But Luke presents us with an image of Christ whose reign begins on the cross with his promise of Paradise to a thief hanging at his side. Jesus brings about the kingdom even in the last moment of his life, extending the mercy of God to yet another nameless outsider, a thief condemned justly to death (Luke 23:41). This man recognizes Jesus both as a man who has done nothing criminal, but also one who is about to come into [his] kingdom (23:41, 42). The kingdom of God that Jesus proclaimed as being already in your midst is present in Jesus on the cross, extending mercy by asking God to forgive those who have crucified him, for they know not what they do (23:34). To the thief who asks Jesus to remember him when he comes into his kingdom, Jesus promises, Today you will be with me in Paradise (23:43). What wonderful words to bring the church year to a close. From the Pastor s Desk Dear Parishioners: Christ the King: This Sunday is the feast of the majestic King, Christ our Lord. It s the last Sunday of the liturgical year. It s our belief that at the end of the world, Christ the King will tie up all the loose ends and bring the whole creation to an end and present it to his heavenly Father. Meanwhile, he is King of our lives today. He rules over us not with power and glamor, but through love and humility, through selflessness and self-effacement. He is the King who washes our feet and dies for us so that we can have life and have it abundantly. His Kingdom fills the whole world. His Kingdom values are often contrary to what the world cherishes. But the deepest longings and desires of our hearts can be found in the values of this universal King, Christ our Lord. All our dreams for love and intimacy, peace and justice, health and happiness all these are the values of Christ the King as well. We can open our hearts and minds more fully to this King who will dwell in our lives and make us shine with truth and integrity. Long live Christ the King! Advent: Coming up next Sunday: With the feast of Christ the King, we turn our attention next Sunday to the beginning of the season of Advent. What a beautiful season of longing and waiting for the Lord to be born all over again in our lives! Let s get ready psychologically and spiritually for this wonderful season of Advent which will lead us to the new-born King at Christmas. Happy Thanksgiving: The fabulous, heartwarming, all- American festival of Thanksgiving is round the corner. When I visit the classrooms, I see children all excited by the prospect of having families together and sharing the enjoyable turkey dinner. People all over the nation are getting ready to travel back home to be with family. Love is in the air everywhere. According to AAA, the Thanksgiving travelers are to increase this time for the fourth consecutive year. AAA estimates that Thanksgiving travelers this year will total 43.6 million, an increase of 0.7 percent from the 43.3 million who traveled last year. All that travel and trouble is to meet family and friends---and give thanks to God and one another. We have much to be thankful for. Gratitude makes us better human beings and Christians. Gratitude makes explicit our human condition and our dependence on God and one another. It helps us appreciate the fact that we are not self-sufficient and that we are interdependent. It energizes us to go out of ourselves to others and think about others needs. With our love and service, we can create better families and communities and transform the human family. Around the 50 th death anniversary of JFK, let his words inspire us: As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them." Happy Thanksgiving! Mother-Daughter Tea: Last Saturday November 16 th, the cute and charming event of Mother-Daughter Tea was held in the parish center. I had the privilege of saying the opening prayer at which I thanked God for the gifts of family and friends and the special relationship between mothers and daughters. There were daughters, mothers, and many grandmothers who attended this event. It was well organized. Food was excellent. The entertainment was enjoyable. I would like to thank Christina Medina, Mirna Palma, Maricela Gonzalez and their team for a beautiful event. It was a lot of work for them, but the results were a thing of beauty---and a joy forever! Thanksgiving Dinner of Grade 1: On November 18 th, I had my Thanksgiving dinner already---with the first graders in our Falcon Hall. My dinner on the actual Thanksgiving Day is going to be a bonus! The first graders put on a charming show in their pilgrim costumes. Many parents were present. It was another delightful event of the school, giving a sneak-peak into the wonderful feast of Thanksgiving. Well done children of First Grade! Well done, Mrs. Burke and Mrs. Nelson! Peninsula Clergy Meeting: I attended a peninsula clergy meeting on November 14 th at New Vision United Methodist Church in Millbrae. The meeting was called by our local Assemblyman Kevin Mullin (he is our parish school alum as well!). Twelve clergymen of different denominations attended the meeting. It was a productive meeting of sharing of our ideas of faith and service for the people we are called to serve. I am amazed at how the different churches are all focused on how to take care of those in need, especially the poor. Our faith impels us to go out and help others and make life better for the world. It s a faith that does justice. Assemblyman Mullin did a fine job of facilitating the meeting; bringing together clergymen of different churches is itself an achievement. Politics and religion have to meet in the service of fellow human beings. Thanksgiving Humor: Grandfather Turkey: Just before Thanksgiving, the holding pen was abuzz as Mother Turkey scolded her younger birds. "You turkeys are always into mischief," she gobbled. "If your grandfather could see the things you do, he'd turn over in his gravy." Hatched?: This guy goes to his doctor. "Doctor, help me! I can't stop acting like a turkey!" "I see," said the doctor. "How long have you had this problem?" "Let me think a second. Mom laid the egg in 1954..." With Thanksgiving Day wishes and blessings, Your Friend & Pastor, Father Charles Puthota
