January 28-29, 2017 Jesus is baptized. Matthew 3:13-17; Matthew 4:18-22 Jesus was baptized and showed people how to follow him. Connect Time (15 minutes): Five minutes after the service begins, split kids into groups and begin their activity. Large Group (30 minutes): Begin 20 minutes after the service starts. Model what it looks like to be engaged in large group. Small Group (15 minutes): Keep kids in small groups until parents arrive. If you all have extra time at the end, you can review the video and songs together. Remind kids to invite their friends to the Super Bowl service next weekend! We re having our own epic service in Kids Club, designed just for them. Remind parents to encourage kids to invite their friends to Kids Club next weekend for Super Bowl Weekend! Today, we re going to hear about how God revealed that Jesus was the Rescuer when he was baptized. Then Jesus chose 12 friends to follow him. God loves it when we follow Jesus too!

GOAL: Connect Time is all about engaging kids in an activity that allows them to connect with each other right away while simultaneously piquing their curiosity for Large Group and preparing their minds for what they re going to hear. MY FAVORITE THINGS Give each kid a piece of paper with 4 corners and set out markers. Choose a leader to call out the following prompts, and give kids 1-2 minutes to draw each thing in one of the 4 corners: Draw your favorite animal Draw your favorite food Draw your favorite toy Draw your favorite person After kids are finished drawing their 4 things, tell them to find a friend and share with them! Tell each other what your favorites are, and why you like them, etc. For younger kids, they can focus on just sharing what their favorites are. For older kids, they can focus on what and why they have those favorites, etc. Adapt to fit the needs of your group! TALK ABOUT IT What new things did you learn about your partner? What ways do we get to know people better? Before you go to Large Group, you can ask kids how their week went. You can also remind kids of the expectations for Large Group behavior: (1) be kind, (2) listen when somebody speaks, and (3) follow the leader s instructions.

Goal: Kids will (1) retell the story of Jesus getting baptized, with an emphasis on God revealing that he s the Rescuer, and (2) recognize that God wants us to follow him. Why? Baptism is all about following Jesus, and it s important to understand WHY we do it, and HOW we do it! Tip: There are two parts to today s small group activity, so make sure to leave a few minutes at the end to hand out the invitations and let kids write a name and decorate. REVIEW THE STORY 1. What did Jesus do when he wanted people to start following him? (He got baptized.) 2. Why do we get baptized? (To show that we want to follow Jesus.) 3. What did God do when Jesus got baptized? (Sent a dove and announced that Jesus was his son, and that he loved him! He showed the world that Jesus is the Rescuer.) 4. Who did Jesus choose to follow him? (The 12 disciples.) 5. Who else can follow Jesus? (Everyone!) MAKE IT PERSONAL Remind kids of what God said when Jesus was baptized: Matthew 3:17: A voice from heaven said, This is my Son, and I love him. I am very pleased with him. (Break it up in short phrases and have kids repeat after you.) Give each kid 1 piece of blue paper and 1 piece of white chalk. Have them trace their hands with the white chalk and color it in. (It ll be a bit messy!) They can also make beaks at the end of the thumb, add an eye, and create rays of light (heaven breaking through!), or anything else they want! Remind kids that God wants us to FOLLOW his son, the Rescuer! Here s an example: INVITATION ACTIVITY Give each kid 1 invitation and tell them to write the name of 1 friend on it. They can give this invitation to that friend, and invite them to come to Kids Club for Superbowl Weekend! (Continued on next page.)

Extra time? Do a coloring sheet. Then, practice following with a game of Simon Says!

Small Group is a little longer today, so make sure not to run too long with the Large Group script. WELCOME AND INTRO Main Goal: Review Connect Time and introduce the lesson. Notes: There s no link available for today s video, but it will be all about Jesus baptism, and how it was God s way of announcing Jesus as the Rescuer! *Click to play intro music. Welcome: Hey everybody, welcome to Kids Club! It s great to see you here! Ask: Did you have fun coming up with all your favorites? (Let kids respond.) Did you get to know someone and learn what their favorites were? (Let kids respond.) Does anybody want to share something new that you learned about your partner? (Let several kids share.) Say: That game was a fun way to get to know someone and learn what their favorite things are! Today, we re going to hear more about how people first got to know someone really special...jesus! Say: First, let s get to know each other a little better right now. I m going to give you a choice between two things, and you ll raise your hand to show which one you like better! (Image: Cats or dogs) Who likes cats better? (Let kids respond.) Who likes dogs better? (Let kids respond.) (Image: Pizza or macaroni and cheese) Who prefers pizza? (Let kids respond.) Who prefers macaroni and cheese? (Let kids respond.) (Image: Yellow or green) Who likes yellow more? (Let kids respond.) Who likes green more? (Let kids respond.)

GETTING TO KNOW JESUS Main Goal: Understand what it would be like to find out that Jesus was the Rescuer! Say: Good job everybody! I wonder how Jesus would have answered those questions! We may not find THAT out, but we WILL find out some other really important things about him in today s story. Say: We re going to hear about how a lot of people got to know Jesus and how they knew he was God s Son and the Rescuer they had been waiting for! Ask: If you lived back then, and you found out Jesus was the Rescuer, would you be excited? (Let kids respond.) Me too! And would you follow Him? (Let kids respond.) I bet so! And so did all the people who got to know him. Say: The first time people got to know Jesus was when he came to earth as a baby at Christmas. And as he got older, he showed us how God likes to do amazing miracles, like turn water into wine and heal sick people. Jesus did miracles to show us that in God s Kingdom, there s always a reason to celebrate and there s no sickness or sadness or meanness or death! JESUS IS BAPTIZED Main Goal: Understand what it means to be baptized, and what happened when Jesus himself did it! THE DISCIPLES FOLLOW JESUS Say: But Jesus was also here so that people would follow him. And when Jesus was ready for people to follow him, the very FIRST thing Jesus did was get baptized. Ask: Does anybody know what it means to be baptized? (Let kids respond.) Yep, it s when we decide to show everyone that we re ready to follow Jesus! And Jesus wanted to show the world that he was the Rescuer they were waiting for, so he got baptized too. Say: We re going to watch a video about what happened when Jesus was baptized. As we watch, see if you can figure out how people got to know who Jesus was (and is!): Video: Jesus Storybook Bible / Heaven Breaks Through Ask: Wow! When Jesus got baptized, what happened? (Let kids respond.) That s right: God sent the Holy Spirit to earth like a dove! And God said, This is my son, and I love him. I am very pleased with him. It was like heaven opened up and God announced that Jesus is the Rescuer. (Image: 12 disciples) The best part is, after Jesus got baptized, people realized he was the Rescuer and started following him. He even chose 12 special friends to follow him. Those people were called disciples. Can you guys say disciples? (Let kids say it.)

JESUS WANTS EVERYONE TO FOLLOW HIM Main Goal: Demonstrate how Jesus wants EVERYONE to follow him, no matter who they are! RESPONSE TIME Main Goal: Give kids a chance to actively respond to what they ve heard today. Say: The disciples job was to follow Jesus and show other people how to follow Jesus. Then THOSE people could show other people, and they could show other people, and they could show other people, and on and on and on! Say: Let s take a quick look at how that could work. I need ONE person (Choose one.) OK, pretend I showed you how to follow Jesus. Now, you choose two people. (Let the kid choose.) You showed them how to follow Jesus. Then those two both showed two more people, so I need four more people up here (Choose four kids.) Say: Wow, it s getting crowded, isn t it? Here s the thing: Jesus wants us to keep showing people how to follow him until EVERYBODY is following Jesus! Thanks guys! (Let kids sit back down.) Say: You know what is the coolest part about Jesus wanting the whole world to follow him and get to know him better? He wants US to help Him to do it! Let s think of some ways we can help others follow Jesus right now. (Image: Showing love) Showing love and being kind to people. Is that a good way to help them know about Jesus? (Let kids respond: Yes!) Ask: How about forgiving people who aren t nice to us, is that a good way to help people follow Jesus? (Let kids respond: Yes!) Let s watch this short video and see! Video: Ask Shrimpita Clip / Forgiveness Ask: Okay, last one. How about inviting our friends to Kids Club. Is that a good way to help them follow Jesus and get closer to him? (Let kids respond: Yes!) Let s watch another short video to remind us how fun it is in Kids Club! Video: We Are Crossroads Kids Club Say: These are all great ways to help our friends follow Jesus, and they re all things that WE can do, even as kids! Next week is the perfect time to invite a friend to come to Kids Club because it s our super-awesome, extra-amazing, totally fun Super Bowl Weekend! Say: We have some really great things planned for next week, and it s the perfect time to bring a new friend! So right now, I want you to close your eyes tight. (Pause.) Now think really hard about one friend who doesn t know Jesus yet, or who doesn t get to come to a place like Kids Club. (Pause.)

RESPONSE TIME (Cont.) Main Goal: Give kids a chance to actively respond to what they ve heard today. PRAYER AND WORSHIP Main Goal: Close the lesson with prayer and worship. Say: Okay, have you got someone in your head? (Pause.) Awesome! Now your job this week is to invite that friend to the Super Bowl service. It s gonna be great and they ll get to hear all about how much Jesus loves them, and how they can follow him. Say: We re going to pray now, and ask Jesus to help us follow him. It s not always easy, but we can always go to him when we need help! Pray: Dear Jesus, thank you rescuing us. We re so glad we get to follow you, and please help us to act just like you would. Help us to invite our friends to Kids Club this week. We love you, Amen! Set up worship: So let s all follow Jesus together by praising him and thanking him for being the Rescuer.
