SUMMER 2017 NEWSLETTER We all want to be heard. But do we know how to respectfully listen? We all have something to say. But are the words affirming the dignity of yourself and others? 2017-2018 Theme Retreats SACRED LISTENING & SPEAKING September 15-17, 2017 Men & Women November 10-12, 2017 Men & Women March 23-25, 2018 (Palm Sunday Weekend) Women Only FIND OUT MORE ABOUT THESE RETREATS ON P. 3 Retreat with the Psalms August 18-20, 2017 Cost: $200 The Psalms: Our Response to God From their beginnings, the psalms have played a central role in the devotional lives of believers. Many of them originated in situations of prayer and they probably formed a significant part of personal and communal prayer. This workshop will look at different kinds of psalms as well as the religious themes and sentiments that they contain. It will also suggest ways of interpreting these themes for today. DIANNE BERGANT, CSA Sister Dianne is Carroll Stuhlmueller, CP Distinguished Professor Emerita of Biblical Studies at Catholic Theological Union in Chicago. For more than 25 years she has been the Old Testament book reviewer of The Bible Today. She is currently working in the areas of biblical interpretation and biblical theology, particularly issues of peace and ecology.

2 Smart phones, too! CONTEMPLATIVE PHOTOGRAPHY July 14-16, 2017 Cost: $185 This semi-silent retreat is offered for beginning to advanced photographers. Only a simple digital camera is needed. The retreat explores traditional and contemporary contemplative practices, insights and perceptions, emphasizing the Christian spiritual experience. These practices may be wellsprings for engendering a personal aesthetic in the photographic medium and also relate to many other ways of our individually being with God while being in the world. Participants are invited to journey on a path toward the still center within, seeking new awareness, authenticity and creative expression. St. Anthony s and its surrounding landscape offer a rich environment for the mingling of photography and contemplation. Presented by enthusiastic photographer Chuck Schaffer of Arbor Vitae, Wisconsin. AA/AL-ANON SERENITY RETREAT PRAY IT FORWARD (PROMISES) July 28-30, 2017 Cost: $185 Summer is the time when we surely witness the fruits of the earth in all their splendor. This is a wonderful time in which to reflect on the fruits of working our programs faithfully. These fruits are the fulfillment of the promises, which materialize as we work for them. During this retreat we will look at some of the promises, see their connection with the Bible, and learn how we can pray it forward. Presented by Sister Elise Cholewinski, a member of the community of the Sisters of St. Francis of the Holy Cross. She has a master s degree in religious education from Loyola University in Chicago, and was trained in spiritual direction at the Norbertine Center for Spirituality in De Pere, Wisconsin. She does spiritual direction and regularly does retreat work, including Twelve Step retreats. SAINT CLARE: HEALER AND ENCOURAGER Friday, August 11, 2017 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Cost: $45 A day to celebrate the life of Saint Clare and the various ways she brought healing and gave encouragement to many persons. She herself was encouraged in her generosity as a young girl in a household where women of nobility gathered. Her determination to live a Gospel lifestyle continued until her death, even during her 29 years of being bed-ridden. Stories of her gift of healing as well as her letters to Saint Agnes reveal a life of deep spirituality. Presented by Sister Jolynn Brehm, FSPA. SUPPORTING A HEALTHY SPIRITUALITY WHILE LIVING WITH CHRONIC ILLNESS OR PAIN Saturday, August 19, 2017 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Cost: $45 Chronic illness not only affects our physical bodies but it also takes its toll on the spiritual life. Gentle care of the spirit is a vital part of wellness. This one-day retreat is specifically for men and women with any kind of chronic pain or illness (cancer, heart disease, kidney or liver disease, Parkinson s, etc.). You will be offered suggestions and given an opportunity to explore and experience simple ways to comfort and care for your physical and spiritual self. 3 SACRED LISTENING & SACRED SPEAKING We all want to be heard. But do we know how to respectfully listen? We all have something to say. But are the words affirming the dignity of yourself and others? These silent weekend retreats will explore Sacred Listening and Speaking. As a retreatant, you will soak up new insights and reflections that will transform your relationships and bring new perspective to how you view society and your own potential. With both Biblical and contemplative experiences throughout the weekends, the theme will unfold in a setting full of inspiration, quiet, and natural beauty through the historical building and wooded grounds of St. Anthony s.
