurrection of Christ, is preceded by Lent, a season of self -examination, fasting and penance in preparation for our Easter Day observance. So Lent is a 40 period prior to Easter Day. Also, beginning the Sunday before Easter we have Holy Week, beginning with Palm Sunday (sometimes called Passion Sunday), Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday. Easter Day actually begins on Saturday night with the Easter Vigil. The celebration of the Vigil is in keeping with the Jewish tradition of celebrating the day from sundown to sundown. Easter is also a season that lasts 50 days and ends on Pentecost Sunday, which is an observance based on the second chapter of the Book of Acts where the Holy Spirit came down upon the apostles. This day is considered the birthday of the Church. It is a particular custom in the Eastern Church (during the 40 days following Easter) to abstain from kneeling. Kneeling is a sign of humility and often associated with seeking forgiveness and reconciliation. Because of Jesus triumph over sin, death and evil on Easter Sunday - The Church stands reconciled and justified with Christ before God the Father. Hence the reason why we stand with Christ. We resume kneeling with the humble Kneeling Prayers that are proclaimed before the beginning of the Divine Liturgy on the Feast of Pentecost.

(Continued from page 1) This royal entry was necessary; Jesus Christ had to fulfill the Messianic prophecies which we read at Vespers on the evening of Palm Sunday. The ruler s staff belongs to Christ the King, and He came to claim it, riding on the colt of a donkey. The King of Israel had come again to Jerusalem, bringing victory, but it was to be a different sort of victory from what the Jewish people were expecting. Christ the King was simultaneously triumphant and victorious, but riding on the colt of a donkey. Divine royalty is humble; divine humility is regal. After the Divine Lioturgy, the bishop or the priest blesses the pussy willow branches, and distributes them to all the clergy and faithful. We should take the branches to our homes, where we keep them with the Cross and the holy icons. What do these branches mean? By accepting the blessed branch on Palm Sunday, we proclaim anew our primary allegiance to Jesus Christ our King. The blessed branch is like a flag for the Kingship of Jesus Christ. We acknowledge that Christ is our King, and that His Law, the Law of the Holy Gospel, comes first in our hearts and in our lives. And we keep the blessed branch in our home all year round, as a reminder of the loyalty we owe to Christ our King, and to the Gospel. This is a matter of the utmost seriousness. Our prayer, fasting, and repentance during Lent should have brought us to realize that the Lord wants to reign in every aspect of our lives. Accepting the branch means accepting the royal authority of Jesus Christ in everything. We cannot promise to succeed, but we dare not take the blessed branch if we are not at least willing to try. By all means take the branch joyfully; the Kingdom of God is very joyful! But take it seriously too, and as you see it through the year remember what it stands for. Attention Brother Knights! We hope you have you sold your ICCD Book of Tickets if not you have time. All tickets must be returned by April 5th, 2015. The Major Draw is coming up. Please return them preferably SOLD Return the tickets to: Bill Woroschuk - ICCD Chairperson or Zenon Scraba - Grand Knight. You might have a winning ticket!! Bishop Basil Losten LAST SUNDAY TO DONATE 40 CANS FOR LENT During this Lenten Season, we hope to make a positive presence and help two Catholic charities. The Missionary Sisters of Charity who operate a Soup Kitchen and Welcome Home who are trying to establish a food bank to help those they minister to. We are inviting all our parishioners to participate in a new project called 40 Cans for Lent and be mindful of those who are not as fortunate as ourselves by assisting these two Catholic ministries right here in Winnipeg. The goal is for each parishioner or parish family to contribute one can of food per day during the forty days of Lent.
