Parish Council s Open to All The Parish Council is responsible for overseeing the routine operations of the parish and welcomes all interested parishioners to attend its monthly meetings. Our next meeting is Tuesday, March 27 at 7:00PM. If a parishioner would like to address a topic of concern, please contact the president, John Wagner, at 275-2010 to include the item on the agenda. The Council looks forward to hearing from parishioners with ideas on making our parish even better! PASSION The contrast between the processional reading in today s liturgy and the proclamation of the Passion is striking. We are given a glimpse of how profoundly the word of God is fulfilled in Jesus. First he must be hailed as the Messiah, the One who is to come. He must be acknowledged by all, though they do not know what they are saying. They think he is the promised king, a worldly king of the Jews who will free them from the Roman occupation. They do not yet understand, even the disciples, exactly where this triumphal procession is leading. In our lives, we too do not know where we are going. It is in faith that we can follow Christ wherever he may lead us, trusting that death is not the end, nor evil the victor. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

It is clearly inconsistent to combat trafficking in endangered species while remaining completely indifferent to human trafficking, unconcerned about the poor, or undertaking to destroy another human being deemed unwanted. This compromises the very meaning of our struggle for the sake of the environment. It is no coincidence that, in the canticle in which Saint Francis praises God for his creatures, he goes on to say: Praised be you my Lord, through those who give pardon for your love. Everything is connected. Concern for the environment thus needs to be joined to a sincere love for our fellow human beings and an unwavering commitment to resolving the problems of society. Pope Francis, Laudato Si, 91. General Information PARISH REGISTRATION: New parishioners are always welcome. You may register in the parish by calling the parish office. Registration forms can be downloaded from the church website or are available at the church office. Also, please notify us when moving out of the parish or when have a change of address. www.johnxxiiicc.org Saint John XXIII Catholic Community The Gospel According to Mark Mark has introduced us to Jesus first and then to his followers who will eventually be identified as apostles. As mentioned two weeks ago, a follower will need to grow in understanding of who Jesus is before becoming a disciple. When Mark uses the word disciples, they are never named. To explain this we have to get a bit ahead of the text. Most times discipleship is mentioned in connection with the sea. Scholars feel that the sea is a reflection on the struggles of the early Christians and the church. The sea represents the evil of the world that keeps people from following Jesus. We first encounter Jesus and the sea in Mark 3:7, Jesus withdrew toward the sea with his disciples. In Mark 4:35, Jesus directs those he is with, Let us cross to the other side; those on the boat are only referred to as them, neither disciples or apostles While Jesus sleeps on a cushion in the stern, a violent squall comes up; waves are breaking over the boat and the boat is filling with water. When they awaken Jesus, he calms the sea, with the command, Quiet! Be still! He then says to them, Why are you terrified? Do you not yet have faith? After this they wonder, Who then is this whom even wind and sea obey? In Chapter 5, they go to the other side of the lake to heal a possessed man. In Chapter 6, after the first multiplication of the loaves and fish, the disciples are again on the lake, being tossed around by the wind. Jesus comes to them, walking on the water and again tells them do not be afraid. Until Chapter 8, Jesus travels back and forth across the sea, from the Jewish side to the Gentile side, until finally disembarking from the sea. We have to understand the concept of the sea in ancient times. It is the primal abyss, the dwelling place of sea monsters. It is the place of the dark and threatening unknown. A place considered evil; a place where a herd of swine possessed by the legion of Satan would be tossed. Mark represents the transitions and transformations of the Christian community as going through the storms of the sea. Starting as a small Jewish community, growing to encompass Gentiles as well as fellow Jews, the church had to grow into an understanding that the message of Jesus was universal and open to all humankind. Next week we will get back on track with Chapter 1. Fr. Ark Attention Liturgical Ministers Sign-up sheets for Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter Vigil and Easter Sunday are available on the Ministry Table. Ministers are needed for all positions.
