Advent Devotional For the Advent Season, the Spiritual Life Committee has ordered devotional material designed to help each of us to experience the season more fully. Look for the booklets, Unto Us a Child is Born, at tables near both the chapel and sanctuary. Pick one up & use it privately and/or with family and friends. The daily meditations and prayers focus on the writings of Henri Nouwen, one of the most widely read spiritual authors of all time. Through these reflections, we will deepen our understanding and appreciation of God s grace and love through Jesus Christ and we will be moved to follow Christ as we live in love and service toward others. "While we continue to pray for the families and friends of those who have perished, we must also support our prayers with action." Faiths United to Prevent Gun Violence December 14 marks the 3 rd anniversary of the murders by firearm of 20 first graders and 6 adult staff members at Sandy Hook Elementary School. The National Gun Violence Prevention Sabbath, December 10 14, commemorates that event. During last year s Sabbath, over 200 people, under the banner of Colorado Faith Communities United to End Gun Violence (CFCU) held a vigil at the state capitol, urging legislators to take action to reduce the toll of gun violence in Colorado. The result? All the sensible gun laws passed in 2013 remain on the books, and bills designed to allow for more guns, or to make them more lethal, were defeated. This year we are asking individual congregations to commemorate, in their own ways, those whose lives have been touched by gun violence. In addition, there will be a candlelight vigil at Colorado Boulevard and Hampden on 12/13 at 6:30 p.m.to call attention to this issue. Sandy Hook was, perhaps the most heart wrenching mass shooting in the U.S. Yet, since 2008 there has been a mass shooting, i.e. 4 or more victims, every week. For more information on Colorado Faith Communities United to End Gun Violence, please visit: cfcu-co.org.

Blue Christmas Service of Comfort and Hope Sunday, December 20, 5:00pm The Chapel 2122 S. Lafayette St. ~ Denver For many people, the season of Christmas is more a time of struggle or heartache than a time of celebration. Joyous musical refrains fill our malls, churches, radios, and televisions, focusing on the happiness of the season. But Christmas often reminds people of what they have lost or never had. The anguish of broken relationships, the insecurity of unemployment, the weariness of ill health, the pain of isolation, the loss of a family member, the loss of a beloved family pet all these can contribute to feeling blue, depressed, or discouraged at a time when it seems as if everyone in the world around us is celebrating. It is important to take the time and space to acknowledge one s feelings and to connect with the light of Christ. For those who are living with the loss of a loved one, depression, broken relationships, loneliness or just the need to step away from the chaos of the season. Through music, scripture, prayer and candlelight, we acknowledge the pain and look toward the hope to come. Come as you are. All are welcome! Comments from past Blue Christmas Attendees: I was so fortunate to have found out about the service as I know many people who struggle with the "holiday season. This was indeed an experience that I will recommend to others. During the holiday season, the tough things that have happened in my life often come to the forefront. I came to this peaceful, thoughtful worship setting and found prayer and gratitude amidst the loud voices and hectic consumer noise of December. It was wonderful! I was going through a rough time, and I found a real sense of community there I did. Mitten, Hat, Scarf Tree!! Brrr we are hearing projections of a cold winter, so the Knitters (or Knot) need your help to keep the needy warm and meet our goal of 300 items to give away. The hat and mitten tree is already up in the Narthex. The scarves and hats made by our UPark knitters are a good start to meeting our goal. We need everyone s generosity to be a part of this effort. Please bring hats, scarves, and mittens and place them on the tree. I would like to order boxes of Christmas $15/box. Make checks payable to UMW. You may pay when you pick up.

7 Advent Great Thanksgiving Leader: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. Leader: Lift up your hearts. People: We lift them up to the Lord. Leader: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People: It is right to give our thanks and praise. It is right to give you thanks and praise, Great God of the Coming Dawn for in each new day You surprise the earth with splendor. Your Spirit moves across the face of the waters and brings forth life. Made from the earth, made by your hand, we forgot who we were. We rejected your love and fell into sin and death. Yet even in our darkness you continued to speak light and life. The Faith We Sing #2257 a When we were slaves in a foreign land, you brought us out of our oppression, led us through the waters, to a new life as a holy people. And so with all creation, we raise our voices to proclaim: Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord, God of power and might Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord. Blessed are you, and blessed is your Son Jesus Christ whose coming was announced by wilderness prophets and whose birth was in a stable to the song of angels. In Jesus you took our flesh. He was the One promised. He announced the new day and the acceptable year when blind folks would see and poor folks would rejoice, When captives would be set free, and the oppressed would once more walk in liberty. #2257 b He told stories of waiting bridesmaids and prodigal sons. With tears and compassion he brought a dead man to life and gave a woman at a well the living water she sought. He overturned tables and challenged the powerful. On the cross he revealed the power of love and in the emptiness of the tomb he gave us a glimpse of your tomorrow that does not end in death. On the night when he was betrayed he sat at table with his friends. He took bread, blessed it, broke it, gave it to them, and said, "Take this. Eat it. It is my body, given for you. Do this to remember me." In the same way he took the cup, blessed it, gave it to them, and said, "Drink from this every one of you. This is my blood poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sin. Do this to remember me." And so we remember. We remember and we offer praise and thanks to you, O God. As we offer ourselves to be a holy and living sacrifice in union with Christ's offering for us. As we proclaim the mystery of faith: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. Pour out your Holy Spirit on us gathered here and on these gifts of bread and cup. Let them be for us once more Christ's body and let us be for you once more Christ's body redeemed in love. Make us one with Christ, one with each other, and one in ministry to all the world, until Christ comes and we feast at the table he prepared through his love. Amen. Amen. Amen #2257 c # 2257 d
