10:45 Orders of Worship May 31, 2015 (See a separate bulletin for 10:45) The concept of a Triune God has been expressed through art in a number of ways. The triquetra symbol on the left represents the intersection of three overlapping circles. The words are from 2 Corinthians 13:13 NRSV. This original artwork in the north office hallway welcomes you as you enter our church building. When we say God is the Triune God, we are saying something about who God is beyond, before, and after the universe: that there is community within God. Our experience of this is reflected in Paul's words today. When we pray to God as Jesus prayed to his Abba, (an Aramaic word that would most closely be translated as Daddy, ) the Spirit prays within us, creating between us and God the same close, intimate relationship Jesus has with the Father. WELCOME TO TRINITY! We are glad you are here at one of our FOUR WORSHIP SERVICES this weekend, each centered around the same scriptures but with four different musical styles. THIS BULLETIN contains information for the two 10:45 a.m. Sunday services, one a festive setting in the sanctuary and the other a praise worship in Jack s Place, our new fellowship hall. A SEPARATE BULLETIN lists the 6:30 p.m. Saturday night folk service and the 8:30 a.m. traditional service. We invite you to turn to pages 11 & 12 in this bulletin for HELPFUL INFORMATION for visitors and members alike, such as restrooms, child care and service participants. WEEKLY ANNOUNCEMENT sheets are available at the doors or from a host or usher and are available online at www.trinityashland.org. SUNDAY SCHOOL CLASSES for all ages are Sunday mornings at 9:30 a.m. See the hallway information board or a Sunday School host for class listings and locations. This BULLETIN contains the worship order and the red Evangelical Lutheran Worship in the pew racks contains liturgy in the front and hymns, listed in bold numbers, in the back. PAGES 91-93 provide interesting background information on the pattern of our worship. LARGE PRINT BULLETINS of this service are available from the ushers. In this time of transition you are welcome, prior to the prelude, to pray in your pew using the kneeler or to come to the communion rail, to pray for our interim pastor and for the future of Trinity and in thanksgiving to God for the way Trinity has been used for the work of the Lord in Ashland. THE PASCHAL CANDLE, which has been lit near the lectern during the season of Easter as a reminder of Jesus physical presence in the days after his resurrection, is now placed near the font, to be lit at baptisms, funerals and other occasions. The hymn looks to the day when we shall gather at the throne of the Lamb to praise Christ s holy name. *PRAYER OF THE DAY Let us pray. < Stanzas 1 & 3 - Left / Lectern side Stanzas 2 & 4 - Right / Pulpit side > Almighty Creator and ever-living God: we worship your glory, eternal Three-in-One, and we praise your power, majestic One-in-Three. Keep us steadfast in this faith, defend us in all adversity, and bring us at last into your presence, where you live in endless joy and love, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen Please be seated CHOIR ANTHEM Thee We Adore, Eternal Lord - arr. Benjamin Culli A paraphrase of the Te Deum Based on JERUSALEM by C. H. H. Parry (1848-1918) + + + WORD + + + God speaks to us in scripture reading, preaching and song. FIRST READING Isaiah 6:1 8 Pew Bible, OT pg. 704 In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the LORD sitting on a throne, high and lofty; and the hem of his robe filled the temple. 2 Seraphs were in attendance above him; each had six wings: with two they covered their faces, and with two they covered their feet, and with two they flew. 3 And one called to another and said: "Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory." 4 The pivots on the thresholds shook at the voices of those who called, and the house filled with smoke. 5 And I said: "Woe is me! I am lost, for I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips; yet my eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts!" 6 Then one of the seraphs flew to me, holding a live coal that had been taken from the altar with a pair of tongs. 7 The seraph touched my mouth with it and said: "Now that this has touched your lips, your guilt has departed and your sin is blotted out." 8 Then I heard the voice of the LORD saying, "Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?" And I said, "Here am I; send me!" The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. 4

PSALM Psalm 29 - Sung responsively - Tone 1 1 Ascribe to the LORD, you gods, ascribe to the LORD glo- ry and strength. 2 Ascribe to the LORD the glory due God's name; worship the LORD in the beau- ty of holiness. 3 The voice of the LORD is upon the waters; the God of glory thunders; the LORD is upon the mighty waters. 4 The voice of the LORD is a pow- erful voice; the voice of the LORD is a voice of splendor. 5 The voice of the LORD breaks the cedar trees; the LORD breaks the ce- dars of Lebanon; 6 the LORD makes Lebanon skip like a calf, and Mount Hermon like a young wild ox. 7 The voice of the LORD bursts forth in lightning flashes. 8 The voice of the LORD shakes the wilderness; the LORD shakes the wilder- ness of Kadesh. 9 The voice of the LORD makes the oak trees writhe and strips the forests bare. And in the temple of the LORD all are crying, "Glory!" 10 The LORD sits enthroned a- bove the flood; the LORD sits enthroned as king for- evermore. 11 O LORD, give strength to your people; give them, O LORD, the bless- ings of peace. SECOND READING Romans 8:12 17 Pew Bible, NT pg. 164 12 So then, brothers and sisters, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh 13 for if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. 14 For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. 15 For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received a spirit of adoption. When we cry, "Abba! Father!" 16 it is that very Spirit bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ if, in fact, we suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. 5

*GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Alleluia, Alleluia pg. 142 *GOSPEL John 6:1-14 Pew Bible, NT pg. 100 The holy gospel according to John. Glory to you, O Lord. After this Jesus went to the other side of the Sea of Galilee, also called the Sea of Tiberias. 2 A large crowd kept following him, because they saw the signs that he was doing for the sick. 3 Jesus went up the mountain and sat down there with his disciples. 4 Now the Passover, the festival of the Jews, was near. 5 When he looked up and saw a large crowd coming toward him, Jesus said to Philip, "Where are we to buy bread for these people to eat?" 6 He said this to test him, for he himself knew what he was going to do. 7 Philip answered him, "Six months' wages would not buy enough bread for each of them to get a little." 8 One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, said to him, 9 There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish. But what are they among so many people? 10 Jesus said, "Make the people sit down." Now there was a great deal of grass in the place; so they sat down, about five thousand in all. 11 Then Jesus took the loaves, and when he had given thanks, he distributed them to those who were seated; so also the fish, as much as they wanted. 12 When they were satisfied, he told his disciples, "Gather up the fragments left over, so that nothing may be lost." 13 So they gathered them up, and from the fragments of the five barley loaves, left by those who had eaten, they filled twelve baskets. 14 When the people saw the sign that he had done, they began to say, "This is indeed the prophet who is to come into the world." The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. Please be seated HYMN OF THE DAY Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God Almighty! ELW 413 NICENE CREED pg. 104 We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. 6

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION After each portion of the prayers: Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. SERMON TRIGGERING THE MIRACLE Pastor Sanford C. *CANTICLE OF THANKSGIVING Praise God From Whom All Blessings Flow ELW 885 *OFFERING PRAYER Please stand and sing this traditional doxology as the offering is presented. Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; praise God, all creatures here below; praise God above, ye heav'nly host; praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. - Thomas Ken, 1637-1711, alt. God of mercy and grace, the eyes of all wait upon you, and you open your hand in blessing. Fill us with good things at your table, that we may come to the help of all in need, through Jesus Christ, our redeemer and Lord. Amen. + + + MEAL + + + God feeds us with the presence of Jesus Christ > The communion liturgy is found in the ELW beginning on page 144 < *GREAT THANKSGIVING The Lord Be with You pg. 144 *PREFACE It is indeed right, our duty and our joy,......we praise your name and join their unending hymn: *SANCTUS Holy, Holy, Holy pg. 144 *THANKSGIVING AT THE TABLE (V) Holy, mighty, and merciful Lord, heaven and earth are full of your glory. In great love you sent to us Jesus, your Son, who reached out to heal the sick and suffering, who preached good news to the poor, and who, on the cross, opened his arms to all. In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. Remembering, therefore, his death, resurrection, and ascension, we await his coming in glory. Pour out upon us the Spirit of your love, O Lord, and unite the wills of all who share this heavenly food, the body and blood of Jesus Christ, our Lord; to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be all honor and glory, now and forever. Amen. 8
