Missions Collections in August We are grateful to Fr. Damian for his presence here at St. Bartholomew s this summer. He has been a wonderful addition to our parish. He will continue to be with us through the end of August. As has been customary in this parish, a special collection will be taken up before Fr. Damian s departure to assist him and the mission of the SMA Fathers in Africa. This collection will be taken up on the weekend of August 19th & 20th. Each year, every parish in the Archdiocese also hosts a guest preacher, and takes up a collection for, the Society of the Propagation of the Faith of the Archdiocese of Boston. This is the branch of the Archdiocese that promotes the missionary spirit of the Church throughout the world. This year St. Bartholomew will host Fr. Pat McGillicuddy, C.Ss.R., a Redemptorist priest serving in the metropolitan area of Curitiba, Brazil. Father McGillicuddy is the founder of Projecto Perpétua Socorro (Perpetual Help Project) which addresses the plight of young adults living in the streets. The collection for the Socity of the Propagation of the Faith will be taken up on the weekend of August 26th and 27th when Father McGillicuddy will be here and will preach at all the Masses. Holy Day Mass Schedule Tuesday, August 15th is the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and is a Holy Day of Obligation. Our Mass times for the Solemnity will be Tuesday, August 14th at 4:00 PM and Wednesday, August 15th at 9:00 AM and 6:30 PM. STEWARDSHIP: A WAY OF LIFE Sharing: Time Talent Treasure THE WORD OF THE LORD How many words of the Lord do we know? And how do these words influence our daily lives? If you are an oldie, you probably remember memorizing the Baltimore Catechism. Today s learning experiences are different. But the message cannot and does not change. Every time we attend a Mass, we hear the word of the Lord. But how long do these words stay with us? If we don t remember these words, we cannot live by them as Jesus wishes us to do. No one can know the Father except through Me. And the rest of the story goes.. A new Pastor arrived in the church community. And he was overwhelmed by all the work he found in front of him. So he delivered his first homily without his usual preparation. By the next Sunday he had found no time to prepare another homily. And so he repeated the homily from the first week. And so on the third Sunday, he repeated it again. Noticing this, several parishioners were very upset and made an appointment with the local Bishop. In the meeting, they told the story of this new Pastor who kept giving the same homily week after week. The Bishop then asked them, What was the Gospel about on these three weeks? No response. And what was the Pastor s homily about? No response. Sitting back in his chair, the Bishop suggested that maybe the Pastor ought to give his homily one more week. Opinions and judgements are easy to have. Most of us have heard these God words since we were very young. And oh how easy it is to make a comment or think an opinion on how these words should be delivered to us. Don t judge a book by its cover. How many of us have read THE BOOK? We need to listen, process, and love the words Jesus gave us. And then we should live them. And we should be grateful for the ability to hear, read, speak, any of our God given lessons with a focus that concentrates on the words and not all the distractions that we can fall victim too. Just focus briefly on the concept of not having a priest so readily available. Mass only once a month or two. We need the words of Lord constantly. Otherwise, we might really begin to believe that we don t need any help. We are capable of all our decisions. We can do it ourselves. We know all we need to know about life and how to live it. Really???? Stewardship Questions: Kathy Reilly 781-444-0862 email: kreilly15@yahoo.com If anyone needs a ride to a church service or wishes a home or Communion visit, please contact me.
