In May of 1902, Alexis Carrel, an unbelieving young doctor who would win the Nobel prize for medicine ten years later for his pioneering work on reconnecting ruptured blood vessels and for developing the heart pump (both still crucial to today s heart surgery), agreed to take the place of a colleague who had to back out of his commitment to accompany a train carrying sick people to the famous shrine of Lourdes, the site of many remarkable healings ever since the Blessed Virgin Mary was said to have made a number of appearances there to a 14-yearold girl named Bernadette Soubirous in 1858. In one of them, Bernadette said, Mary revealed to her a spring, and soon a number of people regained good health after interacting with its waters. One of the passengers on the train, Marie-Louise Bailly, 23, was alarmingly ill, in fact, clearly on the verge of dying. After examining her, Dr. Carrel was sure of his diagnosis: a hopeless case of tubercular peritonitis. Carrel suspected that she might not reach Lourdes alive. But she did. And after the application of Lourdes water, her condition quickly and totally improved, against all medical expectation. And that night, as Carrel later recalled in his book The Voyage to Lourdes, he went to the shrine s basilica and listened while the organ boomed and a thousand voices chanted. Knowing he had witnessed a miracle, he prayed: FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ~ FEBRUARY 5, 2017 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK Gentle Virgin, Who bringeth help to the unfortunate who humbly implore Thee, keep me with Thee. I believe in Thee. Thou didst answer my prayers by a blazing miracle. I am still blind to it, I still doubt. But the greatest desire of my life, my highest aspiration, is to believe, to believe passionately, implicitly, and never more to analyze and doubt. Thy name is more gracious than the morning sun. Take unto Thyself this uneasy sinner with the anxious frown and troubled heart who has exhausted himself in the vain pursuit of fantasies. Beneath the deep, harsh warnings of my intellectual pride a smothered dream persists. Alas, it is still only a dream but the most enchanting of them all. It is the dream of believing in Thee and of loving Thee with the shining spirit of the men of God. Marie-Louise later gratefully described her good fortune that, she wrote, came from that blessed Grotto from which issues that spring where I had the happiness to have life again. She became a Sister of Charity, enjoying good health until she died in 1937. Dr. Carrel later embraced his Catholic Faith again and worked for many years at the Rockefeller Institute. He died in 1944. This coming Saturday is the feast of Our Lady of Lourdes. And please continue to pray for the volunteers and participants in this year s American Special Children s Pilgrimage Group, whose coming journey to Lourdes you recently supported so generously by the purchase of their raffle tickets. Msgr. David Hubba SOCIAL CONCERNS MEETING FEBRUARY 9 The Saint Joseph Social Concerns Committee will meet this coming Thursday, February 9 in the Lower School Library at 7:30 pm. All are welcome. It is called Cornerstone referring to Christ being the Cornerstone, the foundation upon which our lives are built. On the weekend, you will experience a focused atmosphere where you can initiate, deepen, or revitalize your relationship with Christ in a warm, welcoming environment. A representative from our Women s Cornerstone Ministry will speak at all Masses this weekend and be available to answer questions. FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ~ FEBRUARY 5, 2017 MEN S CORNERSTONE MEETING FEBRUARY 8 The next Men s Cornerstone meeting will be on Wednesday, February 8 at 7:30 pm in the Parish Life Center (268 Grove Street, Oradell behind Saint Joseph lower school). A SPECIAL THANK YOU TO OUR YOUTH GROUP Dear Donna Cirino (Saint Joseph Youth Minister), On behalf of my family and -- especially -- my son, USMC 1st Lt. Christian Talarico, we sincerely thank you and the members of St. Joe's Youth Group for your thoughtfulness, hard work and generosity. Christian was absolutely thrilled (and so surprised!) to receive the beautiful handmade rosaries and the care package, which he said was just loaded with goodies!! (We could "hear" the smile on his face as he spoke to us on the phone.) He told us that he distributed the rosaries to his commanding officers, and shared the contents of the care package with other members of his battalion. From the bottom of our hearts, you have no idea how much this meant to my son and his comrades in the 2nd Battalion, 5th Marines. Please continue to pray for our soldiers, and also to invoke the protection of St. Michael the Archangel. May God bless you in all you do. Sincerely, Pam and Guy Talarico and family CATHOLIC CAMPUS MINISTRY If your child attends FDU (Metro Campus), Kean University, Montclair State University, NJCU, Ramapo College, Rutgers Newark, NJIT, Essex Community College, or Stevens Institute, send them this link: ccm-nj.com It s the website for the Newman Apostolate (or Catholic Campus Ministry) for the Archdiocese of Newark.
