ST. GABRIEL THE ARCHANGEL PARISH BULLETIN November 15, 2015 Thirty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time Here s another way to look at the readings today consider them not so much as an admonition about the end of the world but rather as an observation on living in it. Jesus says about the end-time, that no one knows the day or the hour, neither the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. It would seem then, that this day, this moment, this life is the time to bear fruit rather than trying to guesstimate and calculate when the end will happen. So seize the day! Welcome the opportunity each moment brings to measure up: to accept the redemptive love and grace of God, and to share that love with others. The just shall shine like the stars Today we commemorate in a special way those in consecrated life. Those who live a religious life in imitation of Christ s own poverty, chastity, and obedience, offer a special witness to the gospel of the Kingdom of God. Although all Christians are consecrated to God in baptism and all are called to make a generous gift of our lives, in the family, at work, in service to the Church, (and) in works of mercy, those in religious life experience this consecration in a particular way through sacred bonds called the evangelical counsels. Pope Francis has said, Every consecrated person is a gift for the People of God on a journey. There is much need of their presence, that strengthens and renews the commitment to spread the gospel, to Christian education, to charity for the most needy, to contemplative prayer; the commitment to a human and spiritual formation of young people, of families; the commitment to justice and peace in the human family...consecrated persons are signs of God in diverse environments of life, they are leaven for the growth of a more just and fraternal society Totally consecrated to God, they are totally given over to their brethren, to carry the light of Christ there where the darkness is thickest and to spread his hope to hearts who are discouraged, emphasized the Pontiff. The Church and the world have need of this testimony of the love and mercy of God. (Pope Francis, February 2, 2014) In the Peace and Love of Our Risen Lord! Father John Michele Bergeron Catholic Campaign for Human Development Locally, CCHD continues to support the New Orleans Master Craftsman s Guild in Corpus Christi-Epiphany Parish in New Orleans. Skilled tradesmen and craftsmen are training young men in historic trades of masonry, ironworking and plastering. Other funded projects address ways to reduce incarceration rates and improve the juvenile justice system. Please give generously to the Catholic Campaign for Human Development during this year s collection weekend of November 21-22, 2015.

Witnessing to God s Love The essence of consecrated life is not about the ministries we do. In sickness and old age consecrated life continues to have meaning. Although marriage, property, and control over one s life are precious God-given gifts and rights, the call to sacrifice these gifts witnesses to the community at large, that ultimately in the fullness of God s kingdom, these gifts are no longer necessary. Thus religious [consecrated] life is a gift to the church which those called do not earn or deserve, but in God s mysterious unconditional love God bestows on the church.
