Liturgy This Week s Readings ~ June 17, 2012 11th Sunday in Ordinary Time First Reading: Ezekiel 17:22-24 Second Reading: 2 Corinthians 5:6-10 Gospel: Mark 4:26-34 Jesus often teaches in parables, sayings or stories that compare God s ways to ordinary life. The images get our attention, and the puzzling conclusions keep us thinking about their meaning. If we are open to God, we come to understand. Today s parable speaks about the seed growing on its own. It has the power. The planter does not know how or notice the growth beneath the soil. He can be anxious or fret, but it is not his power that makes the seed grow. The parable of the mustard seed speaks about the very small beginnings of God s kingdom. God s Kingdom grows from those who heed his words. Most people do not understand about God s kingdom. But the Lord keeps taking the disciples aside and explaining to them. Those who are willing to follow the Lord and listen to his teachings will come to understand the truth of the Kingdom. Tell a contemporary parable of the reign of God that speaks to people in today s world. In your personal life or your small church community, what small thing has become a big or important thing? What have you done in love and service to help the reign of God? Catholic Cemeteries We remember and give thanks at our regular Eucharistic celebrations for all of those who have died. All are invited. Unless otherwise noted all Masses are on Saturday mornings at 10:30 a.m. Holyrood ~ 205 NE 205th St. Shoreline, WA 98155 Calvary ~ 5041-35th Ave. NE Seattle, WA 98105 We invite all families and friends of the deceased to join us in the monthly celebration of the Eucharist at Holyrood and Calvary Cemeteries Father Ron Funke, SJ is the celebrant except as noted. Mass begins at 10:30am. A reception follows Mass. Holyrood Cemetery July 7 Calvary Cemetery July 14 For more information please call 253-838-2240 (Seattle) or 253-297-3350 (Tacoma) June 24, 2012 ~ the Nativity of St. John the Baptist First Reading: Isaiah 49:1-6 Psalm 139 Second Reading: Acts 13:22-26 Gospel: Luke 1:57-66, 80 In today s first reading, John the Baptist, like Isaiah, was called by God from before his birth. Isaiah s words seem to describe John s mission of proclaiming the coming of God s salvation in Jesus to Israel and to the ends of the earth. Through baptism, God has called us to prepare the way for Jesus in our world. Though John the Baptist s father, Zechariah, doubted, God s promise was fulfilled in John s birth. The name John means God has been gracious. In the Jesus whom John proclaimed, God s plan will be graciously fulfilled for us also: the salvation of our souls. Do you have a family member or neighbor in or from our parish who would like to stay in touch with the St John Community? We would like to expand our Ministry to the homebound. In addition to taking Communion to these people we would like to reach out with a phone call or greeting card to say hello and that we are thinking about them. We will also need volunteers. Please contact Loretta Fletcher at 784-3529 or Marion Johnson at 782-5084 if you would be interested, or if you know of someone who might enjoy this type of outreach. Gluten Free hosts are available. If you need a gluten free host please come back to the Sacristy before Mass and let the Sacristan know. If you have borrowed a pyx to take communion to a loved one, please remember to bring it back when it is not needed anymore. Also, if you have served as Eucharistic Minister or Lector and forgotten to take your cross off, please bring it back. We are running low. Thanks!

When he left his native island of Cyprus, he may have had no idea what life held for him. Soon he became a Christian, perhaps on the day of Pentecost. He was welcomed into the Christian community and changed his name to Barnabas, which means son of encouragement. Barnabas sold his property and gave the money to the community in Jerusalem. Gradually other Christians came to see that Barnabas was a man of deep faith, filled with the Holy Spirit. It was Barnabas who introduced Paul to the apostles and encouraged everyone to accept him. Barnabas trusted Paul and took the risk of defending him. For a time, Barnabas and Paul were leaders in the Church at Antioch. When they returned to Jerusalem the Holy Spirit had plans for them. The Church leaders sent Barnabas and Paul out to do missionary work. This work took them to Cyprus and then on to Lystra in Asia Minor. In every place where they established a Christian community, Paul and Barnabas appointed leaders to guide the local church. Eventually the two of them separated. Barnabas took the disciple John Mark to Cyprus, while Paul set out on another missionary journey. Christian tradition says that Barnabas was martyred, and a handwritten copy of Matthew s Gospel was found clasped to his heart. Why is Barnabas called an apostle? He was not one of the first twelve chosen by Jesus, but he played an important part in the early Christian Church. Virtue: The courage of a martyr. You can still go online through PayPal, or Vanco.
