TWENTY SEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME, OCTOBER 6, 2013 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK The Vatican just announced that Pope John XXIII and Pope John Paul II will be declared saints next April 27. The ceremony, originally planned for December 8, was rescheduled after the Polish Bishops worried that icy road conditions might endanger their people who would be making the journey to Rome for the canonization. October is the month of the rosary, and John Paul II was its greatest modern proponent, adding to it the Luminous Mysteries, reflections on Jesus s public ministry before his Passion and Death. John Paul s beautiful 2002 Apostolic Letter The Rosary of the Virgin Mary introduced the Luminous Mysteries: Christ s baptism in the Jordan Christ s self-revelation at the marriage of Cana Christ s announcement of the kingdom of God with the invitation to conversion Christ s Transfiguration when he revealed his glory to his Apostles Christ s institution of the Eucharist at the Last Supper as sacramental expression of the Paschal Mystery. To recite the Rosary, the Pope wrote, is nothing other than to contemplate with Mary the face of Christ. The principal events in the life and work of Jesus are placed before us so that we can consider their meaning and receive their saving effects. When we pray the Rosary, those mysteries will release all their saving power. To say the peaceful prayers the beads designate, while we think of what Jesus did for us, makes the Rosary more than a memory device to recall long past occurrences. As John Paul expressed it: What God accomplished centuries ago did not only affect the direct witnesses of those events; it continues to affect people in every age with its gift of grace. By immersing us in the mysteries of the Redeemer s life, [the Rosary] ensures that what he has done and what the liturgy makes present is profoundly assimilated and shapes our existence. Our parishioners pray the Rosary before the tabernacle in Mary s Chapel after every daily Mass and before each Sunday Mass. And beneath the Chapel s image of Our Lady of Guadaloupe, the Knights of Columbus have a device to hold Rosaries anyone is welcome to take. If you pray the Rosary, you will find out for yourself the validity of something Romano Guardini once wrote, that it may become for us a quiet hidden land in which we may dwell and find peace, or a chapel whose doors are ever open and into which we can take the burden of our souls. Msgr. David Hubba 3 THE LEGION OF MARY INVITES YOU TO......THIRD SATURDAY PRAYER OCTOBER 12 All are invited to join the Legion of Mary after the Mass on Saturday, October 12, in Mary's Chapel for the Rosary and the continuing series on the virtues of the Blessed Mother....AND SUNDAY ROSARY AFTER MASS The Legion of Mary continues to pray the Rosary on Sundays in the Blessed Sacrament Room of Mary s Chapel at each of these hours: Saturday at 4:30 pm, Sunday at 8:00 am, 10:00 am, and 12:00 noon. All are invited to attend. MOMS IN PRAYER Moms in Prayer is a weekly Rosary said for the purpose of all the school children. We meet every Tuesday at 9:15 am in Mary s Chapel in the lower church. SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ Compiled by the Liturgy of the Word With Children Committee The Gospel is the Good News about Jesus. The Gospel Reading for today is from Saint Luke 17: 5-10 In today s Gospel, Jesus s friends ask, Lord, increase our faith. Jesus replies by telling them a story about a mustard seed. A mustard seed is about the size of a freckle. When you plant the seed, it produces a great big tree. Jesus tells us that God wants us to have faith in him and trust in him completely. If we have faith in God, God will always help us. Jesus tells us that faith, even in small amounts can move the human heart. It is faith in God that moves people to shelter the homeless, feed the hungry, and help a fellow student who is not doing well in school. It is faith in God that helps us to live as servants of God. It is faith in God that gets us through problems at school and at home. MISSION OF THE WEEK Say this little prayer: Lord, help me to have faith in you so that when I am having a problem at school or at home, I know you will help me to choose the right thing to do. Amen. 6 Jesus wants us to have faith in God.
