Dr. Larry W. Leonard District Superintendent lwleonard@tnnaz.org January 2014 TAKING MINISTRY PARTNERSHIPS TO A NEW LEVEL OF SIGNIFICANCE This month of January, 2014, marks the beginning of my sixth year as your district superintendent. My heart is filled with gratitude to everyone in Tennessee who has made this a wonderful five years for God s Kingdom through the Tennessee District Church of the Nazarene. Our theme of The Power of Partnership has guided us through these years together. We have witnessed the reality that partnering with others brings added significance to the Kingdom of God. Across the district, pastors are partnering with other pastors in a mentoring relationship, and churches are partnering with one another or with NewStarts to share their strengths and to do what one church could not do alone. Many of our churches are also partnering with compassionate ministry centers, military units, and local schools. As a district we enjoy a wonderful training partnership with Trevecca Nazarene University. We have partnered with the Cuba District to provide human and financial resources to assist them in maximizing their gifts and opportunities. In turn they are providing us vision, insight, and motivation to more effectively be the Body of Christ around the globe. Once again God has opened a door for the Tennessee District to explore the possibilities of partnership for the purpose of greater missional significance than could be accomplished alone. We follow the principle of Ecclesiastes 4:9-10: Two people are better off than one, for they can help each other succeed. If one person falls, the other can reach out and help. But someone who falls alone is in real trouble (New Living Translation). Together we do what one pastor or one church or one district could not do alone. There is power in partnership. A significant step in partnership occurred on Tuesday night, December 17. At the request of the Mississippi District Advisory Board and Council, and the USA/Canada Regional Director Dr. Bob Broadbooks; I met with the Mississippi District Advisory Board and Council to begin discussion regarding the possibility of merging the Tennessee and Mississippi Districts. The Tennessee District Advisory Board and the Mississippi District Advisory Board had both previously voted unanimously to study a possible merger. The Board of General Superintendents also granted permission for the conversation to begin. The Mississippi District is currently being superintended by retired district superintendent Dr. Crawford Howe. This interim role was made necessary due to Mississippi District superintendent Dr. Greg Mason s accepting the appointment to become district superintendent of the North Carolina District Church of the Nazarene. I am releasing this information early in the process because we are a family, and our family should be informed as together we are praying about this possibility. Such a merger has the potential to strengthen both the Mississippi and Tennessee Districts. The matter of merger discussion is not one person s or one district s interest. This is a combined interest of 6 advisory board members in Mississippi, 5 ministry directors in Mississippi, and 14 advisory board members in Tennessee. The prayers of every Tennessee and Mississippi Nazarene are of the most vital importance. In January 2014, a Merger Commission will be named by our Jurisdictional General Superintendent Dr. Gustavo Crocker. For a merger to be finalized, each district s assembly would need to approve the proposition brought by the commission and the two advisory boards. You will be kept apprised of the activity of the commission on a regular basis. I will send updates to the pastors so that each member of the Tennessee District Church of the Nazarene will have information regarding the merger study. There are many questions that must be answered. However, we have the advantage of the experience of several districts that have successfully merged recently; and we will be able to benefit from their journeys. Nothing in Kingdom work is about anyone s preference. As we work together we will seek to know and to do the will of God, which is our highest goal. I bring this partnering mission to you because I have great confidence in your prayers and your support of the Tennessee District as we endeavor to impact even more effectively the mission of God in His world. Stay tuned for more exciting news.

Rev. David Hill, SDMI Chairman 403 Page Place Mt. Juliet, TN 37122 dcnaz3@comcast.net Sunday School Make the Connection People of Prayer Engaged in the Word Making Christlike Disciples Bilbo Baggins, the Hobbit who left the shire to go on a great adventure, once said: It s a dangerous business, Frodo, going out your door. You step onto the road, and if you don t keep your feet, there s no knowing where you might be swept off to. I suppose every new venture is like that; perhaps even more when we step out our door into a new year and a new challenge. Part of the newness to a new year is setting goals. It s a clean slate, a fresh start. May I suggest not trying to reach your goals in one huge step? Most of the time what we need to do is keep our feet with small steps small steps coupled with faithfulness that produce bigger results. So as you set goals this new year, perhaps challenging ones, work at it a step at a time, being faithful, and trusting the Faithful One as you go out your door. Have a great 2014 in Sunday School & Discipleship. Luke 2:30-32 The glory of Christmas is Jesus and HE IS HERE, as Simeon declared in these verses. I hope you worshiped with awe during this wonderful holiday season. As we begin 2014 I am sure the adventures in NMI will multiply as you pray, give, disciple and educate in your local churches. Try some new things and use the excellent resources available to you from our Global NMI. Make sure you let your people meet a missionary this year! We have some folks going out this year as volunteer missionaries that would love to come and speak for you. Jaclyn & Stephen Tarrant (617-721-7594; e-mail: jaclyntarrant@gmail.com) and Jade & Emman Chapman, both from Clarksville First Church are going to Australia and need to raise funds for their new assignment. Pastor Amy Murphy from Joelton is going to a Creative Access Area next month and may have a few open dates to come. Having missionaries in your church and sending folks on mission trips is the BEST MISSION EDUCATION EVER! Make it your goal each year to do both and God will bless your church. The next emphasis will be our giving of Alabaster offerings in February. to increase around the world. The real estate needs continue NMI: Nazarene Missions International On March 1 our district offers an amazing lay training day for all ministries of our church. "Improve Your Serve" should be on your personal and church calendar already! We will have three NMI workshops and dozens of others that will equip your local church in excellent ways. Also we will be collecting Crisis Care Kits that day, which will be delivered to the warehouse as a district Compassionate Ministries project. Our leader for this project is Sonya Nixon. You will be given specific instructions about this project next month. Begin now to ask your church to assemble these kits. Kids love to be involved in this project! Our December Cuba team was small but mighty. We continue to rejoice in how God has called "first timers" to join each team. Thank you, Team, for going and loving our Cuban Nazarenes.
