Pastor Paul has led this series encouraging the critical value of forming community out of our diversity. Those who participated in the series last year are welcome to participate again as a way of strengthening the habits that we wish to form. If you have friends who might be interested in the Habits of the Heart, please encourage them to participate. While we will gather as a whole, we will divide into smaller groups for the essential sharing. Though attendance at all five sessions is not essential, it is encouraged. Contact Pastor Paul with queries: pkottke@universityparkumc.org. The five sessions have been: Affirming that we are all in this together Deep listening to the Other listening the other into speech Holding tension in community in life giving ways Articulating one s own passions & deeply felt convictions Trusting that God will move us forward into wholeness and abundance I truly believe that this is a process which is ideal for our time. I believe that people are fundamentally tired of the caustic tribalism which currently dominates much of our media, our politics, and our culture. This is a simple process, but one which requires practice. In essence, we will be learning the ways in which we can hold the tension of our day in ways that bless us rather than divides us. Issues are important but deeper than the issues is our common desire to live into the abundance that God desires for all God s children. ~ Pastor Paul CELEBRATING 91 YEARS OF MINISTRY! An important stream of ministry that joined with University Park UMC two years ago has been the ministry of Evanston a ministry on the corner of Lafayette and Evans Avenue that has existed for 91 years! On March 30, 1924, 100 members plus 200 Sunday School students participated in the dedication of this community of faith. Evanston represents the mergers of three denominations Evangelical, Evangelical United Brethren and Methodist creating Evanston United Methodist in 1968. And then on June 30, 2013, this congregation completed its transformation to the care and ministry of University Park UMC, allowing for an exciting ministry of The for Spiritual Wholeness and Healing. We celebrate the 91 years of powerful and faithful ministry called Evanston. WAYNE AND DOROTHEA LITTRELL TO CELEBRATE THEIR 75 TH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY! END GUN VIOLENCE EVENT FEATURES PROMINENT RABBIS AS GUEST SPEAKER Is there such a thing as a smart gun? JOE, the Jewish Outreach Effort, and Temple Emanuel will hold a special program featuring Rabbi Joel Mosbacher, a national leader in the effort to make smart gun technology available to the public. Mosbacher is national co chair of the Do Not Stand Idly By (DNSIB) Campaign, which works to reduce gun violence by pressing firearm manufacturers to introduce safer weapons. The DNSIB campaign has been endorsed by the U.S. Conference of Mayors and over 70 municipalities. JOE is made up of members of local Jewish congregations allied with Colorado Faith Communities United to End Gun Violence. The event is free and open to the public. Tuesday, March 31, at 7:00 pm 8:30, followed by a reception at Temple Emanuel, 51 Grape Street, Denver. The fire arm industry continues to press the belief that the more guns in distribution the safer our streets/homes will be. The United States has the highest firearm ownership rate of any country, and yet has a firearms homicide rate 20 times the average of 22 peer countries. On February 19 th, the Colorado Senate by straight party line voted to allow anyone to carry a concealed weapon without a permit. On February 23 the Colorado Senate will have in committee the ban on high capacity ammunition magazines. Does this truly make us safer? ~ Pastor Paul DenUM (Denver Urban Ministries) will have their Hope 2015 Benefit on Tuesday, March 24, 6 8pm at the studios at Overland Crossing. If you are interested in attending this fundraiser to support DenUM, please RSVP via Carolyn Schultz of DenUm, 303 350 5066, carolyne@denum.org. Or visit DenUm s website and clicking on The Hope Benefit: www.denum.org.
