Ahava B Shem Yeshua Love In The Name of Jesus Monthly Newsletter Volume 4, Issue 2 December 2017 From Our Messianic Leader.. Chanukah On December 13 th, Kislev 25 on the Jewish calendar, we will begin the celebration of the Festival of Light Chanukah. Yeshua, our Master, told His disciples, I am the light of the world. In Matthew 5:14-16 He said; You are the light of the world Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works (mitzvot), and glorify your Father who is in heaven. It is traditional to place the Chanukah menorah (or chanukiah) in a window so that its light radiates outward and lights up the darkness of the outside world. So it can be with us. The celebration of Chanukah this and every year is relevant and very important for all Believers. It is the story of a persistent zeal for Yeshua, the Living Torah, a devotion to God s commandments, and the will to stand up for what is right and holy (kadosh). It is the story of the rededication of God s Temple and His people. As such, it is an very important part of the history of who we are as Messianic believers. Therefore, we at Ahava B Shem Yeshua --- Love in the Name of Jesus, pray that this Chanukah season will find the light of the Gospel burning ever brighter within you. May the Shamash candle (servant candle) of Heaven catch light in your heart for Torah, good works (mitzvot), and devotion to Him. May the light of Yeshua pour forth from within each one of us as we set about to lighten the darkness. Happy Chanukah! Page 6 Ahava B Shem Yeshua MINISTRY UPDATES Ahava Children s Ministry The sign up sheet for December is back in the classroom/nursery area on the wall. Teachers and helpers can sign themselves up for dates that work for them. It will cover 2 months at a time. Teachers will be planning their own lessons, and helpers as usual will assist the teacher. In the storage room in the back of the sanctuary, there is a curriculum box for books and lessons, or you can use resources that you have. More teachers are needed. There should be a minimum of one adult in the back (18 or over) but preferably 2 adults should sign up at a time. Please talk to Dee Rodriguez if you would like to serve as a teacher for the first time, or if you would be willing to serve as the new Shabbat School leader. For those who sign up for Shabbat School, on the Shabbat you are in the classroom, please let the people serving in the sound booth know and they can make you a copy of the message. Davidic Dance Ministry We have made some changes to the dance ministry: Is. 52:7 "How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of the messenger of good tidings, that announces peace and announces salvation, that says unto Zion: "Your Elohim reigns!" Davidic Dance at Ahava is worshiping Adonai with sacred reverence to Him. Therefore, there must be order and understanding when we worship through dance. Seasoned worship dancers may join the Davidic Dance circle after speaking to Daniele and Julia, our dance leaders and demonstrating basic core steps. Appropriate dance attire is skirts and dresses below the knee and tops should be covered shoulders... nothing see through. Pants, tank tops and boots will not be permitted. Our focus is to please Elohim and not man. The Hora Dance is for everyone and we encourage all to participate and celebrate in this dance. The dance for He Shall Reign is for everyone as well! Beginning dance steps are offered after Oneg on the first and second Sabbaths of the month at 1:15 for 30 minutes. The Shabbat Medley dance will be taught during this time. All who learn it can then participate in the Shabbat Medley dance to bring in the Sabbath Service. Thank you for your understanding and we ask that you pray that Elohim be exalted through the dance ministry as it is a powerful weapon against the enemy. Volume 4, Issue 2 Page 7 MESSIANIC 101 Terms & Definitions CHANUKAH FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS, FEAST OF DEDICATION December 13th, 2017 Wednesday (1st Candle is lit Tuesday December 12th at evening) through December 20th, 2017 Wednesday John 10:22-23 Then came Hanukkah; it was winter in Jerusalem. Yeshua was walking in the Temple around Solomon s Colonnade. Then the Judean leaders surrounded Him, saying, how long will You hold us in suspense? If You are the Messiah, tell us outright! (TLV). Chanukah commemorates the Maccabean revolt against the Seleucid Empire and the rededication of the Holy Temple (the second Temple). Once the Temple was reclaimed the Jewish people wished to relight the Temple Menorah, unfortunately there was only enough oil to last one day. They needed eight days to procure additional pure oil. Miraculously this one day supply of oil lasted eight days! This is the miracle we celebrate. THE CHANUKIAH (THE CHANUKAH MENORAH) The Chanukiah is the special 9 candle holder menorah that is used for Chanukah. The Chanukiah is placed at a window in front of the home. Matthew 5:14-16 You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a basket. Instead, they put it on a lampstand so it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men so they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven. TLV. The Chanukiah has eight holders for either candles or oil, and one holder set apart. These candles, or oil, should burn for 30 minutes on the week nights and one and one half hours on Friday night, or the Shabbat. The candle that is set apart (the Shamash, or servant candle, is used to light all the other candles. The candles are placed in the candle holders right to left, but lit left to right. The first candle is lit on the Erev of Chanukah, this year it is Tuesday, December 12th at sundown. Place one candle in the Shamash holder and one candle on the first candle holder on the right. Light the Shamash candle, then use it each night to light the other candles. Recite the following blessing: Ba-ruch A-tah Ado-nai E-lo-he-nu Me-lech ha-olam a-sher ki-de-sha-nu be-mitz-vo-tav ve-tzi-va-nu le-had-lik ner Cha-nu-kah. Ba-ruch A-tah Ado-nai E-lo-he-nu Me-lech Ha-olam she-a-sa ni-sim la-avo-te-nu ba-ya-mim ha-hem bi-zman ha-zeh. Blessed are You, Lord our G d, King of the universe, who has sanctified us with His commandments, and commanded us to kindle the Chanukah light. Blessed are You, Lord our G d, King of the universe, who performed miracles for our forefathers in those days, at this time. On the first night add this blessing: Ba-ruch A-tah Ado-nai E-lo-he-nu Me-lech Ha-olam she-heche-ya-nu ve-ki-yi-ma-nu ve-higi-a-nu liz-man ha-zeh. Blessed are You, Lord our G d, King of the universe, who has granted us life, sustained us, and enabled us to reach this occasion. After the Chanukiah is lit, enjoy it s light. Tell stories of what Chanukah means. Enjoy fried foods like donuts and latkes. Play a game of driedel. Remember the miracles that Adonai has done in your life, the times He sustained you. John 8:12 Yeshua spoke to them again, saying, I am the light of the world. The one who follows Me will no longer walk in darkness, but will have the light of life. (TLV). John 1:5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overpowered it (TLV).
