It depicts the final struggle at the end of time and the subsequent resurrection to a life of horror or one of glorification. The distress is probably that final tribulation that will come to pass before the appearance of the final reign of God. Known as the birth pangs of the messiah, the agony preceded the birth of the reign of God. Daniel is told that those whose names appear in the book (the Book of Righteous) will be spared. They may have to endure the agony of the endtime, but they will escape ultimate destruction. This explanation of the unique sacrifice of Christ re-interprets as understanding of the Jewish practice of sin offering. The singular status of Jesus the priest and the inestimable value of Jesus the victim set his sacrifice apart from all others. Total and complete expiation has been accomplished through him. There is no need for Jesus to stand and offer another sacrifice. Therefore, he takes his seat next to God in glory. Jesus has decisively expiated all sin and conquered all evil. He has been able to accomplish what the sacrificial system of Israel, despite its preeminence, has been unable to achieve. Mark describes the character and appearance of the end of time through allusions to earlier apocalyptic traditions. Chief among them are the references to the tribulations that precede the advent of the new age and the coming of the Son of Man in the clouds. Cosmic occurrences will accompany the distress that will take hold of the world. The coming of the Son of Man in the clouds, an allusion to the mysterious figure found in the book of Daniel (7:13), heralds the advent of the new age. The exact time of the coming of the new age is shrouded in mystery. The lesson to be learned from all this is: Be prepared! -from Living the Word Parish Office email: churchoffice@stveronicassf.com

From the Pastor s Desk Dear Parishioners, China Calling---Beijing to Xian: In the last week s bulletin, I mentioned the highlights of my visit to Beijing---Temple of Heaven, Temple of Harvest, the Great Wall of China, Forbidden City, Olympic Stadium, Summer Palace, and Hutong District. We took an hour and a half flight to Xian, the city famous for the Terracotta Warriors as well as for industries. The city was wrapped in smog the whole day and night. The Terracotta Warriors were absolutely impressive and stunning. You don t believe it until you see it. In three different vaults, I saw thousands of life-size warriors made of clay. Completed in 210 B.C. under orders from Emperor Qin Shihuang, these clay warriors and horses were accidentally discovered only in 1974 by a farmer digging a well. In fact, I met that farmer who sits in a museum, signing books and posing for pictures. These clay warriors and horses were buried along with the emperor when he died, as a way of sending him off to the next world in full regalia, with his whole army intact in clay. The striking fact is that these over 7000 clay soldiers were made over 2200 years ago with highly sophisticated technology. The face of each warrior is unique and different from any other warrior, their armor reflecting the different ranks in the army. These clay warriors were to protect the emperor even in death and lead him safely into the realm of rest. The excavations at the site are still underway and more is yet to be unearthed. We also saw the famous Wild Goose Pagoda in Xian, built in 652 A.D. in the Tang dynasty, by Xuanzang, a traveler, translator, and monk, who took the famous Silk Road to reach India, the birthplace of Buddhism, to bring back scriptures and other religious articles enshrined in this famous Buddhist religious place. I was fascinated by the Buddhist culture in China and the closeness of two great civilizations: China and India. After seeing the impressive Ancient Wall of Xian (16 miles long built in 1370 A.D.) and attending an exquisitely presented Tang Dynasty Music and Dance Show with dinner, we were ready to fly to another famous city, Chengdu. Guess what Chengdu is famous for! My travelogue will continue! Capital Campaign: 4000 Letters Seeking Your Support: At the school Women s Guild meeting last Monday, the three coordinators of the Capital Campaign - Tammi Grigg, Terri Ciardella, and Sharon Oosterman - presented the project, asking for support and collaboration. Their presentation was very well received by the school parents who see the urgent need of repairing the grounds and paving them for the sake of the safety of their children. The parish too is appreciative of the need for this project to provide the basic safety and beauty of our parish property. Over 4000 letters have gone out in the mail to parishioners, school and Faith Formation families, alumni, and well-wishers of our parish. You may have received the mailing already with an attractive brochure and letter containing all the information you need and the various ways in which you could help. Please welcome this effort positively and consider making a generous donation. This parish belongs to each one of you! To all of us! In the true spirit of St. Veronica Parish, let s make a big success of this effort. If everyone participates, it will not be an undue burden on a few. Then we can quickly complete this project, within the next 18 months or so. I can assure you St. Veronica grounds will then be a lot safer and more beautiful place. Report Cards: I had the pleasure of giving the report cards to children of Kindergarten, grades 1, 3, 5, and 7. The principal gave the report cards to other classes. We ll switch classes next time. It s a joy for me to shake hands with each child as I give out the report card and to say a word of appreciation and encouragement. I tell them to remember that there is always room for improvement and that God gives us the energy to do more for Him and others. I remind the children that they would do well to put their heart and soul into everything they do: academics, prayer and Mass, sports, music, and extra- curricular activities. Do your best, and leave the rest to God! Simbang Gabi: Two meetings to plan our annual Simbang Gabi were held in the last two weeks. I would like to encourage everyone, especially the Filipino community, to come together for this beautiful devotional preparation for nine days before Christmas. Those organizing this event, our parishioners and the BLD community, can use all the support they can get from everyone. Please contact the parish office to let us know how you can sponsor and support Simbang Gabi. On the last day of the nine days, the Mass will be celebrated by Bishop Bob McElroy, followed by dinner. Happy Thanksgiving! "The Pilgrims made seven times more graves than huts. No Americans have been more impoverished than these who, nevertheless, set aside a day of thanksgiving." -H.U. Westermayer. Let our sense of gratitude overflow to our families, friends, and to all those struggling in life. Happy Thanksgiving! God bless America! From sea to shining sea! Your Friend and Pastor, Father Charles Puthota

It is also written that as the musicians played at her wedding she "sang in her heart to the Lord". St. Cecilia was an only child. Her feast day is celebrated in the Roman Catholic, Anglican, Eastern Orthodox, and Eastern Catholic Churches. She is one of seven women, excluding the Blessed Virgin, commemorated by name in the Canon of the Mass.
