The Pearl of Great Price or the Bait of Satan? In this Sunday s Gospel, Jesus tells his disciples, The kingdom of heaven is like a merchant searching for ine pearls. When he inds a pearl of great price, he goes and sells all that he has and buys it. (Matthew 13:45-46) A pearl is one of the most beautiful things there is. It is a itting symbol of the most beautiful reality of all, the kingdom of heaven, which is being in the presence of God. The kingdom of heaven became present on earth in Jesus Christ. To be a citizen of the kingdom of heaven is to be a disciple of Jesus Christ. And as Jesus told the crowds, and continues saying to us today, Whoever of you does not renounce all that he has cannot be my disciple. (Luke 14:33) There are different ways to renounce all that we have. We can renounce all that we have spiritually by letting go of seeking anything in our spiritual lives other than total surrender to God. This can mean renouncing the search for spiritual consolations, answers from God, distraction-free prayer, and certainty in discernment. We can renounce all that we have emotionally by letting go of expecting other people to give us what we want or need. This can mean renouncing making demands on others, or manipulating them, or expecting anything from them. We can renounce all that we have physically by being willing to give up any possessions that God may want us to. This can mean honestly seeking God s will for our lifestyle and purchases, in prayer looking at the needs not only of ourselves and our families but of our relatives, friends, parishioners, community members, and people around the world. And then to not only be willing to give stuff up, but to actually do so. We can renounce all that we have intellectually by letting go of the illusion that we are the smartest person on earth. I bet very few people consciously put it that way, but that s our implicit belief if we refuse to take other people s advice or the wisdom of generations past. Part of that wisdom is realizing that God knows a lot more than we do, and that He has revealed a lot of that more through the Catholic Church. It is through the Church that God s Self-Revelation, and the teachings of Jesus Christ and the apostles, have come down to us. It is also through the Church that the Holy Spirit continues to guide us through the de initive teachings of the Pope and the Bishops united with him. We can also renounce all that we have temporally by accepting God s agenda for each day in place of our own. This can mean asking God what he wants us to do with our spare time, vacations, Sundays and days off instead of just doing what we feel drawn to, and then making plans accordingly. It can also mean accepting interruptions, changes in our plans and surprises as part of God s providence, instead of as unwelcome intrusions. While God offers us the pearl of great price in Jesus Christ, the devil offers us a counterfeit pearl. It looks nice and shiny on the outside, but inside it is full of ugliness and poison. It is bait meant to attract us, get us hooked, and then bring us to hell if we won t let go of it. One of the main ingredients in this bait of the devil is sins against the Sixth Commandment. The enemy of our souls is most successful in getting people to take this bait when they don t even think sins are sins. But you don t have to know that something is dangerous for it to hurt you. If you drink a glass of poison, it will do you in whether you know what you are drinking or not. It s the same with sexual sins that are not repented of. As the ancient saying goes, sin weakens the will and darkens the intellect. We probably all know people who were brought up by devout Catholic parents, and were accurately taught right from wrong, but then they got addicted to one or more sins. There s a common path for addictions, whether it s alcohol, drugs, looking at pornography, sexual activity outside of marriage, gambling, shopping or something else. First there s discovery. Then curiosity. Then considering whether to indulge or not. Then temptation. Then giving in once. Then the experience of pleasure. Then the feeling of inner con lict. Then rationalization about why it s not so bad. Then giving into temptation again. Then the building up of a strong habit or compulsion. Then convincing oneself that there s nothing wrong with it. Then rejecting any voices that tell you there s something wrong with the habit, like parents, friends, or the Church. Then, inally, a severing of relationships with people who won t support you in your addiction...including God. As Christians, God calls us to help all people recognize the difference between the pearl of great price, the kingdom of heaven, and the counterfeit pearl, the bait of the devil. To do that, we need to be able to see that difference ourselves, and then, as Jesus says, to sell all that we have and buy that true pearl. And if we ve already taken the bait? There s no cause for despair. With God s help, we can always spit it out. As Saint Paul writes, No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your strength, but with the temptation will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it. (1 Corinthians 10:13) May the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of Hope, help us to seek the pearl of great price as earnestly and fruitfully as she did. Your fellow seeker, Father Rudolph

Early in life he joined the Hermits of St. Augustine (also known as the Austin Friars) in the town of Rieti. He was always helpful to others, especially the sick and strangers, and enjoyed waiting on guests at the monastery. He spent many hours in contemplation and was also a dedicated altar server in the friary church. He wept for his own faults and also those of others. When walking in the monastery garden John used to say, You just have to weep. All around us we see trees and grass and lowers and plants germinating, growing, producing their fruit, and dying back into the earth again as their Maker s law demands, but human beings, to whom God has given a reasoning mind and the promise of a transcendent reward, are always doing the exact opposite of what he wants. After John s death miracles were reported at his tomb. Blessed John of Rieti, pray for us! (Excerpted and adapted with permission of the Publisher from Butler s Lives of the Saints, New Full Edition Paul Burns 2003, Published by Liturgical Press, Collegeville, MN) You are invited to come to the Eucharistic Adoration Chapel and make a visit of whatever time you feel you are able. If you prayerfully find that you are being called to make a commitment to one hour of prayer a week, there is an urgent need for an Adorer on Tuesdays from midnight to 1:00 a.m., Tuesdays 11:00 a.m. to noon, Wednesdays from 11:00 p.m. to midnight, and Sundays from 4:00-5:00 p.m. All questions and commitments of time may be directed to Therese or Betty at the numbers above. The time you spend with Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament is the best time you will spend on earth. ~ Saint Teresa of Calcutta Youth Ministry Youth Minister & Confirmation Coordinator: Anna Scherber ascherber@straphaelcrystal.org or 763.537.8401 x210 www.straphaelyouth.org Junior & Senior High Aug. 8: Extreme Faith Camp Reunion from 5:00-9:00 pm at Sacred Heart in Robbinsdale, MN.
