The Deacon s Corner celebrating 50 years of the diaconate 1968 2018 Dear Folks, After being literally decades away from sitting in a classroom and doing all that is involved with it studying, doing term papers (anyone remember Turabian?), and taking tests, written and oral I returned to the classroom a few years ago to study at the seminary to prepare for the diaconate. There were many things to absorb while trying to maintain a family life and demands at work. In the course of doing school work, many times a light bulb would go off and something that was not understandable became clearer. This happened several times with the assistance of fellow classmates in a study group. In the Gospel passage from Luke this week, Jesus opens the minds of His disciples. It is interesting to note that despite what Jesus disciples experienced, He continued to open their minds to understand the Scriptures. We can only imagine what Scripture passages Jesus used. They were more than likely the passages we heard at the Easter Vigil, the stories in the Old Testament, including Genesis and Exodus. Jesus did this to make it clearer for His disciples to understand His Father s plan. Whatever Jesus wants to make clearer for His disciples, He likewise wants to do for all of us in 2018 in River Edge. Perhaps, by attending daily Mass or breaking open the Sunday readings, which we do here at St. Peter s at the Tuesday Evenings of Peace and Friendship, our various Small Christian Communities, and ministry meetings. Jesus Himself is offering us opportunities to see His Father s plan more clearly. As we continue these joyous 50 days of the Easter season, may we constantly be reminded of the words of Jesus, Peace be with you, when we extend and offer our hands to those standing next to us at Mass during the Sign of Peace before Communion and at the Dismissal when the priest or deacon says to Go in peace in order for us to carry out the Father s plan in our daily lives. Happy Easter! Deacon Paul Kazanecki BAPTISMS We welcome into our parish family Gemma Sofia Cali Reagan Grace Donde Shaun Lawrence Finn Jaden Michael Lauriello Ava Patricia Riccardi Allison Marie Waldron who were brought to the Lord through the Sacrament of Baptism. JustSteps: Catholic Social Teaching The Trauma of Family Separation at the Border On March 2nd an Op-Ed piece, written by Dora Galacatos, executive director of the Feerick Center for Social Justice at Fordham Law, Alan Shapiro and Brett Stark, founders and directors of Terra Firma, which aids unaccompanied minor children, appeared in the New York Times, detailing the toxic stress and trauma experienced by the separation of parents from their children, and siblings from one another as they seek seek refuge at the border from the violence and drug cartels of their homelands. In their advocacy for the reform of our broken immigration system, the United States bishops have consistently kept the need for families to be kept together. The article s authors, who have worked with the children separated from their parents, second this, calling what is happening immoral, medically/mentally harmful and unjustifiable legally, as family unity is central to our immigration laws and our longstanding policy of reuniting citizens and permanent residents with their relatives. Both the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Medical Association have denounced family separation as harsh and counterproductive In the detention center in McAllen, Texas, detainees are housed in a warehouse, a cavernous, cold space holding hundreds upon hundreds of mostly women and children. Chain-link fencing divides the space into pens, one for boys, one for girls, and a third for their mothers and infant siblings. This is where family separation begins, as does the nightmare for parents and children. Parents whose children have been taken from them are given two options: either agree to return home with their children, or endure having these children sent on to shelters run by the Health and Human Services Department while they themselves languish in detention centers scattered throughout the country. They are not guaranteed placement in McAllen. Nor is it guaranteed that family members can continue to keep track of one another. The authors write that family separation is anathema to basic decency and human rights. For our government to essentially hold immigrant children as hostages in exchange for the ransom of their parents deportation is simply despicable. They also indicate that the Department of Homeland Security may soon formalize this abhorrent practice. Citizens are urged to contact their senators and representatives urging them to fight against such a reprehensible possibility in which children would essentially be bargaining chips Around River Edge River Edge Girl Scouts Multi-Troop Cookie Booth Saturday/Sunday, April 21/22 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM River Edge Fire Dept, Company 1 Kinderkamack Road, River Edge Cash & Carry!
