Metropolitan Nathanael is a brother of the historic monastery of St. George Epanosifis in Crete, Greece. He was ordained a deacon (2003) and a presbyter (2010) by His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios of America. Prior to his ordination to the episcopacy, His Eminence served as the Deacon to Metropolitan Methodios ( ); Deacon to the Archbishop ( ); presiding priest of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, NYC ( ), and interim-pastor of the Holy Resurrection Church of Brookville, NY and the Saints Constantine and Helen Cathedral of Brooklyn, NY. As a parish priest in Manhattan, Metropolitan Nathanael developed a unique urban ministry, Orthodox Professionals in Action (OPA), which provided over 400 young professionals the opportunity to minister to the most vulnerable in society. From September 2013-March 2018, His Eminence served as the Director of the Office of Inter-Orthodox, Ecumenical and Interfaith Relations of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America. In this capacity, he managed and cultivated relationships between the Archdiocese and numerous religious organizations, think tanks, non-governmental organizations, and Permanent Missions to the United Nations. He also served as Director of the Archdiocesan Committee on Science and Technology (AACST). His Eminence coordinated the Archdiocesan commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of the March on Selma (2015), and represented the Archdiocese on the National Council of Churches (NCC) Special Task Force to End Racism in America. He serves as a member of a special non-partisan and interreligious working group in Washington, D.C., which seeks to advance religious freedom and pluralism in the Middle East. He is also a member of Tanenbaum s Communications Committee. During his tenure at the Archdiocese, Metropolitan Nathanael also served as the Executive Assistant to the Chairman of the Assembly of Canonical Orthodox Bishops of the USA and on the Assembly s Secretariat. His Eminence also established a Graduate Fellowship Program that provided graduate and post-graduate students the opportunity to serve the Church at the United Nations. In 2016, Metropolitan Nathanael attended the Holy and Great Council of the Orthodox Church and assisted the press office of the Ecumenical Patriarchate. On February 7, 2018, the Holy and Sacred Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate unanimously elected him Metropolitan of Chicago, succeeding His Eminence Metropolitan Iakovos of blessed-memory. He was ordained a Bishop on March 17th in the Holy Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, New York, and enthroned on March 24th in the Holy Cathedral of the Annunciation, Chicago May God grant him many years! 2 The Voice

3 When discussing the ordination of our new Metropolitan, some of the Bible Study students asked why the ordination took place just prior to the Epistle and Gospel reading. We discussed then that the bishop gets consecrated before the readings because one of the main functions of a bishop is to teach. Since the sermon follows the readings of the day, the new bishop then assumes his primary function of teaching as his first act following his ordination. In our Bible Study we discussed about this role of the bishop and how his office is the primary teaching office of the Church. We look for his success in that role when we pray for him in the Divine Liturgy: First of all, remember O Lord, our Metropolitan Nathanael. Grant that he may serve your holy churches in peace. Keep him safe, honorable, and healthy for many years, rightly teaching the word of Your truth. The bishop is responsible therefore, to teach the words of Christ s truth, through his writings, his sermons, and actions, through the people whom he designates to preach the word of God, clergy and laity alike, to ensure that those coming into the faith, do so with the knowledge of the truth about God. It was the ancient practice of the Church, that during Great Lent, those who were interested in joining the Church through baptism, the class of the catechumens, would be examined by the bishop as to their readiness. Therefore, every year, at the mid-point of Great Lent, the bishop would determine CATECHISM 101 which catechumens would be elevated to the class of those who are ready for illumination or baptism. That is why at the Presanctified Liturgy, upon entering the fourth week of Lent, we add prayers for those who are preparing for holy illumination, immediately following the prayers for the catechumens. The bishop decided which catechumens would be baptized each year by examining their knowledge of the faith. He would also discern whether each catechumen had the presence of the Holy Spirit through the gifts of the Holy Spirit evident in each person: love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, selfcontrol (Galatians 5:22,23). The bishop, as the one consecrated by the Holy Spirit, (perhaps you noticed in watching the ordination of our metropolitan that all the hymns were from the feast of Pentecost), he is the one to recognize and discern not just some academic knowledge of the faith, but the presence of the Holy Spirit in the life and character of each catechumen. Therefore, the presence of the Holy Spirit, faith in the salvific work of Jesus Christ, identifies a catechumen as one ready to receive illumination and the seal of the gift of the Holy Spirit which is already present in the person. Our own baptism, even in infancy, is not just a custom or religious ritual, but rather, the gift of the Holy Spirit, the presence of the Holy Spirit, and the fruitfulness of the Holy Spirit in us. It the gift of the reconciliation accomplished in the person of Jesus Christ. Baptism, the gift of illumination is something not fulfilled just by our learning or ascetical efforts. It is a gift, freely given to us by the Holy Spirit through Jesus Christ. Our learning and asceticism is our response, our effort to hold on to the presence of the Holy Spirit in gratitude and worship, to make sure we do not return to our old life of sin and death, but to embrace on to the new life in Christ our Savior. We all consider baptism a necessary sacrament for the salvation of every soul. It is the rebirth by water and the spirit that Jesus referred to in his conversation with Nicodemus. Yet, following our baptism, we commit acts by which we separate ourselves from the presence of the Holy Spirit in us. After all, the Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Truth. When we embrace falsehood by choosing to follow our own justification, we push the Holy Spirit aside. It is at this point, often repeated in everyone s lifetime, that the sacrament of confession, the reconciliation accomplished in Jesus Christ through His Church, is just as necessary for our salvation as is baptism. The re-establishment of the presence of the Holy Spirit is necessary to sanctify us, to transform us into members of the body of Christ, so that when we receive Holy Communion, we are simply expressing that we are already in the Body of Christ through the Holy Spirit. As we pray for the fruitful ministry of our new Metropolitan Nathanael, to teach the word of Truth, I St. Spyridon Hellenic Orthodox Church 3

4 hope he will see the gifts of the presence of the Holy Spirit in our community, and in all of us personally. As the body of Christ, we look forward to the continued gifts of the Holy Spirit among us, with a new spiritual shepherd guiding us unto greater communion with one another and with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Amen. In His Service, Fr. Tilemahos Alikakos STEWARDSHIP 2018 STEWARDSHIP GOALS FOR 2018: 400 STEWARDS Invite your family and friends to become Stewards of our parish. AVERAGE STEWARDSHIP GOAL: $50/month or $600/year Our current average Stewardship is $415, ranging from $250 to $2,400 annually. Stewardship Goal: 300 Please help us reach our average stewardship goal! The base from which we serve as the voice of Christ in a changing world is the parish. A strong parish provides opportunities for sharing the Good News of Christ, for welcoming those that are searching for a spiritual home, and a base from which we are sent out into the world. The parish also provides a place for worship, community and education in the faith. To be stewards of the Gospel, we need to be stewards of our parish. This requires the vision and inspiration to see the parish, not as it is, but as it could be. We are called to offer ourselves and our treasure to make our local church all that is can be. We hope and pray that this year s stewardship and commitment to our parish will stand worthy of our parish history and the blessings of our patron Saint Spyridon. We thank the 189 Stewards who have committed their stewardship for Stewardship materials are available at the church office, in the community hall and on our website. 5 Dear Parishioners and Friends of Philoptochos, PHILOPTOCHOS NEWS Greetings and Kali Anastasi! We are almost at the end of our Lenten Journey; we continue to be spiritually uplifted so that we reach the Light of our Christ s Resurrection! The Ladies Philoptochos Society of St. Spyridon, have been actively involved during this Lenten period; immersed in charitable projects and attending and supporting spiritual events. One such event that we ve supported was the Southside Quilt A Thon at our Sister Church, St. Constantine and Helen. Philoptochos women from our Metropolis participated in quilt making for children afflicted with cancer and other calamitous deceases. It was heart warming to be a part of, and contribute to helping our sick children. The quilts and pillows will be distributed to Children Hospitals throughout the Chicago land area. With much anticipation and excitement, the Philoptochos women look forward to attending the Enthronement and Luncheon that will follow of our new Metropolitan! AXIOS! On Palm Sunday we will again have our Annual Bake Sale, to benefit the less fortunate in our community. Please support us by baking Easter goods and by purchasing the flavorful Easter home baked sweets! We are also asking you to support our Philoptochos, by attending our Traditional Palm Sunday Luncheon prepared by Executive Chef, Mr. Dean Eliacostas. Please make your reservations early, and partake with all of us on this special Sunday of Palms! Recently we also celebrated the 80th birthday of our devoted Philoptochos sister and friend, Mrs. Dina Katsoulis. We wish Dina, good health and much happiness! In closing, I would like to include a significant excerpt from a prayer by Archimandrite Nectarios: Show us, gracious Lord, the talents You have given us so that we play our full part in the life of the Church. You have placed me as one thread among many, as essential as any other, as You weave the beautiful garment that is Your Church. We pray that You will never allow us to tear or damage that garment, but always contribute to its beauty and perfection; together with Your Apostles, Saints and Martyrs who provide such a holy example. Καλό Πάσχα και Καλή Ανάσταση! With Christian Agape, Toula Georgiopoulos, Philoptochos President Wishing Angela Tsarouhis good luck with her studies at Holy Cross College St. Spyridon Hellenic Orthodox Church 5
