י ב ניסן תשע ז שבת פרשת צו שבת הגדול 5777 BJSZ Bulletin April 8, 2017 12 Nissan PARSHA QUESTION OF THE WEEK Bnai Jacob Shaarei Zion Good Shabbos! CONFRONTING THE EGYPTIANS חג כשר ושמח! The Tosafists (Shabbos 87b) explained that the designation of the Shabbos preceding Pesach as Shabbos Hagadol is in commemoration of the first Pesach in Egypt. Then, on the Shabbos preceding their Exodus, the Jews set aside their lambs for the Paschal offering. This was highly dangerous as lambs were objects of worship of the Egyptians, yet the Egyptians were miraculously rendered helpless and unable to effectively respond. There were a number of times during the plagues that Pharaoh suggested the Jews leave under different conditions than Moshe had demanded. For instance, in chapter 10 Pharaoh first suggested that only the adults go, and then again suggests that while all the people may go, the livestock must stay behind. Moshe refused both offers, insisting on a wholesale Exodus. In this issue, Moshe ultimately prevailed. Yet in chapter 8, Pharaoh suggested to Moshe that the Jews should stay in the land and serve G-d there, to which Moshe responded (v. 22), "It is inappropriate for us to do this, for we sacrifice the gods of Egypt to our G-d; should we sacrifice their gods before their eyes and not expect them to stone us?!" Ultimately, the Jews did sacrifice the Egyptians' gods in their land, before their eyes, and they did not stone them, hence Shabbos Hagadol. Why then does Moshe originally object on these grounds to Pharaoh? Is this a false or a real objection? HALACHA OF THE WEEK: A FEATURE OF THE BJSZ DAILY HALACHA BEDIKAS CHAMETZ THE PROPER LIGHTING The search for Chametz is supposed to be conducted by candlelight. This was instituted as the most effective way to examine the corners and crevices of our homes to ensure that they are Chametz free. While it is acknowledged that a sunroom with complete exposure to daylight could effectively be checked by daylight, most other rooms did not have such an exposure to light. As such, the entire search is to be conducted in the evening, when the candlelight is most effective. The Shulchan Aruch (433:2) rules that one should use a single wax candle, as this would be the most easily manipulable in corners and crevices without fear of dripping oil or flaring flame. In this the authorities were not only concerned with the simple effectiveness of the flame, but also with the individual s ability to focus single-mindedly on the search without being distracted by concerns about fire safety. Nowadays however, even a wax candle can prove a great distraction from the work of searching. As such it is appropriate to use overhead lights for checking the room generally, and flashlights (with overhead lights off, for contrast), to search corners and crevices. It is still appropriate to begin the search with a wax candle in hand, for the sake of tradition and for various mystical reasons (Note that the Hebrew word for wax is Shaava, very similar to the word Shaavasam, the term used for describing the cries of the Jewish People in Egypt Sefer Chukas HaPesach).
