ST. JOAN OF ARC TRANSFORM ME O LORD! APRIL 15TH, 2018 Sunday Readings The first reading, taken from the Acts of the Apostles 3:13-15, 17-19, relates the story of Peter and John's meeting with a man crippled from birth who asked them for alms. Peter said he had neither gold nor silver, but he would give him something better and proceeded to heal him. The second reading is from the first Letter of John 2:1-5. In this extract the Apostle is urging his fellow -Christians to avoid sin. If they should sin, they are to admit their fault and seek pardon, which will be given in abundance. He has in mind the Gnostic heretics of the time who did not keep God's commandments and yet held that they were not sinning by violating them. John exhorts Christians not to imitate these heretics. The Gospel is from St. Luke 24:35-48. Our Lord's glorious resurrection is the crowning miracle of his sojourn on earth among men. It is the foundation and cornerstone of our Christian religion. His death on Calvary proved that he was really human; his resurrection proved he was also divine. During his public life he had claimed to be God. Had that claim been untrue God the Father could not have raised him from the dead. By his death he made atonement for the sins of the world "he nailed them to the tree of the cross"; by his resurrection he opened the gates of death for all men and made them heirs to the eternal life. While serving in India as a schoolteacher, one day she looked a poor person in the face who was begging her for help. She saw Christ looking back at her. The rest is history. She left her easy life as a teacher and started her own order, the Missionaries of Charity, in 1950. It is now active in 133 countries worldwide! She was probably the greatest saint of the 20th Century. Just about everyone puts her on a pedestal to admire. But rather than just admiring her, maybe we could all try to imitate her, in whatever way is available to us in our current state of life. I am a little pencil in the hand of a writing God who is sending a love letter to the world. Mother Teresa Quotes catholic bible 101.com 3-951

GOD MUST BE SERVED FIRST Gospel Reading Luke 24:35-48 On the third Sunday of Easter, we continue to hear Gospel accounts of Jesus appearances to his disciples following his Resurrection. Today s reading, taken from the Gospel of Luke, follows immediately after the report of Jesus' appearance to his disciples on the road to Emmaus. This is the event being recounted by the disciples in the opening verse of today s Gospel. Consistently in the reports of Jesus post- Resurrection appearances, Jesus greets his disciples with the words, Peace be with you. This is a most appropriate greeting. The disciples have witnessed the death of someone they loved, and they now fear for their own lives as well. Peace is what they need more than anything else. Jesus often connects this greeting of peace with another gift forgiveness. In today s Gospel, this connection is made in the final verses. Even as they hear Jesus greeting of peace, the disciples are startled and terrified. They are uncertain about what to make of the figure before them and, quite understandably, they mistake Jesus for a ghost. Yet the figure before them is not a ghost; Jesus invites them to experience his resurrected body with their senses, to look and to touch. The figure before them is flesh and bone, still bearing the marks of crucifixion. Although the disciples cannot forget his suffering and death, peace begins to take root in their hearts, as their fears turn to joy and amazement. As further proof of his identity and of his resurrected body, Jesus eats with his disciples. The disciples have known Jesus best through the meals that he has shared with them. Descriptions of these meals are a defining element of Luke s Gospel. By eating with his disciples after his Resurrection, Jesus recalls all these meals, and most importantly, he recalls the Last Supper. Luke s report of the Last Supper and the meals that Jesus shared after his Resurrection unveil for us the significance of the Eucharist. Having shared a meal with his disciples, Jesus now uncovers for them the significance of what was written about him in the Scriptures. So, too, our celebration of the Mass is an encounter with Jesus, through the Word and the Sacrament of the Eucharist. As Jesus commissions his disciples to be witnesses to what Scriptures foretold, our celebration of the Eucharist commissions us. Like the disciples, we are sent to announce the good news of Jesus forgiveness of sins. ST. JOAN OF ARC GHANAIAN COMMUNITY 3rd SUNDAY OF EASTER Theme: Be true witnesses to Christ s Resurrection The resurrection of Christ had filled the apostles with immense power to preach and do miracles in the name of Jesus. When the high priests got to know of it, they were called to put a stop to their activities. The apostles were whipped and told not to mention the name of Jesus again. As soon as they left the leaders, they were seen filling Jerusalem with their teachings. They could not stop the apostles from witnessing to the resurrection. Nothing should stop you and I from witnessing to the resurrection of our Lord. That s our victory. His victory is our victory, so I say victoire, victoire, victoire. His Glory is shown among all nations and we have a unique role to play in testifying to the many people by our way of life. My dear people of God, like the apostles we are sometimes confronted with the issues of obeying God or man. Men teach that contraception, abortion, euthanasia, capital punishment, etc, are the key to a better society or world. However these tenets of men are contrary to the right to live which is enshrined in the Decalogue. We Catholics must stand up and obey the command of God and not man. Like the apostles, in trying to obey God, we might suffer humiliation but let us be happy if we are humiliated for the sake of righteousness; the kingdom of God is ours. As we continue to celebrate this victory of Christ, join me in welcoming the Good Shepard of the Diocese, His Excellency, the Most Rev. Robert J. McManus. It is with deep joy and gratitude that we have His Lordship celebrate the Holy Mass with us and to receive the Apostolic blessings. His Lordship is the epitome of a true witness of Christ on earth and for us, as an African ministry in the Diocese of Worcester, he is a blessing to us. I cannot recount the many good things his kind office has done for us since establishing the office of the African Ministry in the Diocese. My beloved people of God join me again in congratulating our bishop for 40 years of true and divine priestly calling and service. My Lord, we as an African Ministry of Joan of Arc, St. Andrew the Apostles, Cathedral of St. Paul, and St. Anthony of Padua wish you well and pray for strength and God s protection for you and the Diocese of Worcester.
