From the Pastor At the Easter Vigil we read from Matthew s Gospel where Mary Magdalene and the other Mary go to the tomb. There they experience an earthquake whereby an Angel of the Lord rolls back the stone from the tomb and gives them the news that Jesus has risen! The first words spoken by the Angel Do not be afraid. are the same words which Jesus will offer them as they encounter him resurrected, Do not be afraid. Words which carry great power on this Easter morn. Matthew tells us that they leave the tomb both fearful and yet overjoyed. Two conflicting emotions coexisting in their persons, fear and joy. We can relate as we gather this Easter day. The world offers us both opportunity to be fearful and joyful simultaneously it seems. As we touch the places where death seems to have spoken definitively we recognize that like the two disciples in today s story we need to look at the place where he was laid and see that he is no longer there. He has moved ahead to proclaim the good news with his crucified and yet glorified body telling a different story. We as the church enter into his story which is our story. We touch the places and things which can signify death and thereby confront our fears our vulnerability. We reach for that which is beyond, that which offers hope and promises life and it is there that we find Jesus who tells us Do not be afraid. His victory is our victory. Today we gather as a community to not only hear the story but share the story and the power contained therein. We gather as a people who can feel the power of fear but also a people who wait and listen for the words Do not be afraid. We are consoled and strengthened and then sent forward to share the story and the victory. The victory of life over death, joy over fear. May the joy of Mary Magdalene and all the disciples continue to be ours. May it overcome our fear and strengthen our faith as we leave church this Easter day to proclaim in our persons the truth of our faith, that Jesus lives and we are forever changed by his love for us, ALLELUIA! Writers Needed! A while back we had a Parishioner Profile spot in the bulletin that we all enjoyed. As so often happens, folks got busy and the profiles went by the wayside. We d love to start this column back up if we can fund a few good writers in the parish who would like to create a team for this. God has blessed us in so many ways. Our parish is vibrant and faithful, filled with those longing to be better disciples of Jesus every day. As your pastoral team we continually thank God for you and for all the good you do both here in the parish and in the world around us. Your example of faithful discipleship moves us every day to want to serve you better. It takes the work of many to make the Holy days as prayerful as they are here at St Francis de Sales. To the many people who helped this week, to all who served, those who sang, staples, washed linens and statues, those who proclaimed the word, served at table, all who preached profoundly by their humble service we say thank you. As you leave church today to celebrate Easter in whatever way is your custom we invite you to remember the constant reminder of Fr Neil to us all whenever we gathered where is Jesus in all of this? Today and always we pray that Jesus will always be in your midst and guiding your way. Happy Easter! To Our Lenten Small Christian Communities : To the 70 or so parishioners who have gathered together for these past five weeks of Lent, we extend a huge THANK YOU for all your prayer and reflection. We are sure that who St Francis de Sales is as a parish community, and as a source of hope and joy in our neighborhood, has grown stronger because of your prayers. We hope that the time was fruitful for each of you. We hope that you felt our loving God drawing you closer as you pondered his word in sacred scripture. We invite you along with your group leaders to consider the possibility of continuing to meet for prayer during this Easter Season. We encourage you to speak with others about your experience so that, when we offer the time for small groups to gather again in prayer during the Advent Season, new folks will come and join us.
