Sacred Heart Parish The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph Let the peace of Christ control your hearts; let the word of Christ dwell in you richly. Today s Readings: 1st Reading - Sirach 3:2-6 2nd Reading - Colossians 3:12-21 Gospel - Matthew 2:13-15, 19-23 December 29, 2013 0132
Stewardship Corner ~ We see the importance of family life this weekend as the foundational unit in our faith evidenced by the love and humility shared between the members of the Holy Family: Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. God has given us this great example to emulate both in our church lives and in secular society. How do we live our lives by the example of the Holy Family? And what are the keys to living successfully as Catholic families in today s world? In the reading from Sirach, we hear how each member is crucial to the growth of the family as a whole. Sirach talks about honor, obedience, and justice as specific qualities necessary between family members in order to function as a cohesive and holy unit. We must see the cruciality in our family members, acknowledge it, and be thankful for each person and what they do as part of the family. Paul s letter to the Colossians tells us of five virtues found in good family members, but puts love above all as, the bond of perfection. When we live virtuously as families- according to the example set by the Holy Family with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience in our hearts- we find peace. Paul encourages us to, let the peace of Christ control [our] hearts, the peace into which [we] were also called in one body. And over all these put on love, that is, the bond of perfection. And let the peace of Christ control your hearts, the peace into which you were also called in one body. COL 3:14-15 Have you ever noticed the extreme sense of peace and calm that overcomes you when you make certain decisions? That peace comes from God; it comes to us when we let the peace of Christ control our hearts. Oftentimes with family, we find certain situations frustrating which makes it easy to lose patience with others- this does not leave us feeling at peace. On the other hand, when we act in kind and compassionate ways that encourage growth for the entire unit, we become part of that one body of Christ and experience the peace Paul alludes to. As individuals we become a family, and as families we become that one body with the larger family of Sacred Heart and the whole Catholic Church. Be conscious of your actions, your words, and your thanksgiving with your family: See how you all can grow when you let the peace of Christ control your hearts.
