STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION Take care to guard against all greed, for though one may be rich, one s life does not consist of possessions. LUKE 12:15 The Gospel message today is so contrary to our modern culture where advertising continually tries to convince us that our value lies in the things we possess. Jesus showed us that our true value lies in the way we live our lives. He challenges us to not store up or hoard material possessions, but rather to live a grateful and generous lifestyle. DON T FORGET SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH! As you head off for your summer vacation, please be sure to drop off or mail your parish envelope to the rectory/parish office at 105 Harrison Street, New Milford, NJ 07646 before you go (or even when you return). EIGHTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ~ JULY 31, 2016 FROM THE DESK OF DEACON GEORGE George Montalvo, deacon of Saint Joseph Church and Director of our Religious Education Program, is our guest columnist this week. Msgr. Hubba s column will return on August 14. Becoming parents is one of the greatest experiences a person can have in life. It is a gift but a great responsibility too. In a sense, with parenthood we become co-participants in God s creating effort; we fulfill the instruction to multiply that God gave to our forefathers. Nonetheless, parenthood comes with multilevel responsibilities within the family, the Church, and in society at large. It is our duty to educate our children as good members of our families, support them to succeed in life, teach them the faith, and make sure they become good Catholic-Christians and active citizens as well. The Code of Canon Law, which is the law that rules the Church s activities, speaks of this important role of parents: Parents have the most grave duty and the primary right to take care as best they can for the physical, social, cultural, moral, and religious education of their offspring. In the Catechism of the Catholic Church we are reminded of the wonderful responsibilities and privileges that we have as parents. Through the grace of the sacrament of marriage, parents receive the responsibility and privilege of evangelizing their children. Parents should initiate their children at an early age into the mysteries of the faith of which they are the first heralds for their children. As Christian people, it is at the Sacrament of Baptism that parents promise to educate their children in the practice of the faith. At the same time the celebrant prompts parents of their duty to teach their children to keep God s commandments, and to love God and neighbor. The celebrant plainly asks parents, Do you clearly understand what you are undertaking? (Do we really?) Overall, Christian parents assume a great and important responsibility: educate their children to become disciples of Jesus Christ in the Catholic tradition in this society here and now. It is a wonderful challenge, but not an easy one, is it? There are a few important aspects derived from this promise at Baptism: 1. We are called as family to help our children know God, but most of all to love Him and to build a personal relationship with God as father and Jesus (continued above) 3 Christ as brother someone who is close and always present. This is only possible when faith is the priority in families and, as such, is shown by praying together, regularly attending the Eucharist, and speaking about faith at home. 2. We are called as family to participate as an active member of our faith community. The parish community is our spiritual family that helps to support and encourage us in our faith journey, even in those difficult moments. This is achieved when families meet together, participate in a ministry, bring their children to the weekend Eucharist, to the Religious Education Program, attend retreats and other parish-based activities. 3. We are called to make disciples, which is bringing our faith to the streets and to our places of work and schools. Even though it may not be possible at all times to do by word freely or openly (because we might run into problems), we can always proclaim the Good News by witnessing to it through the way we live. Jesus commanded his disciples at the end of his earthly life: Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. (Mt. 28: 19-21) This commandment applies to every baptized person. It is our mission to make disciples for our Lord Jesus Christ. But what is a disciple? According to the Webster Dictionary, a disciple is someone who accepts and helps to spread the teachings of a famous person. For us, being a disciple also includes witnessing to the teachings of Jesus Christ by living our lives in accordance with his Word. Discipleship begins at home and no one can take the place of the parents in instilling it in their children. There are no more powerful examples than when a father teaches his children how to speak to God, when a mother teaches the devotion to Mary, or, despite their busy schedules, families come to Mass every weekend and teach children that Faith is a priority and that God always fits into their busy schedules. Deacon George Montalvo
