Director of Student Ministries Los Angeles, California Prepared by Sean Meade March, 2018

THE POSITION TITLE: Director of Student Ministries ORGANIZATION: Bel Air Church (BAC) LOCATION: Los Angeles, CA WEBSITE: www.belairpres.org ORGANIZATION Where we came from Since its founding in 1956, Bel Air Presbyterian Church has become one of the largest churches in Los Angeles. The church is on the "Educational Corridor" on Mulholland Drive, on a hill overlooking the San Fernando Valley. In October 1959, construction began on the historic Evans Chapel and Christian education building. Bel Air Presbyterian Church continued to meet in Evans Chapel until the church moved into its present 1600-seat Sanctuary in September, 1991. In 2007, the church completed a $12 million campus expansion program, The Campaign for Bel Air: Phase I, which included the two story Education Building, Discipleship Center, and Administration Building, with staff offices featuring stunning views overlooking the San Fernando Valley. The campus also features Parable, a full-service coffee lab that is open to the community. Bel Air has a rich history with the Reagan family. Rev. Dr. Moomaw gave the invocation at President Ronald Reagan's first inauguration in 1981. Rev. Dr. Wenning gave the invocation at President Reagan's state funeral. Rev. Dr. Moomaw presided over a private service for the family of First Lady Nancy Reagan before her state funeral at the Reagan Library. Rev. Dr. Drew Sams was officially elected as the church's Senior Pastor and Head of Staff on April 13, 2014. In the Fall of 2015, church leadership voted to start using the shortened name of Bel Air Church, and in April of 2016, Bel Air Church celebrated it s 60th anniversary.

Where we are going Follow Jesus Every Day and Everywhere with Everyone. Bel Air Church is in a season of change as we continue to restructure our weekly services to better position ourselves to accomplish our mission and vision. In June of 2017, we made a move to new service times and a new Sunday format. We re made this move because we feel that God is leading us into a new season where we can be even more intentional about calling people into community and discipleship. What we value We are working together to further embody and grow in each of our following values. Hospitality Hospitality is demonstrating love toward people who are different than you. As we embody a life of hospitality, people feel at home among us. Courage Courage is living as a follower of Jesus regardless of how vulnerable that makes you. As we embody a life of courage, through our brokenness others will see the power of God at work in our lives. Health Health is choosing to thrive in every area of your life. As we embody a life of health, our emotional, relational, financial, physical, and spiritual well-being will be transformed regardless of our circumstances. Community Community is desiring so much more than just being in proximity with others. As we embody a life of community, our identity in Christ unifies us as we follow Jesus alongside one another. Impact Impact is multiplying what God is doing in and through you. As we embody a life of impact, we will be inviting, empowering, and releasing others to follow Jesus as well. For more information about Bel Air Church, please visit www.belairpres.org

BEL AIR STUDENT MINISTRIES Bel Air Student Ministry exists to help students follow Jesus every day and everywhere with everyone. We are building a student ministry that will be dynamic and unique. Bel Air s Student Ministry distinctives include: A strong alignment and integration with the life of the entire congregation. Student Ministry is not a silo. Student Ministry is a student-contextualized expression of the mission, vision, values and culture of Bel Air Church. Students are invited and encouraged to be part of one church through service, relationship, and membership. A value of high impact retreats and camps that are spiritually catalytic for our students. An intentional strategy to move students out on mission, both locally and globally. We seek to build a high level of participation, ownership, and impact by students. A cohesive approach to middle school and high school, with a commitment to be one team, building a systematic disciple-making journey through the teen years. A growing commitment to family ministry. One of our main goals is partnering with parents to disciple their children and students. The Student Ministries at Bel Air are committed to growing an intergenerational team of caring volunteer leaders. We see volunteer leaders as the core of what God is doing in our student ministries. Currently the Student Ministry meets from 10-10:45 AM for small groups on Sunday morning, and then from 11AM - 12:20PM for the student service. Students also meet from 6:30-8PM on Tuesday nights. Sunday morning small groups are currently separated by grade and gender, and are led by a team of two adult volunteer leaders. At the Sunday morning service students spend time in worship and fellowship together, and then split into JHM/HSM groups to hear a message from God s Word. Tuesday night gatherings are a similar format, but with a smaller group. Bel Air Student Ministries has a rich history of attending spiritually impactful camps throughout the year. Currently, our student ministries attend three camps/retreats each year. In Summer our students go to Catalina Island, just off the coast of Southern

California, for an incredible summer camp experience. Summer Camp is the epitome of what Bel Air Student Ministry is all about. This is a time when our students will grow together in their faith and will be challenged to take their next step in their relationship with God. Students will have the opportunity to experience God while snorkeling with aquatic wildlife, hiking past wild bison and watching the sun rise over the Pacific Ocean. Our students also currently participate in a combined HSM/JHM Fall Retreat and in separate HSM/JHM Winter Camps. In the Fall, our junior high will attend our annual Fall Retreat in the mountains just outside of Los Angeles, and they will retreat again in the late winter for our annual Winter Camp. BAC offers real life opportunities for student growth through short-term mission trips and serving opportunities, both local and abroad. Bel Air Student Ministries teaches students that they are the church wherever God has placed them. The Director of Student Ministries will be tasked with the growth and development of a committed team of volunteer leaders. We believe that volunteer leaders are the backbone of a successful student ministry. Volunteer leaders should teach, coach and build up each other and the students. They should be the friendly faces that greet students at check-in, engage students in activities, run technical equipment, lead in worship, teach lessons and keep the students safe. COMMUNITY Bel Air is part of the greater Los Angeles area, located 19 miles from Downtown Los Angeles and 15 miles from Hollywood. Los Angeles is the cultural, financial, and commercial center of Southern California. With nearly 4 million residents, it is the secondmost populous city in the United States (after New York City). Located in a large coastal basin surrounded on three sides by mountains reaching up to and over 10,000 feet, Los Angeles covers an area of about 469 square miles. Nicknamed the "City of Angels", Los Angeles is known for its mediterranean climate, ethnic diversity, and sprawling metropolis. The city is also famous as the home of Hollywood, the world leader in the creation of motion picture, recorded music, and television productions. Los Angeles also has a diverse economy in culture, media, fashion, science, sports, technology, education, medicine, and research. A global city, it has been ranked 6th in the Global Cities Index and 9th in the Global Economic Power Index. The city hosted the Summer Olympic Games in 1932 and 1984 and is bidding to host the 2024 Summer Olympics and thus become the second city to have hosted the Games three times. The Los Angeles area also hosted the 1994 FIFA men's soccer World Cup final

match as well as the 1999 FIFA women's soccer World Cup final match; both games were held at the Rose Bowl in the nearby city of Pasadena. The city of Los Angeles and its metropolitan area are the home of ten top level professional sports teams. These teams include the Los Angeles Dodgers and Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim of Major League Baseball (MLB), the Los Angeles Rams and Los Angeles Chargers of the National Football League (NFL), the Los Angeles Lakers and Los Angeles Clippers of the National Basketball Association (NBA), the Los Angeles Kings and Anaheim Ducks of the National Hockey League (NHL), the Los Angeles Galaxy of Major League Soccer (MLS), and the Los Angeles Sparks of the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA). The performing arts play a major role in Los Angeles' cultural identity. According to the USC Stevens Institute for Innovation, "there are more than 1,100 annual theatrical productions and 21 openings every week. There are 841 museums and art galleries in Los Angeles County, with new ones opening every year.
