This court case is a major polarizing issue. It can easily bring contempt into one s heart. But this does not necessarily have to be so. People, often, demonize those on the opposite side of the abortion issue. However, as Christians, we should strive away from this tendency. This divisive act only serves to further separate us as God s creation. Instead, we should look to be compassionate to others and in love discuss our position. There are two realities that we, as Catholics and even more broadly disciples of Christ, should have in our mind when dealing with abortion. First, every life is sacred and has within itself dignity. Second, the dignity of every human being that makes our life sacred is the very creation in the image and likeness of God. Pro-lifers uphold this dignity in the unborn child and stand in defense of the child s life. On the contrary, these same lovers of life sometimes ignore the dignity of the pro-choicer because the pro-choicer holds a view of allowing the heinous act of abortion. If we take a moment to uphold the very dignity we defend in the unborn child in the pro-choicer, then maybe we will change how we discuss the issue with them. We must work at convincing abortion supporters, through loving conversation, of the dignity of the human life in the womb all the while remembering that this person is also made in the image and likeness of God. In this way, we better treat them as Jesus would, and therefore, act in accord with His call to love. Let us pray this month for all those affected by abortion: the unborn child, his/her parents and family, pro-life advocates, as well as, the doctors, nurses, and supports of abortion. May God bless us all. REMEMBER IN PRAYER Pray For The Sick We are going to update the prayer list. Please call the rectory at 543-3770 and give the name of your loved one who is seriously ill and in need of our prayer. The list will be deleted every four months and a new list will be started, in order to keep the list updated. 3. NEXT SUNDAY S READINGS JANUARY 21, 2018 FIRST READING - 1 Samuel 3:3-10,19 The word of the LORD came to Jonah, saying: "Set out for the great city of Nineveh, and announce to it the message that I will tell you." So Jonah made ready and went to Nineveh, according to the LORD'S bidding. Now Nineveh was an enormously large city; it took three days to go through it. Jonah began his journey through the city, and had gone but a single day's walk announcing, "Forty days more and Nineveh shall be destroyed, " when the people of Nineveh believed God; they proclaimed a fast and all of them, great and small, put on sackcloth. When God saw by their actions how they turned from their evil way, he repented of the evil that he had threatened to do to them; he did not carry it out. SECOND READING - 1 Corinthians 6:13-15,17-20 I tell you, brothers and sisters, the time is running out. From now on, let those having wives act as not having them, those weeping as not weeping, those rejoicing as not rejoicing, those buying as not owning, those using the world as not using it fully. For the world in its present form is passing away. GOSPEL - John 35-42 After John had been arrested, Jesus came to Galilee proclaiming the gospel of God: "This is the time of fulfillment. The kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel." As he passed by the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting their nets into the sea; they were fishermen. Jesus said to them, "Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men." Then they abandoned their nets and followed him. He walked along a little farther and saw James, the son of Zebedee, and his brother John. They too were in a boat mending their nets. Then he called them. So they left their father Zebedee in the boat along with the hired men and followed him. Key Scriptural Passage: They said to him, Rabbi (which translated means Teacher), where are you staying? He said to them, Come and see. They came and saw where he was staying, and they remained with him that day. (John 1:38-39) \ Questions for Discussion: Adult: What qualities do you have that would cause others to recognize you as a disciple of Jesus? Child: What does it take to be a follower of Jesus? Readings For The Week Monday...1 Sm 15:16-23/Mk 2:18-22 Tuesday. 1 Sm 16:1-13/Mk 2:23-28 Wednesday..Eph 6:10-13,18/Mt 19:16-26 Thursday. 1 Sm 18:6-9,19:1-7/Mk 3:7-12 Friday..1 Sm 24:3-21/Mk 3:13-19 Saturday..2 Sm 1:1-4,11-12,/Mk 3:20-21 St. Philip Youth Fried Chicken Dinner St. Philip Youth will sponsor their annual fried chicken dinner and drawing Sunday, Jan. 14, 2018, at 11:00 a.m. with plates to go only at the Columbus Club Hall. Pro-Life Corner...Did you know that since 1973 when abortion was decriminalized in the US over 60 million babies have been killed in their mother s womb? This is equal to the population of a country the size of Italy! Help end abortion. The Pope Speaks... Francis of Assisi tells us we should work to build peace. But there is no true peace without truth! There cannot be true peace if everyone is his own criterion, if everyone can always claim exclusively his own rights, without at the same time caring for the good of others, of everyone on the basis of the nature that united every human being on this earth.
