God Establishes His Covenant Topic: The Bible 9 6 Lesson Lesson Bible Fact-Pak Questions 12 17, 20, 249, 250, 271, 495 497 THE NEW TESTAMENT Scripture references: Revelation 4:1 The books of the New Testament are divided into three sections: History, Epistles, and Prophecy. Many of these books were written by Jesus disciples and others who followed Him while He was on earth. They were with Jesus and heard His teachings from His own mouth. They wrote about the things they heard and saw so others could learn who Jesus is and believe in Him for salvation. 1. New Testament History The first five books of the New Testament are books of history. The four Gospels Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John tell the good news of Jesus life, teachings, death, and resurrection. The Book of Acts, written by Luke, tells the history of the Church. It tells how the Church was started and what happened during the first seventy years after Jesus resurrection. All four Gospels tell the story of Jesus, but with some differences. Matthew wrote the story for the Jews, so he showed how Jesus fulfilled the Jewish prophecies. Mark wrote for people who were not Jews and not familiar with Jewish history. Luke, a doctor, wrote about God s work in sending Jesus as the Messiah-servant. John s book was written to help us understand that Jesus truly is the Son of God. BFP: 12 14,16, 249, 250, 495 2. The Epistles The word epistle means letter. The Epistles of the Bible are letters sent by the apostles. The purpose of the Epistles was to teach and explain the doctrines taught by Jesus. Thirteen of the twenty-one Epistles were written by Paul, who became a believer after Jesus resurrection. Paul was a Jew and a teacher of Jews. After becoming a believer, he dedicated his life to taking the message of salvation to non-jews (Gentiles). In the years following Jesus death and resurrection, the Church was new. People did not understand many things about being believers. Paul and other apostles wrote the Epistles to help new believers understand salvation and to help them know how to please God. BFP: 15, 20, 496, 497 3. Prophecy The final book of the New Testament, Revelation, is a book of prophecy. The word revelation means to reveal something, to make something known. Since the Book of Revelation is almost entirely made up of a prophecy of the future, it is making the future known. The apostle John wrote the Book of Revelation when he was sent to the island of Patmos as punishment for his faith. There God showed him what would happen in the last days. John wrote down his visions and sent the book to believers to encourage them during persecution. BFP: 17, 271
