The Catholic Community of Saint Barnabas June 5, 2016, Tenth Sunday in Ordinary Time PARISH MISSION The family of St. Barnabas Parish celebrates the Eucharist, welcomes and serves all, shares talents, fosters learning, and initiates others into the life of Christ. 10134 South Longwood, Chicago, IL 60643, www.stbarnabasparish.org, 773-779-1166

The Pastor s Mutterings Jesus and his disciples happened to cross the path of a funeral procession. The one who has died is the only son of a woman who had lost her husband. There was surely no more forlorn person in Israel at Jesus time than such a woman. Without a husband or son, she had no legal rights, not one to care for her or about her, no social standing or importance. Jesus touched the young man s coffin, brought him back to life, and gave him back to his mother. This particular miracle is unlike most of the other of Jesus s healings reported in the Gospels, because there is no evidence that anyone asked him to perform it. There is also no mention that the woman, or anyone else in the procession, was a person of faith or a friend of Jesus. Jesus healed the young man because he was deeply moved by the sadness he encountered, and his heart was filled with compassion and empathy for the grieving mother. Each one of us has a face in mind of someone who has lost a child, a person we love who s in peril, someone we dearly want to save. In our time, sons and daughters continue to die and mothers grieve them. There is so much suffering in our city and all over the world, and ever-fewer resources to publically alleviate it. Who cares for abused women, neglected and hungry children, and all those who find themselves in precarious conditions? It must be those who want to be like Jesus, who have the compassionate heart of Jesus, and feel kinship with the most vulnerable and needy among us. Dear God, give us generous and caring hearts, in the example of your Son. Amen. Human Concerns CATHOLIC RELIEF SERVICES RICE BOWL GRANT AWARD NOTIFICATION Dear St. Barnabas Parish, It is with great pleasure that we inform you that District 9 Food Pantry at St. Gall Parish has been selected to receive a CRS Rice Bowl Grant for the 2016-2017 funding year. The committed work of St. Barnabas Parish plays a crucial role in fighting poverty in the Archdiocese of Chicago, and this grant of $1,750 is meant to help continue those efforts. Your project reflects the very spirit of CRS Rice Bowl on a local and global effort. Through your project, Catholics in the Chicagoland area are able to see how their generous almsgiving during Lent helps to animate the mission of Catholic Relief Services to eliminate poverty and injustice around the world. We are grateful for the opportunity to support you in your important work, which in turn helps us carry out our mission to strengthen solidarity between the United States Catholics and our brothers and sisters around the world. Along with this grant, all of us at the Office for Peace and Justice offer our prayers and support as you continue in this good work. In Peace, Bethany Collins, CRS Coordinator

It is important to remember to take me out of our busy schedules to reflect and give thanks for what we have and for those around us. I want to take this opportunity to thank the Imagine. Innovate. Inspire. Campaign leadership team and volunteers. They have answered the call to give back to St. Barnabas Parish. Because of the hard work of our volunteers and generosity of so many people, we currently have received more than $1.1 million in pledges and gi s. I am abundantly apprecia ve of the sacrifices our parishioners and school families have made and hopeful that all will prayerfully consider a meaningful gi. Next weekend, we will be celebra ng Commitment Weekend. All parish families will be asked to complete a form where they can either indicate they have already made a gi, record their pledge, or offer their inten on of prayer if they are not in a financial posi on to support the campaign. It will be a joyous opportunity to support the parish during our campaign. From everyone to whom much has been given, much will be required; and from the one to whom much has been entrusted, even more will be demanded. - Luke 12:48 Blessings, Administration

Human Concerns PEACE QUOTE Unless we teach children PEACE someone else will teach them violence. C. McCarthy CHILDREN S CLOTHING CLOSET Children s Clothing Closet at St. Gall s Parish is a ministry dedicated to children: newborn up to age twelve. They are in need of clothing for the summer season: short sleeve T-shirts, pants, and shoes. We ask that all clothing be washed and folded before being donated. St. Barnabas will be collecting clothing the weekend of June 4-5 in the Narthex of Church. Also, you may deliver the clothing on Tuesdays: from 10:00 noon, at the Catholic Charities building located in the convent 5533 S. Sawyer Ave, Chicago, IL or call 773-349-8838. If anyone would like to help deliver the clothing, please contact Sr. Julie Flynn at jflynn@stbarnabasparish.org. Thank you for your generosity. SU CASA June 12 will be our next SuCasa luncheon and we would certainly welcome volunteers and/or food donations. We are requesting the following items: hot dogs, potato salad, cole slaw (home made or store bought is great), canned peaches, hot dog buns, and lemonade mix. We can also use paper plates, napkins and plastic cups, and forks. Liz and Tom Marren are hosting this month and items can be dropped off at their house or, if you are accompanying us, you can bring them when we meet in the church parking lot at 10:30. Please call Liz or Tom for any further information 773-239-8141. HAVING A PARTY... for graduation, holidays, your block party, etc? The St. Barnabas Eccommittee can help make your event an ecologically green one. We provide containers for aluminum cans which we will distribute to you and collect. The revenue from these cans is used to purchase eco-friendly products for St. Barnabas events. We also provide paper cups and water coolers to avoid using bottled water. So much bottled water comes from 3rd world countries. People are dying there as we drink their water here. Please don't purchase or drink bottled water. Lives depend on your compassionate choice. You can call the rectory at 773-779-1166 or call 773-779-6064. Thank you from Mother Earth and those who thirst. It asks that we use our time, talent, and treasure to fulfill the depth of our commitment to St. Barnabas Parish. We rely on the generosity of our parishioners to fund our ministries and operations, and for this, we are grateful. While stewardship gifts and pledges are paid over a calendar year, St. Barnabas s fiscal year is July 1-June 30 th. In looking at our fiscal year to date, 60% of parishioners give to the Sunday offertory. An increase of 5% since January! We are thankful for the gifts we receive and ask the 40% to join this community of donors. New and renewing support is critical to our ending the fiscal year with a balanced budget. Think about how important St. Barnabas Parish is to your family, and please give with a generous heart. Online giving is a great way to give to the Sunday Offertory. Currently, 130 parishioners give online up from 72 in November. Online giving saves our parish time and money in printing and mailing costs, and provides more reliable Sunday offertory income. Give generously to him and do so without a grudging heart; then because of this the Lord your God will bless you in all your work and in everything you put your hand to. ~ Deuteronomy 15:10
