St. Gregory s Episcopal Church The Prefect s Post May & June 2017 Red Up the Church for Pentecost! Mission & 2 May Birthdays 3 Sunday, June 4th! Upcoming Events Notables Summer Service Schedule Begins: Services at 8:30 & 10am Wear something Red! Red is the liturgical color for Pentecost Sunday. Red recalls the tongues of flame in which the Holy Spirit descended on the first Pentecost. Pentecost is the great festival that marks the birth of the Christian church by the power of the Holy Spirit. Pentecost means fiftieth day and is celebrated 50 days after Easter Sunday. The Day of Pentecost is one of the seven principal feasts of the church year in the Episcopal Church (BCP, p. 15), and is identified by the BCP as one of the feasts that is especially appropriate for baptism (p. 312). Special music will feature the brass quintet, Tarnished Brass along with our choir, which will be the choir s last Sunday to sing before their summer break. Page 2 The Prefect s Post May & June 2017 Mission & Outreach Updates May and June will be a busy time for Outreach projects. With help from the congregation we can make these a success. We'll be helping two summer reading programs, The Diocesan Reading Camp --- in Beulah this year --- and the Kids Count program here in Muskegon. For Kids Count we are collecting healthy snack items and donated new books. For the Reading Camp we are seeking cash donations to purchase the particular 60 books needed for the Camp. Details on both reading programs appear below. A Donation Tub in the narthex will collect snack items for Muskegon's Kids Count. The deadline for Kids Count is June 18. To donate toward the Reading Camp books give a check or cash to the church office or to an Outreach Committee member. Checks should say For the Reading Camp on the memo line. Deadline for Reading Camp contributions is June 4. One more thing! Saint Gregory's story lady, Leslie Day will visit Kids Count June 22 for a story and craft session. Kids will make animal masks then play roles as they act out the story. Outreach committee members will assist. - Jim Horan, M/O Chair -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Summer Program Community Encompass' Kids Count program serves children in the McLaughlin Neighborhood. It helps children maintain vital reading skills in the summer. Encompass already has most of the books wanted but REALLY needs snack items and fun extras to make the program a success. Donated books (for gr 1-5) are welcome extras. Deadline for donations is June 18. Crackers-and-cheese packs; Mini-raisin boxes; Juice boxes; Crackers-and-peanutbutter packs; Pretzel bags; Apples; Oranges; Donated books for grades 1 5. ( Any new books will be used as special reading prizes) ================================================================ Here are the Books that will be used in the Diocesan Reading Camps this Summer!

May & June 2017 The Prefect s Post Page 5 We re Planning an Ordination Celebration And Everyone is Invited!! Plans have begun to celebrate Deacon Lily Marx s Ordination to the priesthood. Historically for St. Gregory s, this is the first Ordination we have hosted. July 29th at 11am is the date for the service. A luncheon at the Verdonis Banquet Center on Seminole Road near Seaway Drive will immediately follow the service. Additional parking will be available in the high school lot right across the street from the church. This is an exciting time for everyone. Watch for more information as the day gets nearer!! Library Space Renovations Underway It will have a different look; it will serve our Parish functions better. The library space will be upgraded to a more usable, easier to keep clean area that will be multi-functional. Books that were not kept for reference were donated to the Norton Shores Library book sale. Furniture that has not been spoken for will be donated to the Rescue Mission after May 21st. Walls will be painted; carpet will be replaced with easy to maintain flooring, and small group tables and chairs will make for an inviting atmosphere. Furniture will be easily moved to necessitate food service for dinners and luncheons. Check on the progress as we make our building more user-friendly!
