Fifth Sunday of Lent March 13, 2016 Join Us for Mass: Mon-Fri 10 am Sat 8 am & 5 pm website: www.saintmark-mn.org 2001 Dayton Ave - Saint Paul, MN 55104 Sunday 9 am & 11 am email: parishcenter@saintmark-mn.org 651-645-5717 One Strong Family United in Christ Death to Sin & Life to the Sinner A Strong Family Story Meet Our RCIA Let's take a look at how the enemies of the Lord test Jesus. The scribes and We would like to Pharisees bring Him a women caught in adultery. Placing her in their introduce our midst they say, Moses commanded us to stone such women. So what Candidates and do you say? [Jn 8: 5] They were trying to accuse our Lord. But if we pay close Catechumens who attention accuse Him of what? Has Jesus been caught in a crime? What is the have been members of meaning of the words, They said this to test him, so that they could have some our RCIA-Encounter charge to bring against him? Jesus group this year. Stop by to say hello to them after Mass, and please The Meekness of Jesus pray for them as they move toward Here we see how profound Jesus is in His meekness. His enemies end up noticing becoming Catholic at the Easter Vigil! how sweet and humble He is. It was prophesied about our Lord, You are the most handsome of men; fair speech has graced your lips, for God has blessed you forever. Gird your sword upon your hip, mighty warrior! In splendor and majesty ride on triumphant! In the cause of truth, meekness, and justice may your right hand show Hi my name is Matt Anderson and your wondrous deeds. [Ps 45: 3-5] He brought truth as a good teacher, meekness as I m married to Allie. We live in a liberator and justice as a just judge. This is why Isaiah prophesied, The spirit of the Minneapolis and I m a case manager Lord shall rest upon him: a spirit of wisdom and of understanding, a spirit of counsel for people with disabilities. Allie is and of strength, a spirit of knowledge and of fear of the Lord. [Is 11: 2] in graduate school, studying pharmacology at the U of M. We His enemies were consumed by hatred and envy. They plotted to find something met in high school and got married they could use to attack Him with, and they chose justice. The Law said that in August of 2015 at Our Lady of adulterous women should be stoned to death, and the Law could not command Lourdes. The best memory from our something that was unjust. If Jesus said something to oppose the Law, He would be wedding was when the doors considered unjust. His enemies are scheming. Everyone knows that Jesus is a friend opened and Allie walked through. I Continued on Page 2 was so happy. She looked so beautiful - it was truly amazing! Fr. Humberto Palomino, P.E.S. Although I was brought up Lutheran, I wasn't really involved in the church. Now being an adult, it's easier to see what Continued on Page 3 All God s children are welcome to this sacred place and liturgy. The Catholic understanding of Holy Communion as the very Body and Blood of Jesus Christ limits the reception of the Holy Eucharist to those who share our faith and are united in discipleship within the life of the Church. Our brothers and sisters of other faiths are invited to come forward to receive a blessing at this time. Please indicate the desire to do so by crossing arms over the chest.

Page 2 March 13, 2016 Spiritually Speaking - continued from page 1 of truth and it seems that He is filled with meekness. They decide to bring Him a woman caught in adultery and remind Him about what is written in the Law about her. If He orders that she be stoned, He will lose His meekness in the eyes of all. If He accepts that she should be absolved, He won't appear just in their eyes. The scribes and Pharisees are just looking to condemn Jesus. But really? Who is against whom? Depravity against honesty, falsehood against truth, a perverted heart against a pure and straight heart, gross stupidity and crassness against wisdom. Their nonsensical reasoning has become their own trap. Let's take a look at the response of our Lord, which saves both justice and meekness. It wasn't, Let s not stone her or Let s stone her Instead, His response is filled with justice, mercy and truth. He says, Let the one among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her. [Jn 8: 7] What an answer It helped them to come into themselves! The scribes and Pharisees had gotten so used to judging others that they hadn t examined themselves. They were too hard with the woman, but very soft on themselves. Each One Look at Their Own Heart Is it fair that the punishment prescribed by the Law be executed by those who should also be punished? If each one of them goes to the tribunal of their own heart and conscience, they will feel obligated to find themselves guilty. Wounded by their guilt and torn by the words of our Lord, they look at each other and start to escape one by one. In the end there are only two left the miserable one and the merciful one. The one who frightened His enemies with words of justice now looks intently at the woman and asks with meekness, Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you? No one, sir, she replies, and Jesus says, Neither do I condemn you. What is this? Is he promoting sin? Clearly not pay close attention to His words: Go, and from now on do not sin any more. [Jn 8: 10-11] Our Lord gives the sentence of condemnation only against sin, not against people. The problem we all have is not necessarily how to deal with sin, but rather how to deal with the sinner. Jesus knows very well how to deal with and heal the sinner. And because we are all sinners, my brothers and sisters of St Mark, He knows how to deal with us. In Him, we see the psalms fulfilled. He is the one who pardons all your sins, and heals all your ills He can separate the sinner from their sin. He can look at us without paying attention to our miseries, once we give them to His merciful heart. As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our sin from us. Page 3 Zach Zeckser School News - Principally Speaking On the day that I write this, I had a phone call with a representative from the National Schools of Character staff at Character.org. They are currently deliberating if St Mark's Catholic School is not only a State School of Character (the only one in Minnesota this year) but if we also deserve to be recognized as one of this year's few nationally recognized schools. It is truly a pleasure and an honor to work alongside the faculty and staff that make this school such an incredible blessing to each of its children. They work incredibly hard and possess a distinct expertise. Of particular note, they are developing their masterful knowledge of the child brain and coupling this with the formation of Top 20 Training. The result is unbelievable. Please come visit the school and witness what I get to observe every day as I walk our hallowed halls. Grand Olde St Mark s Days May 20 & 21 The fun will be waiting for you! We hope you will take several of the postcards located in the pews and at the back of Church and invite your neighbors and friends to join us for Holy Week. Here s your chance to reach out and share the Gospel message with those who are searching for love. Allow your faith to be transformed! Fifth Sunday of Lent Strong Family Story - continued from page 1 I want, and taking this journey of faith is more than I could have imagined. My relationship with Jesus is always a work in progress. In the past I would start to build a relationship with Jesus and then would leave; but he always calls me back. I currently encounter Jesus weekly when I attend RCIA. It brings me closer to him. How did we find St Mark s? I looked online for churches near us and I came upon St Marks. It looked very welcoming and we starting attending Mass in October. So we chose you guys! I m an RCIA Candidate and attend sessions which help me understand the Catholic faith. It has become a part of my life, and when we took a recent break, I really felt I was missing something. I am thankful for all that my RCIA team and sponsor, Nelson Rhodus, are doing for me. I look forward to being confirmed at the Easter Vigil! ~ Matt Anderson Spring Luncheon & Silent Auction April 2 Bloom Where You re Planted Look for all the details in your invitation regarding the auction, luncheon and presentation on Small Space Gardening!
