BAR MITZVAH SERVICE FOR [NAME-ENGLISH] [NAME-HEBREW] TEMPLE [NAME] RABBI [NAME] JUNE 9, 2007 23 SIVAN 5767

WELCOME TO THE BAR MITZVAH OF [NAME ENGLISH] JUNE 9, 2007 23 SIVAN 5767 TEMPLE [NAME] RABBI [NAME] MUSIC: [cantor] Oseh Shalom sung by [family members] OPENING AND CLOSING THE ARK: [family members] HANDING-DOWN CEREMONY: [family members] UNDRESSING AND DRESSING THE TORAH: [family members] TORAH BLESSINGS: [family members] RAISING AND HOLDING THE TORAH: [guest] READERS: [family members and guest] USHERS: [family member and guest] We wish to extend our heartfelt thanks to the many people who have helped us prepare for this important occasion: Rabbi [name] and [names of Hebrew teachers], and all of [student s] Sunday School teachers. In addition, we would like to express our appreciation to family and friends who have traveled many miles to join us in this celebration. DEDICATION: I would like to dedicate my becoming a Bar Mitzvah to my grandfather, [name]. He is always so happy to just talk to me. He has also been there for me my whole life. If anything is ever making me sad, I can talk to him about it. He has talked to me about the importance of education and instilled in me a love of reading. When he was a young man he didn't have the opportunity to become a Bar Mitzvah, so this event is especially important to him. Well Grandpa - thank you so much for everything you ve done for me, this service is for you. 1

About the Service Welcome! It gives us great pleasure to be joined by family and friends to celebrate [name] becoming a Bar Mitzvah. This brief guide is intended to explain some of the customs and objects used in the service and sanctuary. Today [name] is celebrating his Bar Mitzvah, his symbolic passage from childhood to adulthood. Bar Mitzvah is both a serious and happy occasion. [name] has studied long and hard to prepare for today. A Mitzvah is a commandment from God to the Jewish people. A Bar Mitzvah means son of a commandment. [name] is now ready to perform Mitzvot (Commandments) and assume the responsibilities of faith. By becoming a Bar Mitzvah, [name] is following one of God's commandments to young men to lead the community in prayer. As a young adult he is considered ready to perform more Mitzvot and assume the responsibilities of Judaism. He is permitted to read from the Torah, but is also accountable for his actions and moral conduct. Similarly, he is expected to pass on the traditions, practices and teachings of Judaism to his children. The Bar Mitzvah service includes reading from the Torah. The Torah is the central pillar and holiest document in Judaism. The Torah contains the first five books of the Bible: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. The Torah is stored in the Ark. The Torah also contains the early history of the Jewish people as well as the tenets of our faith - the Ten Commandments and laws. Each Torah is handwritten in Hebrew by a scribe writing with a quill and natural ink onto a sheepskin parchment. It is rolled into a double scroll. No vowels or punctuation marks are used in the Torah text. Variations in handwriting as well as the absence of vowels and punctuation marks creates a challenge for the celebrant preparing for and performing his Bar Mitzvah service. The Torah is read through on an annual cycle. Each fall the reading of the Torah commences with Genesis and concludes with the final words of Deuteronomy. Every week all Jewish congregations throughout the world read the exact same portion of the Torah. This is one of the many traditions, which links all Jews. When the Torah is removed from and returned to the Ark, the congregation will stand. [name] and the Rabbi will be joined by his family on the Bima - the special area in front of the Ark at the front of the sanctuary. At the back of the Bima, above the Ark, is the Ner Tamid - the Eternal Light. The Ner Tamid burns continuously in synagogues worldwide. It is a symbol of everlasting faith and the Light of Learning. On the Bima, the Torah is symbolically passed from one generation to the next, symbolizing the link of traditions, duty, compassion, faith, and study. Then [name] will carry the Torah through the sanctuary, demonstrating that he is mature enough to be trusted with the Torah. As a sign of reverence some people may touch the Torah with their prayer books or shawls. After the procession is completed, family members are called up for each Aliyah to recite the Torah blessings. Aliyah means ascent. It is considered an honor to perform an Aliyah. The Aliyah has to be performed by an adult. Our prayer book, the Siddur, is written in both Hebrew and English. Pages are 2

traditionally numbered from right to left, just as Hebrew is read from right to left. The congregation participates in the ceremony by reading aloud the italicized English text. For your convenience, we have prepared a Bar Mitzvah booklet containing all necessary portions of the service and it is numbered from front to back. After the Torah reading is completed, [name] will read from the Haftarah. Haftarah means conclusion. Reading the Haftarah completes the reading of the Bible. At the very end of the service, we will recite the Kiddush - the blessing for the wine, and the Motzi the blessing for the Challah (bread) and then gather at the back of the sanctuary. Please join us for a snack after the blessing. Thank you for sharing this special day with us. [names of family members] 3

Presentation of Tallit [names of father and mother] The Tallit On Sabbath, the most precious of days, our ancestors dressed in their finest clothes as a sign of honor and respect. Each adult also wore a special garment - a Tallit (Ta-leet) or fringed prayer shawl - as they entered the temple to pray. The Tallit is worn by adult Jews to fulfill the commandment, "You shall place fringes on the corners of your garments... so that you will remember my commandments and do them." Each Tallit has 613 knots representing the 613 commandments in the Torah. We present [name] with this Tallit on the occasion of his becoming a Bar Mitzvah. It symbolizes his entrance into the adult Jewish community and links [name] with his heritage and faith. May Your name be blessed forever by every living being. Blessed is the Lord, for the Sabbath and its holiness. Returning the Torah to the Ark All Rise The world is sustained by three things: by truth, by justice, and by peace. When the Torah entered the world, freedom entered it. The whole Torah exists only to establish peace. Its highest teaching is love and kindness. What is hateful to you, do not do to any person. That is the whole Torah. All the rest is commentary. Go and learn it. Those who study Torah are the true guardians of civilization. Honoring one another, doing acts of kindness, and making peace: these are our highest duties. But the study of Torah is equal to them all, because it leads to them all. Let us learn in order to teach; Let us learn in order to do! The Blessing of Memory It is hard to sing of oneness when our world is not complete, when those who once brought wholeness to our life have gone, and naught but memory can fill the emptiness their passing leaves behind. But memory can tell us only what we were, in company with those we loved; it cannot help us find what each of us, alone, must now become. Yet no one is really alone; those who live no more, echo still within our thoughts and words, and what they did is part of what we have become. We do best homage to our dead when we live our lives most fully, even in the shadow of our loss. For each of our lives is worth the life of the whole world; in each one is the breath of the Ultimate One. In affirming the One, we affirm the worth of each one whose life, now ended, brought us closer to the Source of life, in whose unity no one is alone and every life finds purpose. 27
