Parish Parking Most of us who own a car and live in the city are well aware of how difficult it is to find convenient parking around the church, especially on weekends for Sunday Mass, and during the week for meetings and other special events. For a city parish with no parking lot of its own, parking is and, probably always will be, an issue, because today, as with any parish in northern New Jersey, be it urban or suburban, availability of parking directly impacts the number of people who come to worship on Sundays, at Christmas time and during the Eastertide. This is why, when I came to Saint Anne two years ago, I refrained from discouraging certain unorthodox parking practices in and around church property, in the hopes that, eventually, a viable solution would present itself. Unfortunately, this has, as yet, not happened, while the parking situation has become increasingly alarming. The garages are routinely blocked, not just on Saturdays and Sundays for weekend Masses and events, but also on mornings during the weekday Masses and on nights when there are meetings and other activities. The sidewalk on Kennedy Boulevard is at times so congested with vehicles that pedestrians have complained of not having enough room to navigate a stroller through the maze. On Sundays especially, the entrance to the makeshift parking lot behind the convent is frequently blocked by cars parked in the driveway, even when there are still available spots, the driver seemingly deciding not to go in any further to even check. The situation has moved from being frustrating to dangerous - How are first responders expected to gain access to the church in case of fire or some other emergency? One Saturday night at the7pm Mass, a pregnant mother who was hemorrhaging had to be lifted over several parked vehicles - on the sidewalk, in order to get to the ambulance that was waiting to take her to the emergency room. When Sunday School is in session, the sidewalk becomes a danger to little children, too full of life to stand still, too small to be picked up on rearview mirrors, too easy to go unnoticed by a careless moment behind the wheel or by a mass-goer in a hurry to leave. I do not want to belabor the point. For many, I know that I am stating the obvious; over the past two years concerned parishioners have come to me to voice their vexation and alarm with the parking situation, some have even pointed out a city ordinance prohibiting the blocking of a driveway, even when it is your own. As a steward of the parish, I take full responsibility for not addressing the situation sooner, hoping, as mentioned before, that a viable solution would present itself, mainly because of the connection between parking and church attendance. However, with no solution yet in sight, action must be taken to rein in the parking situation, lest I be justly accused of not taking my responsibility as steward seriously and, even more importantly, before an accident that could ve been avoided, occurs. With this in mind, I ask your cooperation in keeping the driveways of both convent and rectory, and the adjacent sidewalk on Kennedy Boulevard, clear of all vehicular traffic. I know that this will be difficult for some, especially those who travel great distances to worship at Saint Anne, and I assure you that a diligent search continues for a temporary alternative, if not a permanent solution, to our parking woes. In turn, I ask that if anyone has constructive ideas of how we might alleviate the situation, either in the short or long term; if anyone knows of local businesses or organizations with parking lots of their own, no matter how small, that might be available to us on Sundays and holidays, please let me know. In the meantime, there are things that most of us can do to help alleviate the situation. If you live within a short distance from the parish, please consider walking to church. If possible, car pool with a neighbor, your spouse, or other family members. Both Fr. John and I have found that there are usually some spots available on Paterson Street, the side street obliquely opposite the rectory. If there are other streets where parking is relatively easy to find on Sundays, please spread the word. An effort is underway to creating or permanently designating certain spots as Handicap Parking ; until that happens, we will do our best to reserve certain areas, that do not obstruct access to or egress from the driveways, as unofficial handicap parking areas. We will also try our best to manage the parking situation with contractors and delivery vans during regular business hours, especially when school is in session, to make the sidewalk more pedestrian friendly, but I ask your patience and understanding in the matter - sometimes, especially on days when there is street cleaning, it is near impossible to find a parking spot on the street that is near enough for contractors to carry and retrieve their equipment. We will try to be as responsive and responsible as we can in such cases. In the interest of informing as many parishioners and friends of Saint Anne as possible, this letter will run in the bulletin for the next two to three weeks, space providing, but I ask for your assistance in helping to spread the word to those who may not come to Mass here every Sunday, or who may not read the bulletin on a regular basis. Thank you and may God bless us all. 4
