SAINT- SPYRIDON.ORG Remembering Metropolitan Iakovos As our 100 th anniversary draws near we can feel the excitement and the anticipation of our centennial celebration. Sadly, we will observe this momentous occasion without our spiritual shepherd, His Eminence Metropolitan Iakovos. Following a very brief illness, His Eminence fell asleep in the Lord on June 2 nd. Archbishop Demetrios, surrounded by all the hierarchs, clergy and the faithful, presided over the funeral services which concluded with the internment at the St. John Chrysostom Monastery in Wisconsin. Having served our Metropolis for thirty-eight years, for many of us he was the only bishop of Chicago we have ever known. He ordained most of the priests of this Metropolis as well as many clergy serving throughout the Archdiocese. Under his leadership our Metropolis embraced the homeless and those in need and promoted our Orthodox values in our city and throughout the Midwest. He loved and promoted our Hellenic heritage, having established the Midwest Hellenic Dance Festival as one of the last additions to the ministries of our Metropolis. Most of all, His Eminence was an excellent liturgist, teaching the clergy how to celebrate the services with order and dignity, and inspiring all of us to commit to a more intense worship life. As for our Saint Spyridon parish, His Eminence was the celebrant at the Thyranoixia in 1986, and the consecration of our church in 1996. Last year, as we kicked off our 100 th anniversary celebration he blessed our new iconography and inspired us to organize the rest of our centennial observances. He loved coming to our community s festival and social events and enjoyed the warm hospitality. He especially enjoyed tonsuring new altar boys and celebrating the Pre-Sanctified Liturgy just before Holy Week. I will personally forever be grateful to His Eminence for his love, for always listening and attending to my concerns, and for teaching me the meaning of respect, patience, humility, and devotion to our calling. As we now pray for the repose of his soul, we also pray that the Church will assign a new Metropolitan that will continue to inspire us, to lead us, to instruct us, and to celebrate with us our upcoming 100 th anniversary. May Saint Spyridon continue to intercede for us and for our sacred Metropolis. Amen. Fr. Memory Eternal Metropolitan Iakovos of Chicago NEW YORK The Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America is mourning the passing of Metropolitan Iakovos of Chicago, 89, who fell asleep in the Lord last night, June 2, 2017, at Chicago s Weiss Memorial Hospital following a short illness. His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios of America with a heavy heart and deep sorrow made the first announcement late last night on behalf of the Hoy Eparchial Synod. In accordance with article 12 of the Charter of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America Archbishop Demetrios in consultation with the Eparchial Synod named His Eminence Metropolitan Nicholas of Detroit as locum tenens, until a successor is elected. Immediately following the announcement of the passing of Metropolitan Iakovos, His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios of America stated: With the falling asleep in the Lord of the late Metropolitan Iakovos of Chicago, the Church in America has lost a prominent Hierarch, known for his great and long service to the people of God. A long friendship connected me with the departed Hierarch since the time we were both students at the School of Theology of the University of Athens following World War II. Already at that time, the unforgettable hierarch distinguished himself for his deep piety, his ecclesiastical ethos and the special love he had for the sacred services of our Orthodox liturgical tradition. Always noble in his ways, ready to listen to the problems, and the disappointments and the pain of countless people, he did not hesitate to offer plenty of time for therapeutic advice and spiritual guidance of his flock. Throughout his diakonia as Metropolitan of Chicago he was always untired and present without exception, in all the events of our Holy Archdiocese in all the meetings of the Holy Eparchial Synod and in the many Clergy-Laity Congresses. I remember especially our common diakonia as members of the Holy and Sacred Synod of our Ecumenical Patriarchate because of his prudent, well-documented and constructive interventions during long synod meetings, something that was especially recognized by the President of the Synod His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew. Metropolitan Iakovos served with faithfulness and devotion to God and His Church until the very last days of his long life despite the increased health issues he was facing lately. The high hierarchical offering of the unforgettable departed Brother Metropolitan Iakovos has been indelibly engraved in the collective memory of the Holy Archdiocese of America, which is fervently praying for the blessed repose of the soul of such a beloved and distinguished Brother Hierarch. May his memory be eternal as he rests among the just and the saints. Metropolitan Iakovos of Chicago has served the Greek Orthodox Church in America for almost 50 years. He was born in Athens in 1928 where he received his basic and high school education. He graduated from the Theological School of the University of Athens and was ordained to the diaconate and the holy priesthood. He served the church in Athens until 1954 and later pursued graduate studies in Boston, while at the same time serving as priest in the area. He was appointed Archdiocesan Vicar of the 7th Archiepiscopal District of Detroit by Archbishop Iakovos in St. Spyridon Hellenic Orthodox Church 3

Memory Eternal Metropolitan Iakovos of Chicago February 1968. One year later, in 1969, he was elected to the episcopacy by the Holy and Sacred Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate. He was consecrated Bishop of Apameia (an Auxiliary Bishop of Archbishop Iakovos) on Christmas Day of 1969, and appointed to the 7th Archiepiscopal District of Detroit as Bishop of that district. In 1971 he was appointed President of Hellenic College Holy Cross School of Theology in Brookline, Massachusetts, while remaining as administrative overseer of the Diocese of Detroit. He simultaneously served as the Bishop of the New England/Boston area during his five-year tenure as President of Hellenic College and Holy Cross School of Theology. Following the reorganization of the Archdiocesan Districts into Dioceses, Bishop Iakovos was enthroned by His Eminence Archbishop Iakovos of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of North and South America on May 1, 1979, as the Bishop of Chicago at the Annunciation Cathedral. In November 1997, the Holy Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate elected His Grace Bishop Iakovos of Chicago to the active Metropolitanate of Krinis and Exarch of Ionias. In this capacity, His Eminence continued to serve the Greek Orthodox Diocese of Chicago as its Presiding Hierarch. In December of 2002, the Holy and Sacred Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate elevated the Dioceses of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese to Metropolises of the Archdiocese and elected all of the Hierarchs of the Dioceses as Metropolitans of their respective Metropolises, thus Metropolitan Iakovos was elected Metropolitan of Chicago. The Holy Metropolis of Chicago of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America consists of 59 parishes in total, thirty-four parishes in Illinois, with another twenty-five parishes in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, northern Indiana, and eastern Missouri; as well as two monastic communities. Under his leadership of Metropolitan Iakovos, the Metropolis has increased its efforts to assist the homeless and those in need, as witnessed in the labors of the Metropolis Philanthropy Committee. He has founded new Youth programs, established various local Dialogue Commissions with other faith communities and worked with other area Religious Leaders in promoting justice and truth in our society. Various other programs of the Metropolis established by the departed Metropolitan include the Bishop Iakovos Scholarship Assistance Program; the Bishop's Task-Force on AIDS; the Metropolis Jr. Olympics; the Festival of Orthodox Books; as well as numerous programs in religion and Greek education. Archbishop Demetrios of America presided at the funeral service for Metropolitan Iakovos, Friday June 9, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. at the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary in Chicago. The Divine Liturgy preceded the funeral. The previous evening Thursday, June 8, the Archbishop chanted a Trisagion service in the Cathedral at 7:00 p.m. The internment of His Eminence took place at the St. John Chrysostom Monastery in Kenosha, Wisconsin. RESTORATION PROJECTS Thanks to generosity of our faithful, and under the leadership of Frank Kopanis and his committee, the following projects were accomplished over the months of May and June: BRICK RESTORATION 1. We restored the brickwork around the church edifice which was deteriorating due to age and moisture. The bottom eight rows and the top five or six rows at spots, were replaced. 2. The new bricks were dyed to match our existing bricks. 3. A drainage system was placed behind the bricks to keep moisture our of the walls. 4. The walls were washed with pool shock to remove dirt and mold that had accumulated over the years. 5. The limestone over the church front doors and the peak of the front wall was washed and restored. FRONT SIGN 1. The front sign of the church had completely deteriorated from moisture and the granite sign was in danger of falling. 2. A new design was made and the granite sign was made secure with new mortar and brick work, capped with limestone to keep out moisture. 3. The two light posts in the church entrance were also restored and the electrical work was made secure. The front sign restoration and much of the brick work was generously donated by one of our faithful families. The total cost to the church was limited to under $10,000 thanks to many generous donations. COMING UP ROOF REPAIRS The limestone covers on the top of the four church walls and the office building will be replaced by more weather resistant materials that will match the rest of the building. Much of the damage to the top of the walls was caused by impervious limestone caps. The cost of this project will be about $12,000. LANDSCAPING & PAVERS For the past three years the building committee has been studying the problem of the uneven pavement and drainage issues around the church which also caused some of the brick damage on the church walls. The design calls for digging up the pavers and the underlying asphalt in order to have better drainage around our church building. This project will cost around $105,000. Your assistance is needed!!! ICONOGRAPHY REPAIRS In the month of July we hope to clean the dome icons, repair the dome windows, and replace the lights inside the dome. We are also planning to replace the bottom wallpaper along the pews with a decorative design that will act as a base for our iconography. The funds in the iconography fund will cover these repairs and additions. Original Sign Monument New Design Finished Monument Sign 6 The Voice

RESTORATION PROJECTS COMING UP continued Our PTA has dedicated $15,000 to renovate our community center. A wall will be built that will encompass our stage and create a storage area on both sides of the stage. This design has been in the works for eight years, and now it is time to get it done. The PTA will also replace our basketball backboards with ones that adjust for our younger players. Finally, we have received a generous donation to repaint the community center so that it will be ready for our 100th Anniversary celebrations. P.T.A. NEWS On Friday, May 26th we celebrated our Plutarchos Greek School Graduation with a lovely program and delicious refreshments. Our sincere thanks to everyone who came together to help celebrate our children! We also wish to thank all our Greek School staff and assistants for their dedication in teaching our children the beauty of the Greek language and culture. Your commitment and diligence will have long term gains for our youth. This year s Greek School PTA Scholarship recipients were sixth grader Vasili Arvanitis and eighth grader Stephanie Malamis. Congratulations on a job well done! As the final year of the current PTA Board comes to a close, we would like to thank our parishioners, families, friends, and Saint Spyridon Community for their support. It was with everyone s loving support and cooperation that we were able to lay the groundwork needed for our new programs and events, as well as continue old traditions. Furthermore, the dedication and assistance we received from all of you with our fundraising efforts, allowed us our successes this year. I wish to thank my Board for all their hard work and support throughout it all; Yianna Halikias, Connie Papadatos, Helen Halikias, and Sofea Malamis. PHILOPTOCHOS NEWS Dear Fellow parishioners, the Philoptochos was deeply saddened on the passing of our beloved Metropolitan Iakovos. We have fond memories of his being with us through the years. We have been so fortunate for all that he had done for the Metropolis especially for the youth. St. Spyridon provided a bus for the wake on June 8 th at Annunciation Cathedral. Many attended the Divine Liturgy and funeral services on June 9 th on their own. We loved him and we will miss him. May his memory be eternal. The St. Spyridon Philoptochos had elections and we are proud to announce the executive board for the period of 2017 to 2019. Toula Georgiopoulos, President Dana Vasilakos, First Vice President Anna Angelos, Second Vice President Kathy Korbakes, Recording Secretary Georgia Xeros, Corresponding Secretary Ruth Faklis, Treasurer Chris Alexopoulos, Assistant Treasurer Olga Paxinos, Advisor to the Board I wish good strength to everyone as we continue our philanthropic endeavors. On Mother s Day, amid all the celebration, we honored ten of our precious ladies who have in the past done so much for Philoptochos. They have cooked, baked, donated, and countless other duties that kept us a viable organization. We bestowed upon them honorary member for life. They include: Litsa Alikakos, Sally Banakis, Zafira Jouras, Sophia Kolyvas, Georgia Korbakes, Zoe Korbakis, Panayiota Paraskis, Angeline Sieracki, Toula Stameson and Betty Catsogiannis. Thank you ladies! The Christian Philoxenia Luncheon celebrating 5 years since its inception was a great success. Thank you to all who worked so hard. We thank Mr. Kosta Makris chef, our youth who served, Mr. Dennis Mavrages helper in the kitchen and Toula Georgiopoulos at the helm. We had great complements on our food and philoxenia. The five churches provided small gifts for all the seniors present. These gatherings are more than the food. Rather they are a gathering of men and women who enjoy seeing one another and socializing at their church homes. THE FESTIVAL IS COMING UP AND WE NEED ALL THE VOLUNTEERS TO COME OUT AND HELP. The Annual Metropolis Philoptochos Luncheon will be held on Saturday, September 23, at The Empress Banquets in Addison. Get your reservations in early. They will be going fast!!! At this time I would like to express my warmest Thank You to Father Tilemahos for his spiritual guidance, Presvytera Georgia, the Philoptochos Board and all its members, the Church Board, The Church Family, our donors and all who always supported us in the last two years. I, as president worked to the best of my ability and if I erred in any area please forgive me, it was not intentional. I am proud to be here at St. Spyridon for 50 years as Peter and I celebrate our 50 th wedding anniversary. A blessed 100 th Anniversary to our parish and especially to our next generations who will carry on. A wonderful summer to all. With Sisterly Agape, Olga Paxinos, Advisor to the board St. Spyridon Hellenic Orthodox Church 13

Our Saint Spyridon Vacation church school took place in June. The theme was Maker Fun Factory, Created by God Built with a purpose. We had 25 incoming kindergarten to fifth graders attending camp. We learned that God made us, God is for us, God will always loves us, God is always with us and God made us for a reason. We are thankful for Tessie Jones, Pigi Koutsis, Katie Theoharopoulos, Linda Hattar and all the volunteers for a great week at church camp. Enjoy the rest of the summer.
