fàa `tüà{t fàa ]ÉáxÑ{ 2nd Sunday in Ordinary Time January 20, 2013 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK By Fr. Terry Kerner Last Sunday, we selected the membership for the new Parish Pastoral Council. Six seats were filled, three from each of our existing parishes. We are blessed to have excellent candidates from each parish. On every parishioner s behalf, I want to thank the eleven men and women who volunteered to serve. The following is the membership of the new Pastoral Council: One Year Term Two Year Term Three Year Term Lynn Downey Janeen Bodary Patricia Ayland Matt Zipple Patricia Urban Michael Burke Alternates Matt Straley Virginia Blow Larry Kosiba Joe Walsh Theresa Skora Also serving on the council is Brian Harris, this year s Chair of the Finance Council. The new members will be introduced to the current Council on January 22nd at the regular Joint Pastoral Council meeting. Our Congratulations to all our term holders and alternates. There is plenty of work to go around for everyone and I appreciate all who are willing to help. One of the priorities of our parish is to promote Catholic education for all ages. A critical segment of our parish population is, of course, our youngsters! Parents have the responsibility to teach and train their children in the practice of their Faith. This is an awesome privilege as well as a challenge. But they have help from the parish. Both in the Religious Education program and in our neighboring Catholic elementary schools, the Church and our parishes offer structured ways of teaching and conveying the Faith. This weekend we want to focus on our two neighboring and excellent Catholic Schools. Both St. Sebastian and Sacred Heart Schools have Open Houses next Sunday, January 27th. Sacred Heart preschool, kindergarten and first grade have Open House on Tuesday, January 22nd. Parents, grandparents and interested parishioners are welcome. I encourage all to take time to learn more about these precious gifts in our community. To help us begin, two parish families with children attending Sacred Heart School will be speaking at our Masses. St. Sebastian has also included a flyer in our bulletin. Let us all pray and support young families and all our parish children in their learning the ways of Christ! Have a great week.

Page 2 St. Martha, Dearborn - St. Joseph, Dearborn NEWS MEN S CLUB MEETING A special meeting for the Men s Club is scheduled for Wednesday, January 23rd at 7:30 PM at St. Martha. All men from both parishes are encouraged to attend. K OF C The Knights of Columbus will celebrate a Corporate Communion at St. Joseph Church, January 27th, at the 9:00 AM Mass. All are invited to attend and men interested in Knight membership are encouraged to speak to other members on the process. FOOD DRIVE Please continue to support our food drive this weekend. Our parish food collections are every 3rd Sunday and we serve the food pantry at Our Lady of the Angels in Taylor. Please be as generous as you are able. Thank you. OUR LADY OF THE ANGELS FOOD PANTRY To the Women of St. Martha/St. Joseph, Thank you for the generous contribution of food donated to Our Lady of the Angels Food Pantry on behalf of the women of St. Martha/St. Joseph Catholic Church. The kindness and generosity demonstrated by your group enables us to provide nourishing food to those who come to our pantry for help so they can prepare healthy meals for their families. Your care and concern are greatly appreciated. Thank you for being a partner in feeding those in need. God Bless You, Marvel Boyd, Food Pantry director FROM THE ARCHDIOCESE The Detroit Archdiocese, like many dioceses across the country, is encouraging medically sound practices to help mitigate the potential spread of flu viruses. Our recommendations are in line with what you ve likely seen and heard from media outlets in recent days: practicing common sense, covering your mouth should you need to sneeze or cough, and staying home if you are sick. As it related to gatherings in church, such as a Mass, we remind you that it is perfectly acceptable to forego a handshake at the Sign of Peace, as well as to drink from the common cup at communion. Please keep in your prayers those who are ill with the flu, and those health care professionals who tend to the ill. St. Martha, Dearborn - St. Joseph, Dearborn MORE NEWS A PRAYER FOR INAUGURATION DAY God most holy, who has blessed our nation with freedom, look now with kindness on our president as he takes up the duties of his office this day. Give him wisdom that he may be guided by your law. Help him to work for justice so that our land may grow and prosper in accord with your will. Give him courage so that he may not grow faint before the powers of darkness but will stand firm to protect the innocent and be ready to help those who are in need. May he govern wisely and work with other elected officials to form a nation that is responsive to its citizens and generous to those who suffer, at home and abroad, always conscious of your own providence, which has blessed us with such abundance. Keep him safe from harm and protect us all so that we might serve you in holiness and truth. Amen. KNIGHTS NEWS 5TH ANNUAL WILD GAME DINNER Sunday, January 27th, 2013. IRA CHARITABLE ROLLOVER FOR 2012 & 2013 With the recent fiscal cliff tax rate legislation, congress extended the IRA charitable rollover for calendar years 2012 and 2013. Parishioners age 70-and-half and older thus have an excellent opportunity to make significant gifts to the Church in 2013, and elect to have some gifts made in January 2013 treated for tax purposes as made in 2012. This extension of the tax law allows individuals who have reached the age of 70-and-a-half or older to make distributions from their IRA directly to qualified charities, including the church. These distributions are excluded from taxable income. DIVINE CHILD OPEN HOUSE Divine Child Catholic schools are having their annual Winter Open House for prospective students on Sunday, February 10, 2013. Page 4 St. Martha, Dearborn - St. Joseph, Dearborn ST. KATERI TEKAKWITHA History of the Shrine The place where Kateri lived for much of her life, Caughnawaga, near the village of Fonda, New York, has been marked since 1938 by the Fonda Memorial of Catherine Tekakwitha. The Indian village site was discovered in 1950, a Holy Year, by Father Thomas Grassman, a Conventual Franciscan Friar and Founder of the shrine. In that year, Father Thomas unearthed the postmolds where the stockade around the Indian Settlement at Fonda had been, and between then and 1957, with the help of numerous volunteers excavated the rest of the site. Toda, it is the only completely excavated Iroquois Indian village in the country. Visitors to the village, which sits on a hill above the Mohawk- Caughnawaga museum and the shrine chapel, can see clearly the outlines of the twelve longhouses and stockade which existed there 300 year age. The museum and chapel are located a quarter mile west of Fonda, housed in a 200 year-old barn renovated in 1938 under Father Thomas Grassman s direction. The upper floor commemorating the chapel in which Saint Kateri was baptized, and the lower floor museum features an impressive display of Amerindian artifacts from all the Americas, but particularly from the Iroquois country. The Franciscan Friars took over the shrine grounds in l938, 12 years prior to the first excavation efforts at the village on the hill. Father Thomas was the first director and it was he who saw to the shrine s growth until his death in 1970. Though the Tekakwitha location has a long history, it was not actually a shrine to the Indian maiden until 1980 when Kateri was declared Blessed by Pope John Paul II on June 22nd. Only then could she officially be venerated. Canonized to Sainthood on October 21, 2012, Saint Kateri is patroness of peace and ecology.
