All Things Possible As we begin a new calendar year, the tradition of New Year resolutions comes to mind. Often these resolutions are initiated with energetic commitment; more of this, less of that. But the pressure of our habits and nature often begin their relentless push and nudge until we find ourselves drifting right back to where we were before the resolution was made. Behaviorists teach that habits have two components by which they are driven; antecedents and consequences. The antecedents happen before the behavior and trigger the brain to consider if the consequences of doing a particular thing will be positive or negative. This Christmas season, my two year old grandson Andrew could not resist the ornaments on the Christmas tree. Beautiful, sparking and shiny, the ornaments had qualities that served as powerful antecedents. Repeatedly, Andrew was led to the behaviors of grabbing, poking, removing and repositioning. Great fun when you re two because of all the positive consequences such as texture, color, lighting, reflections and even the occasional smashing on the floor. Andrew s parents provided some negative consequences with gentle scolding, but Andrew would simply wait for the next opportunity when no one was paying complete attention, and yet another ornament would bite the dust. There arrived a particular moment when Andrew was pursuing a special ornament high on the tree. He lost his balance, fell head first into the tree and got stuck. His arms flapping wildly, Andrew desperately tried to repel himself into reverse. Failing, he cried until Mommy fished him out, leaving an Andrew-sized hole in the greenery. This negative consequence motivated a change, albeit only for a while. It is the consequences rather than the antecedents that provide the power to the engine of habit. And the immediate consequence is more powerful than any that may be distant. For example, food, alcohol, cigarettes and drugs are all consumable products with powerful, immediate consequences. While there are plenty of antecedents, such as nutritional labels, dietary warnings, toxicity warnings, health warnings, etc., they are weakly affective relative to the consequences. Distant consequences such as adverse health effects prove to be weak due to proximity that appears far away. So, are we trapped like animals in the cage of behavioral antecedents and consequences? No, because the behaviorists do not recognize a more powerful influence altogether; God. Recall the scene with Jesus and His disciples as they were approached by the rich man who recites his credentials as a good man worthy to follow Jesus. Jesus tells the rich man to give all he has to the poor and, Follow me. The rich man is unable to give up his wealth; his store-house of positive, immediate consequences. And so, the rich man walks away. The disciples are astonished and ask, Who then can be saved? If this were the end of the story, it would appear that we are doomed to an overwhelming battle against the never ending influence of habits, attachments, affections and store-house of whatever positive consequences own us. But the story doesn t end here. Jesus completes the story with mercy and hope, With man this is impossible, but not with God; all things are possible with God. Even though the rich man walked away, we don t know if this was the end of the story for him either. Maybe he returned. Or maybe he spent the rest of his life in the comfort of his wealth, his head still hanging low as on the day he walked away. And perhaps he found himself at the very end lifting his head and speaking the words, Forgive me. And discovering all things are possible with God. EVANGELISM IN ACTION: Never give up. All things are possible with God. Article written by Keith Thompson. Please send your comments, thoughts and suggestions to newevangelism@gmail.com or call Keith at 772-631-2080.

When we receive Holy Communion, we are united with Jesus in the most intimate way possible here on earth. The almighty God, Creator of the universe, humbles himself so that he can become one with each of us. God is within us, within our very souls, each time we attend Mass and receive communion. Join us January 18th as we take a closer look at The Eucharist as Real Presence, Sacrifice and as Communion. Everyone is welcome, so don't forget To invite a friend or two! The sentiment A New Year, a new you is all too common. The Lord our God created us in His likeness and image and through our Baptism we became pure. It is from that image and creation we all too often stray. Upon contemplating our lives at that time we consider a change or a new self. Next time we consider a new self may we prayerfully consider the fact that we do not need a new self, but a return to the pure and perfect person God created us to be. May our hearts go back to that beautiful heart with which God created us all. A very Joyful, Blessed New Year to everyone. A CATHOLIC GUIDE TO END-OF-LIFE DECISIONS As a woman of religious conviction, Anne receives great consolation from her faith in God. She receives pastoral care from the hospital chaplains and Communion from the Eucharistic ministers. A priest has given her the Sacrament of Anointing, and should it become necessary, he is ready to administer Viaticum. In the past several weeks, however, Anne has begun to experience more pain. As her doctor performs new tests and prescribes additional medications, Anne experiences a greater degree of suffering. Pain and suffering at times may be a profoundly distressing experience that raises deep questions about the meaning of life and even the nature of God. How can a merciful God allow us to experience the suffering of illness? It should be comforting to reflect on the fact that God Himself entered into human suffering through His Son who suffered and died so that we could overcome death. Suffering and death entered the world with the sin of our first parents, but Christ's obedience to the Will of His Father can now infuse these afflictions with great redemptive power. By virtue of our being made one with Christ in Baptism, we can join our suffering to that of Our Savior on the Cross at Calvary and so assist in his work of salvation for the whole human race. Christ is with us during our illness and shares in our suffering as we share in His. For those who have lost their faith in God, the suffering and helplessness of serious illness make little sense. Some may \even come to contemplate suicide or euthanasia. Others who accept the existence of God wrongly believe that He does not care whether we shorten our lives. The testimony of Sacred Scripture and the constant teaching of the Catholic Tradition speak against ever directly intending one's own death. The Catholic, with a deep faith in Jesus Christ, may not be able to understand suffering, but he knows he can offer it up as a powerful source of grace for himself and others.
